Sixteen 200-L barrels were used to determine the effects of dietary forage-to-concentrate (F:C) ratio on the rate of NH3-N, N2O, CH4, and CO2 emissions from dairy manure during a 77-d storage period. Manure was obtained from a companion study where cows were assigned to total mixed rations that included the following F:C ratio: 47:53, 54:46, 61:39, and 68:32 (diet dry matter basis) and housed in air-flow-controlled chambers constructed in a modified tiestall barn. On d 0 of this study, deposited manure and bedding from each emission chamber was thoroughly mixed, diluted with water (1.9 to 1 manure-to-water ratio) and loaded in barrels. In addition, on d 0, 7, 14, 28, 35, 49, 56, 63, 70, and 77 of storage, the rate of NH3-N, N2O, CH4, and CO2 emissions from each barrel were measured with a dynamic chamber and gas concentration measured with a photo-acoustic multi-gas monitor. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block with 4 replications. Dietary F:C ratio had no effect on manure dry matter, total N and total ammoniacal-N (NH3-N + NH4+-N), or pH at the time of storage (mean ± SD: 10.6 ± 0.6%, 3.0 ± 0.2%, 93.1 ± 18.1 mg/dL, and 7.8 ± 0.5, respectively). No treatment differences were observed in the overall rate of manure NH3-N, N2O, CH4, and CO2 emissions (mean ± SD over the 77-d storage period; 117 ± 25, 30 ± 7, 299 ± 62, and 15,396 ± 753 mg/hr per m2, respectively). The presence of straw bedding in manure promoted the formation of a surface crust that became air dried after about 1 mo of storage, and was associated with an altered pattern in NH3-N and N2O emissions in particular. Whereas NH3-N emission rate was highest on d 0 and gradually decreased until reaching negligible levels on d 35, N2O emission rate was almost zero the first 2 wk of storage, increased sharply to peak on d 35, and decreased subsequently. The emission rate of CH4 and CO2 peaked simultaneously on d 7, but decreased subsequently until the end of the storage period. In this study, C:N ratio of gaseous losses was 32:1, reflecting higher volatile C loss than volatile N loss during storage. On a CO2-equivalent basis, the most important source of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emitted was CH4 until formation of an air-dried crust, but N2O thereafter. Taken together, these results suggested that the formation of an air-dried crust resulting from the straw bedding present in the manure reduced drastically NH3-N, and CH4 emissions, but was conducive of N2O production and emission. 相似文献

Suction feeding is the most common form of prey capture across aquatic feeding vertebrates and many adaptations that enhance efficiency and performance are expected. Many suction feeders have mechanisms that allow the mouth to form a planar and near-circular opening that is believed to have beneficial hydrodynamic effects. We explore the effects of the flattened and circular mouth opening through computational fluid dynamics simulations that allow comparisons with other mouth profiles. Compared to mouths with lateral notches, we find that the planar mouth opening results in higher flow rates into the mouth and a region of highest flow that is positioned at the centre of the mouth aperture. Planar mouths provide not only for better total fluid flow rates through the mouth but also through the centre of the mouth near where suction feeders position their prey. Circular mouths are shown to provide the quickest capture times for spherical and elliptical prey because they expose the prey item to a large region of high flow. Planar and circular mouths result in higher flow velocities with peak flow located at the centre of the mouth opening and they maximize the capacity of the suction feeders to exert hydrodynamic forces on the prey. 相似文献

The oxyacetylene torch facility is used to measure the ablation rates of graphite and the surface temperatures of different aerospace materials. The free‐stream flame environment is characterized as a function of flame chemistry for heat flux, pO2, and flow velocity. Measured ablation rates for graphite increase as a function of increasing heat flux and pO2, which are validated by applying an oxygen diffusion based model. The model uses experimentally measured values for temperature, pO2, and gas velocity in order to confirm torch testing results are reliable and reproducible. Surface temperatures of ultra‐high temperature ceramic composites are measured as a function of increasing heat flux and show an enthalpic cooling effect on the flame during oxidation testing. 相似文献

