As a major importer of forest products, Japan has a significant influence on the global development of forest certification. We examined characteristics of the certified forest products market in Japan. In addition to analysing chain of custody certificate holders using published directories, we conducted a nationwide survey from October to December 2005 of 132 companies that had obtained a chain of custody certificate from one of the certifying bodies in Japan: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, or the Sustainable Green Ecosystem Council. The number of chain of custody certificates has increased since the early 2000s and reached 304 by the end of 2005. FSC-issued certification has dominated certificate distribution, granting 93% of all certificates. Paper products companies have constituted the majority of chain of custody certification holders, receiving two-thirds of the certificates issued. Of survey respondents, 77% had sold certified forest products in 2004. The sales value of certified products reported by 84 respondents totalled 24.3 billion? JPY, of which paper products accounted for 90%. The main certified products sold were paper for plain paper copy and printing, wood chips as raw paper material, and printed material such as environmental reports and calendars. Certified wood products such as sawn goods represented only a small proportion of sales. As with companies in Europe and North America, it was not possible for most Japanese companies to receive premium prices for certified forest products. We successfully produced vapor‐grown carbon‐fiber (VGCF)‐incorporated polymer‐based functionally graded materials (FGMs) using a centrifugal method. Gradual VGCF incorporation within an epoxy resin effectively produced depth gradients in the fiber distribution, microstructure, mechanical, and electrical conductivities and microwave absorbing properties. This VGCF‐grading capability indicated that it is possible to tailor desired gradient filler content distributions by careful selection of the processing parameters to control variations in the property and microstructure precisely. The results confirmed that the volume content of VGCF in the epoxy substrate increased as a function of the normalized thickness along the centrifugal force direction, which caused a gradient. A uniform VGCF gradient in the composite can also be observed using field‐emission scanning electron microscopy. In the case of the electrical properties, for example, the volume resistance exhibited a depth‐graded distribution in the matrix as the electrical conductivity of the FGM nicely followed the grading direction; this is considered to be ideal for applications demanding an electrically conductive surface and an insulating core for FGMs. The results of microwave absorption behavior of FGMs indicate that the grading structure can lead to a graded absorption ability, which could be a better design for microwave absorption materials. Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is one of the major pollutants and is degraded by dissimilation by dehalorespiring bacteria. The dehalorespiring bacteria are anaerobic, and most cannot be cultured by conventional agar plating methods. Therefore, to identify the dehalorespiring bacteria that dissimilatively degrade PCE, a cultivation-independent method is required. To achieve accurate and detailed analysis of the bacteria, we developed a novel stable isotope probing (SIP) method. This technique involves 2 steps, namely, a labeling step, in which a labeled carbon source is incorporated into the sample's DNA, and an analysis step, in which the DNA is isolated, fractionated, and analyzed by polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). Subsequently, 16S rRNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis were performed to identify the bacteria. Initially, we examined the effectiveness of this method by using Dehalococcoides ethenogenes 195 consortium as a defined model system. The result indicated the method was able to correctly identify the dehalorespiring bacteria D. ethenogenes 195 from the consortium. Moreover, in an artificially contaminated microcosm experiment, we confirmed that the method was able to identify the indigenous dehalorespiring bacteria Dehalobacter sp. Thus, we concluded that this novel method was a feasible tool to identify dehalorespiring bacteria in natural environments. 相似文献

The contents and compositions of the 1-O-alk-1′-enyl-2-acyl, 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl, and 1,2-diacyl glycerophospholipids in the muscle and viscera of the ascidianHalocynthia roretzi, and of the gonad of the sea urchinStrongylocentrotus intermedius, which are eaten to some extent in Alaska and in Asia, were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. 1-O-Alk-1′-enyl-2-acyl glycerophospholipids were found in all of the samples, accounting for 64.4–69.0% of the ethanolamine glycerophospholipid
(EPL). By contrast, the levels of the 1-O-Alk-1′-enyl-2-acyl choline glycerophospholipids (CPL) were low (3.1–5.7%). CPL was rich in the 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl subclass amounting to 12.5–23.9% in the ascidian sample. The level of CPL in the sea urchin gonad was extremely
high, amounting to 46.1%. The most prominent alkyl chains in thesn-1 position of CPL from the ascidian muscle were 16∶0 (44.6%), 18∶1 (26.5%), and 18∶0 (10.7%), and of CPL from the sea urchin
gonad were 18∶0 (36.2%), 16∶0 (33.0%), and 18∶1 (17.8%). Unusually high levels of odd-numbered alkyl chains, e.g., 19∶0 andanteiso 17∶0, were detected in the CPL of all samples. The prominent alkenyl chains of EPL were 18∶0 (69.4%), 16∶0 (10.0%), and 18∶1
(8.54%) (not counting the vinyl double bond) for the sea urchin gonad. Relatively high levels of 20∶1 alkenyl chains were
also present. The glycerolsn-2 positions contained high proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Thus, 20∶5n-3 (43.6%) and 22∶6n-3 (20.1%) were most
abundant in the alkylacyl CPL from the ascidian muscle and 20∶5n-3 (54.9%) and 20∶4n-6 (30.1%) in alkylacyl CPL from the sea
urchin gonad. Despite a possible interconversion of the alkyl and alkenyl chains of each class of the ether phospholipids,

