An 11 km-long polarisation-maintaining optical fibre with crosstalk up to ?25.2 dB and ?22.5 dB at 1.30 ?m and 1.56 ?m, respectively, is presented. Transmission loss is 1.2 dB/km at 1.3 ?m and has a minimum value of 0.79 dB/km at 1.56 ?m.  相似文献

Low-loss and low-crosstalk polarization-maintaining optical fibers (called PANDA fibers), which are potentially useful for coherent optical communication systems, have been fabricated based on the optimum design. Transmission loss of 0.22 dB/km, comparable to that of commercially available single-mode fibers, and crosstalk of -27 dB in a 5-km length, corresponding to the polarization-mode-coupling coefficient of4.0 times 10^{-7}m-1, have been demonstrated in the 1.56-μm wavelength.  相似文献

Periprosthetic osteolysis-bone loss in the vicinity of a prosthesis-is the most serious problem limiting the longevity of artificial joints. It is caused by bone-resorptive responses to wear particles originating from the articulating surface. This study investigated the effects of graft polymerization of our original biocompatible phospholipid polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) onto the polyethylene surface. Mechanical studies using a hip-joint simulator revealed that the MPC grafting markedly decreased the friction and the amount of wear. Osteoclastic bone resorption induced by subperiosteal injection of particles onto mouse calvariae was abolished by the MPC grafting on particles. MPC-grafted particles were shown to be biologically inert by culture systems with respect to phagocytosis and resorptive cytokine secretion by macrophages, subsequent expression of receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand in osteoblasts, and osteoclastogenesis from bone marrow cells. From the mechanical and biological advantages, we believe that our approach will make a major improvement in artificial joints by preventing periprosthetic osteolysis.  相似文献

This paper introduces new mathematical expressions which describe surface patches with three, five or six sides. Each side of a patch is given as a space curve expressed in Bézier type of second or third degree. Patch shape is modified predictably by moving its control points in the same way as with a four-sided patch. Distribution of cross tangent vectors along a patch boundary is also expressed in the same form with a few control vectors belonging to the boundary concerned. Therefore it can be connected with its surrounding four-sided patches smoothly. A general method of derivation of these equations is explained for further applications.  相似文献

The possible application of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) in transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDSs) for tamsulosin was previously reported. PHAs containing the drugs, ketoprofen, clonidine and tamsulosin showed good adhesiveness to the skin model used, that is, shed snake skin, and dispersed well all model drugs tested. The model drugs hardly permeated through snake skin in solution form. However, these drugs permeated well through snake skin from the PHA matrix. It was previously reported that the addition of a dendrimer, a polymeric permeation enhancer, is effective for the TDDS for tamsulosin to establish an effective clinical TDDS. The effect of dendrimer addition was examined in TDDSs for ketoprofen and clonidine. The dendrimer added did not show an enhancement effect on the TDDSs for the two drugs. To investigate the mechanism of the enhancement effect of a dendrimer on the tamsulosin TDDS, X-ray analyses were performed. With dendrimer addition, drug crystallization in PHA was promoted. The crystal in PHA had highly ordered and changed its space group. These findings are very important for exploiting high-performance PHA-based TDDSs.  相似文献

It has long been known that titanium (Ti) metal bonds to living bone through an apatite layer formed on its surface in the living body after it had previously been subjected to NaOH and heat treatments and as a result had formed sodium titanate on its surface. These treatments were applied to a porous Ti metal layer on a total hip joint and the resultant joint has been in clinical use since 2007. It has been also demonstrated that the apatite formation on the treated Ti metal in the living body also occurred in an acelullar simulated body fluid (SBF) with ion concentrations nearly equal to those of the human blood plasma, and hence bone-bonding ability of the treated Ti metal can be evaluated using SBF in vitro. However, it was recently found that certain Ti metals subjected to the same NaOH and heat treatments display apatite formation in SBF which is decreased with the increasing volume of the NaOH solution used in some cases. This indicates that bone-bonding ability of the treated Ti metal varies with the volume of the NaOH solution used. In the present study, this phenomenon was systematically investigated using commercial NaOH reagents and is considered in terms of the structure and composition of the surface layers of the treated Ti metals. It was found that a larger amount of the calcium contamination in the NaOH reagent is concentrated on the surface of the Ti metal during the NaOH treatment with an increasing volume of the NaOH solution, and that this inhibited apatite formation on the Ti metal in SBF by suppressing Na ion release from the sodium titanate into the surrounding fluid. Even a Ca contamination level of 0.0005 % of the NaOH reagent was sufficient to inhibit apatite formation. On the other hand, another NaOH reagent with a nominal purity of just 97 % did not exhibit any such inhibition, since it contained almost no Ca contamination. This indicates that NaOH reagent must be carefully selected for obtaining reliable bone-bonding implants of Ti metal by the NaOH and heat treatments.  相似文献

