The fibrosis and scar formation that characterize adult wound healing are also the cause of clinical problems; scar contracture, hypertrophic scar, and pulmonary and hepatic fibrosis are only a few examples. Studies of fetal wound healing can provide an insight into the initiation and regulation of a scarless repair process akin to regeneration. Studies of fetal repair have already suggested mechanisms that might favorably alter adult healing. Topical application of hyaluronic acid to wounds in adult diabetic rats leads to enhanced epithelial migration. It has been recognized that the addition of TGF-beta to fetal wounds causes an adultlike healing response with fibrosis and inflammation. A subsequent study using neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta in adult wounds showed enhanced healing with a more normal dermal architecture with fewer macrophages, fewer blood vessels, and less collagen. As our understanding of regenerative tissue repair increases, the opportunities to modulate adult fibrotic conditions should expand. 相似文献

Carbon-monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) from Rhodospirillum rubrum contains two metal centers: a Ni-X-[Fe4S4]2+/1+ cluster (C-center) that serves as the COoxidation site and a standard [Fe4S4]2+/1+ cluster (B-center) that mediates electron flow from the C-center to external electron acceptors. Four states of the C-center were previously identified in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and M?ssbauer studies. In this report, EPR-redox titrations demonstrate that the fully oxidized, diamagnetic form of the C-center (Cox) undergoes a one-electron reduction to the Cred1 state (gav = 1.87) with a midpoint potential of -110 mV. The reduction of Cox to Cred1 is shown to coincide with the reduction of an [Fe4S4]2+/1+ cluster in redox-titration experiments monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy. Nickel-deficient CODH, which is devoid of nickel yet contains both [Fe4S4]2+/1+ clusters, does not exhibit EPR-active states or reduced Fe4S4 clusters at potentials more positive than -350 mV. 相似文献

Renal length has been measured by ultrasound in 237 subjects with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease, 147 with sickle cell-hemoglobin C (SC) disease, and in 78 age-matched controls with a normal hemoglobin (AA) genotype. As expected, renal length increased with age in all genotypes but mean length was significantly greater in SS disease compared with SC disease (mean difference 4.3 mm after adjustment for height) and significantly greater in both genotypes than in AA controls (SS/AA difference 9.2 mm, SC/AA difference 5.0 mm after adjustment for height). Examination of relationships between renal length and some hematological indices (hemoglobin, fetal hemoglobin, reticulocyte counts, alpha thalassemia status) in SS or SC disease showed only a significant negative correlation with hemoglobin and positive correlation with reticulocyte count in SS disease. Further analysis suggested that the stronger relationship was between renal length and high reticulocyte count. The mechanism of renal enlargement is unknown although glomerular hypertrophy and increased renal blood volume are likely contributors. 相似文献