It is demonstrated for the first time that an epoxy thermoset resin can be cured at temperatures well below its Tg∞. This study compared the use of a uniform variable frequency microwave (VFM) field to standard oven curing at temperatures above and below Tg∞. Using Tg, tan δ, modulus, and FTIR measurements, it is shown that the reaction of BFDGE with MDA to attain a product with Tg∞ of 133 °C is achieved by VFM at temperatures from 100 to 140 °C; in contrast, the thermal cure normally requires 170 °C to attain the same Tg∞ and the same extent of cure. By following the pregel cure reaction with 13C‐NMR spectroscopy, it was determined that the lower cure temperatures of VFM cure predominately lead to chain extension and smaller amounts of crosslinking compared to the thermal cure. To explain these results, it is suggested that, after gelation, with VFM cure there is higher mobility from dipole rotations that continues the cure to completion without vitrification. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The production of hydrogen from methane via two chemical looping reforming (CLR) processes was simulated and thermodynamically analysed, one process being the conventional CLR process, the other being a CO2 sorption enhanced process. Metabolic remodeling is at the heart of diabetic cardiomyopathy. High glycemic fluctuations increase metabolic stress in the type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) heart. There is a lack of understanding on how metabolites and genes affect metabolic remodeling in the T1DM heart. We hypothesize that differential expression of metabolic genes and metabolites synergistically influence metabolic remodeling preceding T1DM cardiomyopathy. To test our hypothesis, we conducted high throughput analysis of hearts from adult male hyperglycemic Ins2+/− (Akita) and littermate normoglycemic Ins2+/+ (WT) mice. The Akita mouse is a spontaneous, genetic model of T1DM that develops increased levels of consistent glycemic variability without the off-target cardiotoxic effects present in chemically- induced models of T1DM. After validating the presence of a T1DM phenotype, we conducted metabolomics via LC-MS analysis and genomics via next-generation sequencing in left ventricle tissue from the Akita heart. Ingenuity Pathway Analyses revealed that 108 and 30 metabolic pathways were disrupted within the metabolomics and genomics datasets, respectively. Notably, a comparison between the two analyses showed 15 commonly disrupted pathways, including ketogenesis, ketolysis, cholesterol biosynthesis, acetyl CoA hydrolysis, and fatty acid biosynthesis and beta-oxidation. These identified metabolic pathways predicted by the differential expression of metabolites and genes provide the foundation for understanding metabolic remodeling in the T1DM heart. By limited experiment, we revealed a predicted disruption in the metabolites and genes behind T1DM cardiac metabolic derangement. Future studies targeting these genes and metabolites will unravel novel therapies to prevent/improve metabolic remodeling in the T1DM heart. 相似文献

Identifying the causes of sediment-associated toxicity in urban waterways of the Pearl River Delta, China 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Twenty-one sediments collected in urban waterways of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China were screened for acute toxicity using Chironomus dilutus in addition to being examined for potential contributors of sediment toxicity, including 19 organochlorine, five organophosphate, and nine pyrethroid insecticides, 28 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 27 polychlorinated biphenyls, 15 polybrominated diphenyl ethers, 12 metals, and ammonia. Fifteen of the 21 sediments exhibited acute toxicity to C. dilutus, with 33% of the samples exhibiting 100% mortality. This is one of the first studies in China which directly correlates a broad range of sediment-associated contaminants to ecological effects measured by bioassays. A toxic unit approach showed that pyrethroids contributed most to the observed toxicity; as cypermethrin alone was predicted to cause significant mortality in about half of the sites. Specific toxicity identification evaluation analysis confirmed pyrethroid toxicity. Other contaminants may also be supplemental contributors at a few sites. The current study suggests that pyrethroids are the principal cause of contamination and that future risk assessment and mitigation efforts in this area should focus primarily on pyrethroids but should not disregard other contaminants as potential risk is evident. 相似文献

Changes in aqueous- and solid-phase Pu oxidation state were monitored over time in magnetite (Fe3O4) suspensions containing 239Pu(V)-amended 0.01 M NaCl. Oxidation state distribution was determined by leaching of Pu into an aqueous phase followed by an ultrafiltration/solvent extraction technique. The capability of the technique to measure Pu oxidation state distribution was verified using 230Th(IV), 237Np(V), and 233U(VI) as oxidation state analogues. Reduction of Pu(V) was observed at all pH values (pH 3 to 8) and magnetite concentrations (10 to 100 m2 L(-1)). In the pH range 5 to 8, adsorption was a rate-limiting step, and reduction was mediated by the solid phase; at pH 3 reduction occurred in the aqueous phase. The overall reaction (describing both adsorption and reduction of Pu(V)) was found to be approximately first order with respect to the magnetite concentration and of order -0.34+/-0.02 with respect to the hydrogen ion concentration. Assuming first order dependence with respect to Pu, the overall reaction rate constant was calculated as k(rxn) = 4.79+/-0.62 x 10(-8) (m(-2) L)0.99(mol(-1) L)-0.34(s(-1)).
