Zur Kettenwachstumsgeschwindigkeit der intermittierenden Äthylenpolymerisation

A general method to determine the propagation rate constant of slow polyreactions is described. By this method it can be shown that the active species of the coordinative polyreaction of ethylene by the soluble ZIEGLER-NATTA-catalyst (C₅H₅)₂Ti(C₂H₅)Cl/Al(C₂H₅)Cl₂ is a very dynamic equilibrium product and therefore the propagation process of a growing species is continuously interrupted corresponding to its average lifetime. The results, up to now, indicate that the average lifetime of a growing species on given conditions is less than 2 seconds and the rate constant of the first insertion steps must be greater than 20 1/mol sec for toluene as solvent and at a temperature of 10°C.     

Structure-cytotoxicity studies on alkyl lysophospholipids and some analogs in leukemic blasts of human origin in vitro

Eleven lipids have been tested for cytotoxic (trypan blue dye exclusion) activity in cells from eight freshly explanted human leukemias in vitro. 4-Aminomethyl-1-[2,3-(di-N-decyloxy)N-propyl]-4-phenylpiperidine (CP-46,665), 1-mercapto-hexadecyl-2-methoxymethyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (BM 41.440), the 2-acetamide analog of platelet-activating factor (PAF) and 1-O-octadecyl-2-O-methyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (ET-18-OCH₃) were found among the most active compounds. 2-Lysophosphatidylcholine (2-LPC) showed the lowest activity. However, in addition there was variation among the results regarding the activity of the 1-octadecyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (ET-18-OH) and its D- and L-forms, but a significantly higher cytotoxic activity of D-ET-18-OH compared with L-ET-18-OH on the basis of 2-LPC as control after an incubation time of 48 hr. We conclude that with the limited number of structures available, this type of study is not sufficient to yield further information about the mode of the accumulation and toxicity of this type of lipids.     

Carbohydrate and phenolic constituents in a comprehensive range of rapeseed and canola fractions: Nutritional significance for animals

Cotyledons from 11 varieties of rapeseed and canola seed were extracted with hexane and analysed for tannins, α-amylase inhibition value, starch and available carbohydrate by conventional methods. The sinapine content (total sinapic acid esters plus free sinapic acid) was determined by a spectrophotometric method. Samples of soya bean cotyledons, high-tannin sorghum grain and commercial rapeseed and canola meals were also analysed for comparison. Sinapine in rapeseed and canola cotyledons was measured at mean levels of 2.67 and 2.85% respectively. Tannins were detected in these cotyledons but only at low levels. The α-amylase inhibition values were also low or negative. Starch was detected in negligible amounts, and available carbohydrate at 13–14%. The predicted metabolisable energy (ME) value of commercial rapeseed or canola meal for poultry was found to be numerically close to the determined value when the available carbohydrate value was reduced to 35% of the observed value.     

Diskontinuierliche Polymerisation von Vinylchlorid in suspension mit Temperaturprogramm

The batch polymerization of vinyl chloride in suspension can be conducted with constant rate of polymerization up to very high degrees of conversion by means of a temperature programme. The temperature programme was determined from some conversion-time-curves of the batch polymerization of vinyl chloride at different temperatures. The molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the poly (vinyl chloride) produced with the temperature programme are in agreement with the calculated respectively expected values.     

Inkjet printing of 3D metal–insulator–metal crossovers

The inkjet deposition of a single functional material on a substrate is well developed, however, little attention has been paid to the sequential printing of different functional elements to generate complex 3D structures. The successful all additive manufacture of electronics circuits requires the printing of features such as crossovers and interconnections, the passive elements in electronics where metal–insulator–metal must be sequentially deposited with retained function. We describe the inkjet printing of both a commercial silver nanoparticle metal and a cationic/thermally cured epoxy insulator, SU8, and discuss the role of print strategy and surface treatment on retaining functionality. The issues to be addressed in the successful all inkjet printing of such features are discussed.     

Measurement of the fracture toughness of polymer-non-polymer interfaces

One of the primary factors limiting the development of a better understanding of polymer-non-polymer adhesion is the lack of a good testing method for the measurement of the strength of the interface. In this paper polymer-non-polymer adhesion is evaluated in terms of the fracture toughness of the interface using an asymmetric double cantilever beam testing geometry. The test is applied to the measurement of polystyrene (PS)-glass and PS-silicon (native oxide) interfaces modified by PS-poly(2 vinylpyridine) (PVP) and PS-poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) diblock copolymers. The importance of mixed mode crack propagation is demonstrated and it is shown that through an appropriate choice of sample geometry, the crack-tip trajectory can be controlled so that the crack is forced to propagate along the interface. The PS-glass test, in particular, is shown to overcome many of the traditional problems of adhesion measurements, such as failure, away from the interface and effects of far-field deformation in the polymer. The interfacial fracture toughness of the PS-glass and PS-silicon interfaces without copolymer modification are approximately the same and weak with values of 1 J m^–2. The addition of the block copolymers results in significant (>40-fold) increases in the interfacial fracture energies. The increase in fracture toughness is dependent on the quantity and degree of organization of the block copolymer at the interface.     

Influence of communication during the distant phase of the 1996 republican presidential primary campaign

This study examines the influence of five communication modalities on voters' perceptions of candidates during what Popkin terms 'the distant phase' of the presidential primary campaign. During the final week of the New Hampshire primary campaign, researchers surveyed 315 prospective votes in four states whose primaries followed New Hampshire's by 1, 2, 4, and 5 weeks. The results revealed that political talk radio exerted the greatest influence on voters' perceptions of Bob Dole and considerable impact on perceptions of Steve Forbes. In addition, prospective voters' conversations with other people, television news, and candidate spots (only for Forbes) exerted modest influence on voters' perceptions of Republican candidates.
