This study was designed to test the hypotheses that digestibility and post-absorption metabolism of fish oil are influenced
by impaired lipolysis and by the stereospecific composition of its triacylglycerols. Male Wistar rats were fed nonpurified
diets containing one of the following fat sources: 9% native fish oil (NFO), 9% autorandomized fish oil (RFO), 8.1% fish oil-derived
free fatty acids (FO-FFA) plus 0.9% glycerol, or 9% soybean oil (SO) as a reference fat. In a 24-day balance study, apparent
digestibility of total dietary fat averaged 93.1% in the SO, NFO and RFO groups, and 90.9% in the FO-FFA group. Randomization
of fish oil had no effect on apparent digestibility of individual fatty acids. In rats fed FO-FFA, apparent absorption of
saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids was lower when compared to the NFO and RFO groups. Feeding the FO-FFA diet tended
to increase plasma triglyceride content. The hypocholesterolemic effect of polyunsaturated n−3 fatty acids was not influenced
by the dietary source. Similar effects on fatty acid profiles of plasma and liver phospholipids were caused by the NFO, RFO
and the FO-FFA diets. We conclude that once polyunsaturated n−3 fatty acids are absorbed, their effect on lipid metabolism

The conductometric behaviour of NaCl, KCl and RbCl in ethanol solutions, in the presence of dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6, and of KI in acetonitrile solutions, in the presence of 12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, 18-crown-6, dibenzo-18-crown-6 and dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6, has been investigated. The analysis of data has been performed by means of the Fuoss-Onsager-Skinner equations and the results compared with the parameters of the same salts in pure solvents. The addition of crown-ether to the ethanol solutions gives rise to a greater decrease in conductivity for KCl and RbCl than for NaCl, so that the maximum difference in the Λo values which is 4.7 Λ unit in pure ethanol, decreases to 0.9 Λ unit. Also the association constant to ion pairs of the three salts which is appreciable in pure ethanol, decreases to zero when the crown-ether is added. In acetonitrile the difference in the Λo values for systems with and without crowns is small for 12-crown-4 (~2.9 Λ unit); it increases according to the complexity of the added crown (~21 Λ unit for the 15-crown-5, ~24 Λ unit for the 18-crown-6, ~ 30 Λ unit for the dicyclo- and dibenzo-18-crown-6). A small association constant value was found for the systms KI with 12-crown-4 and with 15-crown-5 in this solvent. The results of the above systems are discussed in terms of competitive interaction forces of the crown-ethers and the solvent molecules on the ionic species present in solution. 相似文献

In the last 5 years, Lake Victoria water level has seen a dramatic fall that has caused alarm to water resource managers.
Since the lake basin contributes about 20% of the lakes water in form of discharge, with 80% coming from direct rainfall,
this study undertook a satellite analysis of the entire lake basin in an attempt to establish the cause of the decline. Gravity
Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload
(CHAMP) satellites were employed in the analysis. Using 45 months of data spanning a period of 4 years (2002–2006), GRACE
satellite data are used to analyse the variation of the geoid (equipotential surface approximating the mean sea level) triggered
by variation in the stored waters within the lake basin. TRMM Level 3 monthly data for the same period of time are used to
compute mean rainfall for a spatial coverage of .25°×.25° (25×25 km) and the rainfall trend over the same period analyzed.
To assess the effect of evaporation, 59 CHAMP satellite’s occultation for the period 2001 to 2006 are analyzed for tropopause
warming. GRACE results indicate an annual fall in the geoid by 1.574 mm/year during the study period 2002–2006. This fall
clearly demonstrates the basin losing water over these period. TRMM results on the other hand indicate the rainfall over the
basin (and directly over the lake) to have been stable during this period. The CHAMP satellite results indicate the tropopause
temperature to have fallen in 2002 by about 3.9 K and increased by 2.2 K in 2003 and remained above the 189.5 K value of 2002.
The tropopause heights have shown a steady increase from a height of 16.72 m in 2001 and has remained above this value reaching
a maximum of 17.59 km in 2005, an increase in height by 0.87 m. Though the basin discharge contributes only 20%, its decline
has contributed to the fall in the lake waters. Since rainfall over the period remained stable, and temperatures did not increase
drastically to cause massive evaporation, the remaining major contributor is the discharge from the expanded Owen Falls dam. 相似文献

