AIMS: Variants of renin-angiotensin system genes are shown to be associated with cardiovascular pathology. The association between renin-angiotensin system genes and left ventricular mass was investigated in a population-based case-control study. METHODS AND RESULTS: The association between echocardiographic left ventricular mass and both insertion/deletion polymorphism of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene and the methionine-threonine variant at position 235 of the angiotensinogen gene was studied in a random cohort of 430 hypertensive and 426 control subjects. No differences in the adjusted left ventricular mass values between the different genotypes were seen among either the hypertensive or the control subjects, whether men or women, or in the subgroups of normotensive or physically active subjects. Gene variation had no statistically significant synergistic effect on left ventricular mass values. In control women, the deletion allele of the angiotensin-converting enzyme gene was associated with an increased risk of left ventricular hypertrophy. However, this finding was based on a small number of women with left ventricular hypertrophy and should be interpreted with caution. CONCLUSION: Variations in renin-angiotensin system genes had no major effect on left ventricular mass in this middle-aged population-based cohort of hypertensives and control subjects.  相似文献

Motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled in the United States since 1997--highlighting the need to better understand the many interrelated factors that determine motorcyclists' crash-injury severities. In this paper, using a detailed crash database from the state of Indiana, we estimate probabilistic models of motorcyclists' injury severities in single- and multi-vehicle crashes. Nested logit (estimated with full information maximum likelihood) and standard multinomial logit model results show a wide-range of factors significantly influence injury-severity probabilities. Key findings show that increasing motorcyclist age is associated with more severe injuries and that collision type, roadway characteristics, alcohol consumption, helmet use, unsafe speed and other variables play significant roles in crash-injury outcomes.  相似文献

The activation of the egg to begin development into an embryo is triggered by a sperm-induced increase in intracellular egg Ca2+. There has been much controversy about how the sperm induces this fundamental developmental event, but recent studies suggest that, in mammals, egg activation is triggered by a testis-specific phospholipase C: PLCzeta. Since the discovery of PLCzeta, it has been unclear whether its role in triggering egg activation is common to all vertebrates, or is confined to mammals. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that PLCzeta is present in a non-mammalian vertebrate. Using genomic and cDNA databases, we have identified the cDNA encoding a PLCzeta orthologue in the domestic chicken that, like the mammalian isoforms, is a testis-specific gene. The chicken PLCzeta cDNA is 2152 bp in size and encodes an open reading frame of 639 amino acids. When injected into mouse oocytes, chicken PLCzeta cRNA triggers Ca2+ oscillations, indicating that it has functional properties similar to those of mammalian PLCzeta. Our findings suggest that PLCzeta may have a universal role in triggering egg activation in vertebrates.  相似文献

We summarize our recent state-of-the-art programmable and reconfigurable detector and QR decomposition (QRD) implementations targeting 3G long term evolution (LTE) downlink and uplink requirements. The downlink transmission is based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, whereas the uplink transmission uses a single-carrier frequency-division multiple access. The downlink implementations are based on the programmable transport triggered architecture (TTA) which provides a flexible and energy efficient architecture template. In TTA detector implementation, the LTE detection rate requirements up to 20 MHz bandwidth and 4 × 4 antenna system with 64-QAM, are achieved by using 1–6 programmable cores in parallel. Each core runs at 277 MHz clock frequency and consumes 55.5–64.0 mW depending on the detector configuration. The downlink detector is based on the selective spanning with fast enumeration algorithm. The uplink field-programmable gate array (FPGA) detector implementation is targeted for 4 × 4 antenna system and 64-QAM achieving a detection rate requirement for 20 MHz bandwidth. The used FPGA board for uplink implementation is Xilinx Virtex-6 and the implementation has been carried out using Xilinx Vivado high level synthesis tool. Two different detector architectures are implemented. The first one achieves the detection rate requirement with a single processing block running at 231 MHz and the latter one with four blocks in parallel, each running at 247 MHz. The implemented detector is based on the K-best algorithm. A multiple-input multiple-output receiver requires QRD to produce valid inputs for the detector. In addition to detector implementations, QRD is also implemented on both TTA and FPGA. Modified Gram–Schmidt algorithm is used in both QRD implementations.  相似文献

This paper studies the use of received signal strength indicators (RSSI) applied to fingerprinting method in a Bluetooth network for indoor positioning. A Bayesian fusion (BF) method is proposed to combine the statistical information from the RSSI measurements and the prior information from a motion model. Indoor field tests are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the method. Test results show that the proposed BF algorithm achieves a horizontal positioning accuracy of about 4.7 m on the average, which is about 6 and 7 % improvement when compared with Bayesian static estimation and a point Kalman filter method, respectively.  相似文献

The authors discuss the fabrication and characteristics of high-power (PCW=430 mW) InGaAs/InGaAsP/InGaP ridge waveguide lasers emitting at λ=0.98 μm, which is the optimum wavelength for pumping erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. In the past, high-power operation of Al-free pump lasers has been limited to 150 mW because of catastrophic optical damage of the mirror facet. This problem has been largely removed by increasing the spot size of the laser with the aid of an improved waveguide design. As a result, Al-free lasers can now achieve a maximum power comparable to the conventional GaAlAs-based pump lasers for λ=0.98 μm  相似文献

Boron (B) deficiency is a common micronutrient deficiency that has been reported to affect the phenolic metabolism of plants. Thus, it may play a role in defense against herbivorous animals. However, the role of B in a plant’s resistance to herbivores has not received any particular attention from researchers. In this study, we tested the effects of B nutrition 1) on the biochemical and mechanical defenses of birches and the growth of seedlings, and 2) the resistance of seedlings to larvae of the autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata. Boron fertilization improved the resistance of birch, which was shown as reduced pupal weight of the herbivore. However, B fertilized trees suffered from heavier defoliation than unfertilized ones due to compensation feeding of larvae. The growth of the seedlings was diminished, and several biochemical changes occurred in leaves of herbivore seedlings, and B also played a role in these changes. Polyphenoloxidases (PPOs) and peroxidases (PODs) and their substrates, chlorogenic acids, were induced by herbivory in B fertilized seedlings but not in unfertilized seedlings. The lower pupal weights and increased consumption of the herbivores were probably linked to the plants’ phenoloxidase-mediated production of reactive quinones, which decrease the nutritive value. Herbivory upon new stems led to an increase in the number of resin glands that provide defense against mammalian herbivores. Herbivory also had a substantially negative effect on B concentration in leaves of B fertilized seedlings. We postulate that B nutrition of trees may play a significant role in the induced defense of birches.  相似文献
