Composition and thermodynamics of the surface layer of binary melts based on iron,cobalt, and nickel

The composition, thickness, thermodynamic activities of components, Gibbs energy and excess energy of formation of the surface layer on binary melts of iron, cobalt and nickel-based alloys with different interatomic interactions were evaluated with the aid of data from the literature and the authors measurements of the concentration dependence of the surface tension and molar volume.

Measurements of thick target fission yields as a probe of fission excitation functions for deep sub-barrier energies

A close-geometry experimental technique has been developed and used to measure thick target fission yields for protons on ²³⁸U from 4.2 to 12 MeV. Fission fragments were detected at back angles by an annular photo-voltaic detector in coincidence with γ-ray registered in large NaI(Tl) detector. The neutron induced fission background was monitored by a detector on the downstream side of the thick target. Measured yields compare well with those calculated from published thin target cross sections. This method has the required sensitivity to carry out measurements at still lower energies where recent measurements give conflicting findings.

Features of penetrating obstacles made of combined materials with strikers of different shape

Results of ballistic tests for obstacles made of combined materials in relation to striker shape are presented in the form of penetration curves. Diffraction characteristics of superimposed holographic gratings inplanar optical waveguides

A coupled-mode analysis of superimposed holographic transmission gratings in single-mode planar optical waveguides is presented. The diffraction characteristics are shown to be sensitive to the polarization of the incident wave, the angular separation of the output waves and the relative index modulation between the gratings. The coupling between gratings affects the diffraction efficiencies and decreases the angular and wavelength selectivities. Nevertheless, good channel separation and high fanout can be obtained together
