A simple procedure for measuring the R -curve properties of ceramics by a stable fracture test in three-point bending is described. As a typical case, data are displayed for a Si3 N4 material toughened by the presence of acicular grains in situ grown during the sintering process. The fracture mechanics specimen was a single-edge double-notched beam (SEDNB), whose notch was sharpened to a radius of <10 μm in order to reduce the amount of elastic energy stored at its root prior to crack extension. Furthermore, a stabilizer, specially designed for the bending geometry, was used to control crack stability. During stable extension, the crack could be easily arrested at selected locations of the load-displacement curve, the load quickly released, and the stable crack extension directly measured by the die-penetration technique. The crack resistance, K R , of the material was calculated from the measured crack extent and the onset load value before unloading. This method enabled us to precisely monitor the critical load value at which the load-displacement curve deviated from linear behavior, as well as crack extensions from a few tens of micrometers to about 1 mm. As an application of this method, the fracture resistance of a Si3 N4 material with rising R -curve behavior was measured and found to increase from about 5.5 to 9.0 MPaμm1/2 within a 0.8-mm extension. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Oral clonidine may influence plasma glucose and lipid homeostasis by modulating endocrinologic responses to surgical stress. The effect of oral clonidine premedication on plasma glucose and lipid homeostasis associated with exogenous glucose infusion were investigated in children undergoing minor surgery. METHODS: Otherwise healthy children (n, 120; aged 3-13 yr) were assigned randomly to six groups according to the glucose concentration of the intravenous solution (0%, 2%, or 5%, at a rate of 6 ml kg(-1) x h(-1)) and the preoperative medications (4 microg/kg clonidine or placebo given 100 min before anesthesia) they were to receive. The plasma concentrations of glucose, nonesterified fatty acid, ketone bodies, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol were determined. RESULTS: Infusion of 5% glucose caused hyperglycemia (mean glucose concentration >200 mg/dl) in six children receiving placebo and two receiving clonidine. Although the mean plasma glucose concentration increased in three placebo groups, it was unchanged and the plasma concentrations of total ketone bodies and nonesterified fatty acid were increased in children receiving clonidine and glucose-free solution. The plasma epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol levels in children receiving placebo increased in response to surgery. Clonidine attenuated the increase in catecholamines and cortisol. CONCLUSIONS: Oral clonidine premedication attenuated the hyperglycemic response, probably by inhibiting the surgical stress-induced release of catecholamines and cortisol. The JSNS, a spallation neutron source of J-PARC (JAERI-KEK Joint Project of the High Intensity Proton Accelerator) has 23 neutron beam lines. In the present study, a database was formulated for an optimum shielding design using the MCNP-X code. The calculations involved two steps. In the first step, the neutron distributions were created in the typical neutron beam line with a model that included the spallation neutron source target. The neutron currents evaluated flowed from the duct into the duct wall which was the boundary source for the bulk shield surrounding the beam line. In the second step, bulk-shield calculations were performed for the various shielding materials (iron, concrete, heavy concrete and so on) used and their composites up to thicknesses of 3 m. The results were compared with each other. Composite material shields of iron and such hydrogeneous materials as polyethylene or concrete were more effective. The reliability of Cu interconnects was successfully improved by applying a CuAl alloy seed. However, the effect of additive Al on the reliability is not fully understood. In order to reveal the reliability improvement mechanism, Cu films using CuAl alloy seed were investigated in detail. As stress induced voiding (SIV) as well as electromigration is caused by migration of vacancies and/or Cu atoms, the measured activation energy value of electromigration using CuAl indicates that the fast diffusion paths are Cu grain boundaries. The analysis using high lateral resolution scanning type secondary ion mass spectrometry (nano-SIMS) clarifies that additive Al in ECP-Cu film is mainly localized at grain boundaries. Furthermore, positron annihilation was used to probe vacancy-type defects in Cu films. The CuAl films before recrystallization contain larger and higher density vacancy-type defects. Whereas, the recrystallized CuAl films after annealing above 250 °C contain smaller and lower density defects. Furthermore, CuAl films with annealing above 350 °C contain less Al inside the grains. These results represent that Al atoms in Cu films with annealing above 350 °C are exhausted from inside grains to the grain boundaries, and the spewed Al atoms existing at Cu grain boundary effectively prevents the diffusion of Cu and/or vacancies. 相似文献

An active and soluble human beta1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta-GT) was produced in Escherichia coli using a maltose-binding protein fusion system. The purified recombinant beta-GT has a K(m) value of 0.035 mM for UDP-galactose and a V(max) of 643 x 10(3) nmol/mg/h. The enzyme catalyzes the transfer of galactose from UDP-galactose to N-linked oligosaccharides. The properties of the purified enzyme were identical to those of bovine milk beta-GT. 相似文献

The primary purpose of this paper is to develop a computational procedure for finding the Cournot equilibrium for a case in which many firms located at different points in space compete in many different markets located at different points in space. The model investigated here allows for the fact that not all firms sell to all regions. The algorithm is first developed under the assumptions (a) that the inverse demand function in each market is convex, and (b) that production costs of each firm are composed of a fixed cost and a constant marginal cost. ABSTRACTFollowing identification of radioactive Cs microparticles (CsMPs) in aerosol samples from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), numerous reports on CsMPs have been published. This paper reviews recent progress in the measurement and characterization of CsMPs by advanced analytical techniques, including advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and synchrotron X-ray analysis. These analyses revealed that the CsMPs contained Si, Fe, Zn, Cs, and minor quantities of U together with some fission products. Uranium in the CsMPs was identified as being in the form of uraninite and (U,Zr)O2. Detailed advanced TEM analysis has clarified some of the processes resulting in the alteration of constituents of the nuclear fuels and containment vessel materials during this severe accident. In addition, a detailed report on the elemental compositions and structures of the fuel debris fragments collected inside and outside of the primary containment vessel25 highlighted the fact that the fuel debris fragments contained nanoparticles with the U and Zr components having similar structures to that of the CsMPs. This similarity in structures has stimulated further research on the structure and elemental constituents, especially for U and Zr in the CsMPs, and has opened up new avenues for studying the chemical characteristics of the fuel debris. 相似文献