Models that link ecological responses to hydrologic changes are important for assessing the effects of flow regulation on aquatic and riparian ecosystems. Based on the Recruitment Box Model, a graphical model used to prescribe environmental flows for cottonwood (Populus spp.) recruitment, we designed a simulation model to represent the influence of river flow dynamics on seedling recruitment of riparian pioneer woody plants. The model simulates the influence of temporal patterns of river stage on dispersal, germination, initial recruitment and over‐winter survival of first‐year seedlings of riparian pioneer shrubs and trees. We used the model to simulate seedling recruitment patterns for five species (Acer saccharinum, Betula nigra, Populus deltoides, Salix nigra and Salix exigua) on the Wisconsin River (Wisconsin, USA) under three flow scenarios: historic (1935–2002), simulated natural (1915–1975) and simulated regulated flows (1915–1975). Simulation results agreed well with field‐observed relative differences among years (1997–2000) in seedling densities for the five focal species. Simulated successful recruitment years were highly synchronous among species, but species differed in their sensitivity to flows at different times during the growing season, consistent with among‐species differences in seed dispersal timing. Comparison of simulated natural and regulated flows for 1915–1975 showed that flow regulation decreased monthly flow variability, increased late summer to winter baseflow and reduced the magnitude of spring peaks. Simulated recruitment and over‐winter survival of tree seedlings of all species was enhanced under the regulated flow scenario, likely due to increased summer baseflow and reductions in peak flood magnitude. Our analyses show the utility of extending the Recruitment Box Model to include multiple species of riparian shrubs and trees, and the effects of post‐colonization flows on their recruitment success. However, some key functional relationships between flow patterns and woody seedling demography (e.g. shear stress thresholds for seedling mortality) have not been adequately quantified and merit further study. In this study, the combined effects of hydrological and chemical stressors on benthic macroinvertebrates were evaluated in order to explore the response of the biological community to multiple stressors. The Adige River, located in the south‐eastern Alps, was selected as a case study because representative of the situation of a large river in which the variety of stressors present in the Alpine region act simultaneously. As expected, streamflow showed a seasonal pattern, with high flows in the spring–summer period; however, locally, the natural hydrological regime was altered by the presence of hydropower systems, which chiefly affected low flows. Multivariate analysis showed seasonal and spatial patterns in both chemical and hydrological parameters with a clear gradient in the concentration of nitrate, personal care, and pharmaceutical products moving from headwaters to the main stem of the river. The macroinvertebrate community composition was significantly different in summer and winter and between up and downstream sites. Streamflow alteration chiefly due to water use by hydropower affected community composition but not richness or diversity. Gammarus sp., Hirudinea, and Psychomyia sp., were positively correlated with flow variability, increasing their densities in the sites with higher streamflow variability because of hydropeaking. The results obtained in this study show that the composition of the macroinvertebrate community responded to seasonality and to changes in the main stressors along the river and highlights the importance of the spatial and temporal variability of stressors in this Alpine river. The quantification of soil variability is one of the most important aspects in the geo-engineering context. The uncertainty analysis is the main part of the reliability assessment for which a quantitative evaluation was performed in this study. The Reliability Index and the Probability of Failure using the First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) represents both, an effective method which is easy to implement at the same time. This work analyzes possible effects of compaction induced into the aquifer of the Scarlino Plain, caused by the extension of the hydraulic barrier for groundwater remediation. The currently implemented vertical barrier is composed of 12 wells which reach the depth of 10 m. The improvement of the project involves the construction of a further 40 clusters, each consisting of a doublet which intercepts different depths (10 and 18 m). The models of the subsoil stratigraphy and of the groundwater were built using a numerical model. The groundwater flow and the piezometric surface in the current configuration of the barrier were studied and the project configuration was evaluated. Using the Aquitard drainage model, the land subsidence was estimated to calculate the maximum admissible displacement related to exhibited goods, the so called territorial vulnerability. The evaluation analysis was performed using a traditional deterministic approach, followed by a reliability method based on probabilistic models. Much of the scholarship on the work and legacy of activist Fannie Lou Hamer concentrates on her tireless efforts for civil/human rights and African American representation and access to electoral politics. This article brings to light an important project she started in 1969, Freedom Farms Cooperative (FFC) in Sunflower County, MS. An agricultural cooperative built on 680-acres, Freedom Farms included a pig bank, Head Start program, community gardens, commercial kitchen, a garment factory, sewing cooperative, tool bank, and low-income, affordable housing as strategies to support the needs of African Americans who were fired and evicted for exercising the right to vote. Freedom Farms offered these sharecroppers and tenant farmers educational and re-training opportunities including health care and disaster relief for those who wanted to stay in the Mississippi Delta. Using a historical method to analyze extensive archival records, this article offers an analysis of Freedom Farms and illuminates valuable lessons on agriculture as resistance, and alternative strategies of rebuilding and investing in sustainable communities. Using the principles of collective and shared ownership, Freedom Farms and the work of Ms. Hamer, offer us important and valuable lessons on rebuilding our communities and investing in sustainable cities around growing food. Flavour congeners in headspaces of 40 blended Scotch whiskies, of 4 different product categories (Deluxe, standard, retailer and West Highland), were collected by solid phase micro extraction (SPME) over 10 ml diluted (23% abv) whisky. Fibres (100 μm diameter) were thermally desorbed for 5 min in a split/splitless injection port and congeners quantified by high resolution gas chromatography. Two bonded SPME phases (polydimethylsiloxane and polyacrylate) were evaluated: exposure time was varied between 5 and 30 min; with whisky at either nosing (25°C) or tasting (37°C) temperature. Optimal analysis was with polyacrylate fibres at 37°C for 15 min but extraction at 25°C generated data relevant to sensory (nosing) data. Principal component (PCA) and discriminant partial least square (DPLS) analyses of mean % peak areas for all 57 resolved HRGC components and congeners (38) common to all whiskies gave product spaces showing clear separation of Deluxe, retailer and West Highland blends, but dispersed standard blends. In DPLS2 product clustering was similar whether relative (%) or absolute peak area was used in analyses but congeners loadings differed. From product spaces it was possible to assess contributions of flavour congeners, mainly esters and alcohols, to headspaces of individual blends and product categories. 相似文献

