A 20-ns CMOS micro DSP core for video-signal processing

A programmable 8-b digital signal processor core with an instruction cycle time of 20 ns is developed. A 37.5-mm chip is fabricated by advanced 1.0-μm double-level-metal CMOS technology. This processor has a reconfigurable high-speed data path supporting several multiply/accumulate function, including 16-tap linear-phase transversal filtering, high-speed adaptive filtering, and eight-point discrete cosine transformation. To provide high-speed operation within the chip, a programmable phase-locked loop circuit is built on the chip. This circuit generates a high-speed clock, which is a multiple of the system clock fed from outside, and is synchronized to the system clock     

Studies on syntheses and permeabilities of special polymer membranes

Summary The permeation and separation characteristics of methanol/n-pentanol systems and n-propanol/n-heptane systems through nylon 12 membranes were studied by changing the feed composition of the binary organic mixtures. These characteristics were discussed from the viewpoints of physical and chemical nature of the permeating molecules and the membrane.

Effect of plasma surface modification on electrical conduction in polyethylene

High-density polyethylene films 50 μm thick were exposed to the downstream plasma flow of RF glow discharges in argon, hydrogen, or oxygen. It was found that many transvinylene and unreacted radicals remain after the argon or hydrogen plasma treatment, and that carbonyl groups are formed in the oxygen plasma treatment. The conduction current was smaller in the hydrogen-plasma treated samples and the samples exposed to oxygen or ozone after hydrogen-plasma treatment than in the untreated samples. Thermal pulse current measurements indicate that the treated surface layer traps electrons or holes and reduces the field strength at the electrode surface, thus suppressing further injection of electrons or holes.     

Nonmechanical transverse scanning laser Doppler velocimeter using wavelength change

A transverse scanning laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) that does not require any moving mechanism in its sensor probe is proposed, and the scanning function is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. In the proposed scanning LDV, the measurement position is transversely scanned on the basis of a wavelength change induced by a tunable laser and a combination of a grating and a Dove prism. To demonstrate the scanning function in the transverse direction, an experiment was carried out using a setup of the sensor probe consisting of bulk optical components. The experimental results indicate that a transverse scanning function was successfully obtained. The scanning range in the vertical direction is estimated to be 11.3 mm over wavelengths of 1520 to 1570 nm.     

A self‐commutated back‐to‐back system and its performance under a single line‐to‐ground fault condition

This paper deals with a self‐commutated BTB (Back‐To‐Back) system for the purpose of power flow control and/or frequency change in transmission systems. Each BTB unit consists of two sets of 16 three‐phase voltage‐source converters, and their AC terminals are connected in series to each other via 16 three‐phase transformers. Hence, the BTB unit uses totally 192 switching devices capable of achieving gate commutation. This results in a great reduction of voltage and current harmonics without performing PWM control. Simulation results verify the validity of the proposed system configuration and control scheme not only under a normal operating condition but also under a single line‐to‐ground fault condition. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Analysis of a 36.2 kb DNA sequence including the right telomere of chromosome VI from Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The nucleotide sequence of a 36.2-kb distal region containing the right telomere of chromosome VI was determined. Both strands of DNA cloned into cosmid clone 9965 and plasmid clone pEL174P2 were sequenced with an average redundancy of 7.9 per base pair, by both dye primer and dye terminator cycle sequencing methods. The G+C content of the sequence was found to be 37.9%. Eighteen open reading frames (ORFs) longer than 100 amino acids were detected. Four of these ORFs (9965orfR017, 9965orfF016, 9965orfR009 and 9965orfF003) were found to encode previously identified genes (YMR31, PRE4, NIN1 and HXK1, respectively). Six ORFs (9965orfR013, 9965orfF018, 9965orfF006, 9965orfR014, 9965orfF013 and 9965orfR020) were found to be homologous to hypothetical 121.4-kDa protein in the BCK 5' region, Bacillus subtilis DnaJ protein, hypothetical Trp-Asp repeats containing protein in DBP3-MRPL27, putative mitochondrial carrier YBR291C protein, Salmonella typhimurium nicotinate-nucleotide pyrophosphorylase, and Escherichia coli cystathionine beta-lyase, respectively. The putative proteins encoded by 9965orfF018, 9965orfR014 and 9965orfR020 were found to be, respectively, a new member of the family of DnaJ-like proteins, the mitochondrial carrier protein and cystathionine lyase.