The ovary is the main secretory source of progestin and estrogen and is indispensable to the maintenance of all events of pregnancy in mice. The purpose of this study was to control all processes of pregnancy in mice, from embryo implantation to parturition, without ovaries. The ovaries were removed before embryo implantation, and a single injection of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) was given. Embryo implantation was induced by leukemia inhibitory factor, which can substitute 17β-estradiol (E(2)). Continuous exposure to E(2) was necessary at mid-pregnancy, when placentation was completed. All mice sustained pregnancy without ovaries before parturition, which was initiated by the removal of E(2) and MPA. Murine pregnancy is a complicated process involving embryo implantation, placentation, and parturition. Complete control of pregnancy was achieved with the simple treatment of MPA and E(2) after induction of embryo implantation. Here, time-dependent events in the uterus during pregnancy could be realized without the ovaries, because the initiation of each event could be stringently controlled by hormonal treatments.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between osseous changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and dental attrition in the Japanese macaque. One hundred and thirty Japanese macaque skulls (54 male and 76 female) from animals which had been bred in the same environment, were randomly sampled from a collection at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University. The age at death had been recorded in all cases. TMJ osseous changes were independently evaluated by three examiners, and were defined as an irregular surface or a perforated compact bone layer with a markedly irregular surface on either the temporal or condylar components. Age was a significant factor in predicting TMJ osseous changes (P < 0.001). A strong relation was observed between age and dental attrition (P < 0.001), while dental attrition was not a significant factor in predicting TMJ osseous changes (P = 0.334). The prevalence TMJ osseous changes in male animals was slightly higher than in females (P = 0.057). The results of this study suggest that osseous changes in the macaque TMJ are mainly related to age, not to dental attrition.  相似文献

We studied inflammatory reactions induced by dermal application of the beta-blocker propranolol (PRL) in ethanol to guinea pigs in order to elucidate the relation of the reactions with the cumulative PRL permeating amount through the stratum corneum or the PRL content in the stripped skin, and to investigate the chemical mediators responsible for the reactions. The cumulative PRL permeating amount through the stratum corneum increased rapidly up to 2 h after dermal application, then increased linearly with time up to 24 h after application. Visual observation revealed formation of erythema and edema at the applied site of PRL, and histopathological examination revealed infiltration of pseudoeosinophiles of dermis and epidermis and degeneration/necrosis of epidermis. In general, it was considered that the duration and the extent of these reactions were dependent on the PRL dosage and application time. It was expected that the cumulative PRL permeating amount through the stratum corneum could be used to predict possible inflammatory reactions during development of transdermal drug delivery systems. On the other hand, contact of PRL with guinea pig skin tissues released histamine, and intradermal injection of PRL caused an increase of capillary permeability at the site of application. Also, the inhibitory effects of anti-inflammatory agents (diphenhydramine, dexamethasone, indomethacin, cyproheptadine hydrochloride, CV3988 and AA-861) to PRL-induced erythema formation demonstrated that histamine and prostaglandins were responsible for the inflammatory reactions induced by PRL.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a large number of wireless terminals that are interconnected by a multihop wireless network called an ad hoc network. Design of routing protocols is a crucial problem in ad hoc networks. Location information of wireless terminals is an effective measure for ad hoc network routing. This paper presents a method to identify network topology implying terminal location and connections among terminals. A modified Self‐Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm is proposed to apply to the network topology identification. This method exploits information of the received power levels of the signals that are transmitted by other terminals. This paper has evaluated how network topology is identified by means of an example graph made by random numbers. The results show that only one bit information about the received power level in each terminal can identify network topology accurately with a mean error of about 10% for more terminals than a certain value. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