There is a continuing interest in the fate of DNA from genetically modified organisms (GMO) in the food chain including the
uptake of DNA by intestinal cells from dietary sources containing GM feed ingredients. The objective of this study was to
elucidate the uptake and persistence of foreign DNA in the intestinal tract of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. using in situ hybridization (ISH) that enables the intracellular localization of the DNA, and polymerase chain reaction
(PCR) to verify the ISH results qualitatively. Two salmon intestinal models were employed for the investigations; intestinal
tissues were sampled in two models namely (a) in vivo from salmon-fed diets containing 30% GM soybeans or 30% nonGM (nGM)
soybeans, and (b) ex vivo from intestinal sleeves incubated using different concentrations of PCR-amplified test DNAs (211
and 305 bp) designed from the 35S promoter/plant DNA junction of the RoundupReady soybean (RRS) genome. Additionally, for
the incubation study, the effect of a mucolytic agent dithiothreitol (DTT) and a permeability enhancer sodium deoxycholate
(SDA) on DNA uptake were investigated. Both treatments were found to enhance DNA uptake ex vivo. Dietary DNA and PCR-amplified
DNA could be visualized by ISH in the salmon intestine with more frequently observed signals in the ex vivo model compared
to the in vivo model. All results could be verified by PCR. Dietary DNA was localized in the cell vacuolar system and in lamina propria of the mid intestine. Thus, based on the investigated DNA fragment lengths, this study shows that foreign DNA, can be taken

Real-time PCR (RTi-PCR) is the technique of choice for event-specific quantification of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
by determining the amount of event with respect to a species-specific reference gene. Reference genes can be amplified from
the genome extracted from Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) or from ad hoc designed plasmids. In the present study, we
statistically evaluate the performance of RTi-PCR protocols for GM maize MON810 event by using both genomic DNA from conventional
CRMs and a plasmid containing sequences representative of four maize species-specific reference genes. The significance of
simple and interaction effects of several variables included in the experimental design on DNA quantification methods and
RTi-PCR were evaluated and discussed. Statistically significant differences on Ct values may have an impact on the GMOs quantification
and consequently on the compliance of GM quantification-established legal thresholds. Our results confirm the reliability
of the plasmid as alternative calibrant for the calculation of GMOs copy number. 相似文献