Pyrolysis is a promising technique for the recovery of useful gas, tar, and solid products from biomass waste. However, the low tar yields obtained from lignocellulosic biomass are a significant drawback. To enhance tar yields, sugarcane bagasse, which is the most abundant agricultural waste in Fiji, was pretreated at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure using various sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentrations. Here, the ether bonds of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin were partially hydrolyzed. The pretreated samples were then pyrolyzed at 500 °C, and it was confirmed that H2SO4-pretreatment disrupted the bagasse cell structure, with the thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry results confirming that decomposition occurred at lower temperatures after pretreatment. In addition, tar yields were significantly enhanced from 5.6 wt% to 13.4 wt% for the untreated and 3 M H2SO4-pretreated samples respectively. The main components detected in this tar product were levoglucosan, andcellulose-and hemicellulose-derived products, whose proportions were increased following pretreatment. Thus, our work demonstrates that dilute acid pretreatment enhances tar production from sugarcane bagasse due to the production of shorter chain components via the partial hydrolysis of ether bonds. 相似文献

The characteristics of bifacial solar cells with different rear structures were investigated under front, rear and bifacial illumination with an intensity of 0.4–4.2 suns. Five kinds of solar cells, rear flat local‐BSF cells, rear textured local‐BSF cells (textured RLB cells), rear total‐BSF cells, rear floating‐emitter cells, and triode cells with double‐sided junctions, were tested. The I–V characteristics of the cells under bifacial illumination were measured with a newly designed measurement system that simultaneously illuminated both surfaces of the cells. In the short‐circuit current (JSC) and the saturation current evaluations, the bifacial illumination effect, which means that the power output of the cell is intrinsically improved by adding rear illumination, was not observed. Although the RLB cells showed a nonlinear increase in JSC and enhanced VOC, these increases did not make a practical contribution to extra output because of the low levels of these characteristics. When we evaluated the maximum output power, the bifacial illumination effect was only observed in the triode cell. A novel solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack based on a cathode-supported honeycomb SOFC single unit, capable of generating high volumetric power density, was fabricated. Facile connection of the honeycomb single units is achieved using a metal interconnect with a gastight conductive paste. The honeycomb single unit is designed to use the outer honeycomb face and the anode layer on the honeycomb edge face as the current collection paths for the cathode and anode sides, respectively. Current is conducted between the cathode of a single unit and the anode of an adjacent single unit through the metallic interconnect. A two-unit stack exhibited an open circuit voltage of approximately 2 V and twice the power of a single unit at 600 °C under wet H2 fuel flow. The volumetric power density of the honeycomb SOFC stack at 600 °C was calculated to be approximately 0.6 W/cm3. 相似文献

Voltage–reactive power control (VVC) on power systems becomes difficult when a load increases or decreases rapidly, especially in the morning and at noon. This is caused mainly by two problems. One is delayed operation and the other is noncooperative operation of facilities. To solve these problems, an advanced method and algorithms for a centralized feed-forwarding control system are presented. They are based on two main steps: forecasting the power system state for several minutes and dispatching reactive power sources optimally based on stepwise linear programming. The proposed method is evaluated and tested for data of a large-scale power system. We introduced a triode structure with p–n junctions on both sides into single‐crystalline bifacial silicon solar cells in order to improve solar cell performance. These fabricated bifacial silicon solar cells have an energy conversion efficiency of 21·3% under front 1 sun illumination (the standard 1 kW/m2 AM 1·5 global spectrum at 25°C) and 19·8% under rear 1 sun illumination tested at the Japan Quality Assurance Organization.
