In the last years, the increase of anthropogenic activities has led to a progressive pollution of ecosystems. Oniscidean isopods are a group of terrestrial animals known as excellent bio‐indicators and bio‐accumulators, because of their capacity to accumulate contaminants and to implement appropriate strategies of detoxification. For this study, we collected Porcellionides pruinosus from two different sites in the Corinth region (Greece), a polluted site and a control site, to assess the heavy metal pollution status. We conducted an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS) analysis for the detection of trace elements in animals' hepatopancreas and soil; we performed also immunohistochemistry for detection of metallothioneins 1 (MT1) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70s). The results suggest a great capacity of the species in trace elements bioaccumulation and the high degree of pollution of the area near Agioi Theodoroi where the metal pollution index (MPI) is threefolds higher than the control site, due to the presence of significantly higher concentration of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, and lead found in hepatopancreas and soil. The environmental stress is confirmed by the expression of the relative biomarkers of exposure MT1 and HSP70. Our study, with a multimarker approach, consents getting a complete analysis of environmental quality and the effect of pollution on organisms and shows for the first time the heavy metals contamination status in certain Greece area. Furthermore, P. pruinosus proved to be an appropriate indicator of pollution in terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献

A combined process of electrochemical formation of self-assembled porous anodic alumina thin films on a Si substrate and Si etching through the pores was used to fabricate ideally ordered nanostructures on the silicon surface with a long-range, two-dimensional arrangement in a hexagonal close-packed lattice. Pore arrangement in the alumina film was achieved without any pre-patterning of the film surface before anodization. Perfect pattern transfer was achieved by an initial dry etching step, followed by wet or electrochemical etching of Si at the pore bottoms. Anisotropic wet etching using tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution resulted in pits in the form of inverted pyramids, while electrochemical etching using a hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution resulted in concave nanopits in the form of semi-spheres. Nanopatterns with lateral size in the range 12-200?nm, depth in the range 50-300?nm and periodicity in the range 30-200?nm were achieved either on large Si areas or on pre-selected confined areas on the Si substrate. The pore size and periodicity were tuned by changing the electrolyte for porous anodic alumina formation and the alumina pore widening time. This parallel large-area nanopatterning technique shows significant potential for use in Si technology and devices.  相似文献

This article deals with the operation of markets during the famine and food crisis that occurred in occupied Greece in the period 1941–1944. Among other factors, the division of the country into three zones of occupation between which no movements of goods and people was allowed and the failed attempt by the government to control prices and production led to the collapse of the normal markets and the gradual but firm establishment of a black market. In the later years of the occupation, and in association with a rampant inflation, the black market was extremely volatile and heavily dependent on “shocks.” Even though the occupation governments, the press, the resistance, and post-war academics fiercely condemned the black market, oral evidence shows that virtually everyone was involved in some way in its dealings.  相似文献

Vitamins are organic compounds that are required for various biological functions. In general, vitamins are not synthesized in the human body, but lack or deficiency of them may lead to certain diseases. Determinations of 11 vitamins in various products were performed, which included ascorbic acid (C), seven vitamins of the B group (thiamine B1, riboflavin B2, nicotinamide B3, pantothenic acid B5, pyridoxine B6, folic acid B9, and cyanocobalamin B12), as well as three fat-soluble vitamins (retinol A, cholecalciferol D3, and α-tocopherol E). A column with RP18 stationary phase and a diode array detector with properly selected analytical wavelengths for each compound were used. A gradient of trifluoroacetic acid in water with methanol was used as the mobile phase. Limits of quantification in the range of 0.70–2.90 μg/mL for water-soluble vitamins and 1.85–15.84 μg/mL for fat-soluble vitamins were obtained. Those values are sufficient for determinations of the aforementioned compounds in foodstuff. The developed procedure of sample preparation together with chromatographic system can be used for food quality monitoring in the food industry.  相似文献

Notwithstanding the great improvement of ART, the overall rate of successful pregnancies from implanted human embryos is definitely low. The current routine embryo quality assessment is performed only through morphological criteria, which has poor predictive capacity since only a minor percentage of those in the highest class give rise to successful pregnancy. Previous studies highlighted the potentiality of the analysis of metabolites in human embryo culture media, useful for the selection of embryos for implantation. In the present study, we analyzed in blind 66 human embryo culture media at 5 days after in vitro fertilization with the aim of quantifying compounds released by cell metabolism that were not present as normal constituents of the human embryo growth media, including purines, pyrimidines, nitrite, and nitrate. Only some purines were detectable (hypoxanthine and uric acid) in the majority of samples, while nitrite and nitrate were always detectable. When matching biochemical results with morphological evaluation, it was found that low grade embryos (n = 12) had significantly higher levels of all the compounds of interest. Moreover, when matching biochemical results according to successful (n = 17) or unsuccessful (n = 25) pregnancy, it was found that human embryos from the latter group released higher concentrations of hypoxanthine, uric acid, nitrite, and nitrate in the culture media. Additionally, those embryos that developed into successful pregnancies were all associated with the birth of healthy newborns. These results, although carried out on a relatively low number of samples, indicate that the analysis of the aforementioned compounds in the culture media of human embryos is a potentially useful tool for the selection of embryos for implantation, possibly leading to an increase in the overall rate of ART.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) by short‐term toxicity tests in Apis mellifera, considered an excellent bioindicator organism mainly due to its sensitivity. Bees have been exposed to several concentrations of TiO2NPs (1 × 10?3, 1 × 10?4, 1 × 10?5, 1 × 10?6 mg/10 ml) for 10 days. Morphostructural and histological assays were done on gut and honey sac. The research of exposure biomarkers like metallothioneins 1 (MT1) and Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) was performed to verify if a detoxification mechanism has been activated in the exposed animals. No histological alteration on the epithelium of the gut and honey sac were observed in exposed samples. A significant positivity for anti‐MT1 antibody was observed only in the honey sac cells. A weak positivity for HSP70 was observed in both structures analyzed. In several studies have shown the non‐toxicity of TiO2NPs on other model organisms, in our study, titanium dioxide nanoparticles was proven to be highly toxic at the highest concentration tested (100% of lethality to 1 × 10?3 mg/10 ml) and moderately toxic at lower concentrations. Honey bees proved to be excellent models for study of NPs toxicity and for monitoring environment.  相似文献

Biological volatilization of selenium, Se, in a contaminated area is an economical and environmentally friendly approach to phytoremediation techniques, but analytical methods for monitoring and studying volatile compounds released in the process of phytovolatilization are currently limited in their performance. Thus, a new method for real time quantification of trace amounts of the vapors of hydrogen selenide (H(2)Se), methylselenol (CH(3)SeH), dimethylselenide ((CH(3))(2)Se), and dimethyldiselenide ((CH(3))(2)Se(2)) present in ambient air adjacent to living plants has been developed. This involves the characterization of the mechanism and kinetics of the reaction of H(3)O(+), NO(+), and O(2)(+?) reagent ions with molecules of these compounds and then use of the rate constants so obtained to determine their absolute concentrations in air by selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry, SIFT-MS. The results of experiments demonstrating this method on emissions from maize (Zea mays) seedlings cultivated in Se rich medium are also presented.  相似文献

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a global health challenge of vast proportions, as approx. 13.3% of people worldwide are affected annually. The pathophysiology of AKI is very complex, but its main causes are sepsis, ischemia, and nephrotoxicity. Nephrotoxicity is mainly associated with the use of drugs. Drug-induced AKI accounts for 19–26% of all hospitalized cases. Drug-induced nephrotoxicity develops according to one of the three mechanisms: (1) proximal tubular injury and acute tubular necrosis (ATN) (a dose-dependent mechanism), where the cause is related to apical contact with drugs or their metabolites, the transport of drugs and their metabolites from the apical surface, and the secretion of drugs from the basolateral surface into the tubular lumen; (2) tubular obstruction by crystals or casts containing drugs and their metabolites (a dose-dependent mechanism); (3) interstitial nephritis induced by drugs and their metabolites (a dose-independent mechanism). In this article, the mechanisms of the individual types of injury will be described. Specific groups of drugs will be linked to specific injuries. Additionally, the risk factors for the development of AKI and the methods for preventing and/or treating the condition will be discussed.  相似文献

Purinergic signalling plays a crucial role in proper functioning of the nervous system. Mechanisms depending on extracellular nucleotides and their P2 receptors also underlie a number of nervous system dysfunctions. This review aims to present the role of purinergic signalling, with particular focus devoted to role of P2 family receptors, in epilepsy, depression, neuropathic pain, nervous system neoplasms, such as glioma and neuroblastoma, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis. The above-mentioned conditions are associated with changes in expression of extracellular ectonucleotidases, P2X and P2Y receptors in neurons and glial cells, as well as releasing considerable amounts of nucleotides from activated or damaged nervous tissue cells into the extracellular space, which contributes to disturbance in purinergic signalling. The numerous studies indicate a potential possibility of using synthetic agonists/antagonists of P2 receptors in treatment of selected nervous system diseases. This is of particular significance, since numerous available agents reveal a low effectiveness and often produce side effects.  相似文献

This article presents a general method for studentizing weighted sums of a linear process where weights are arrays of known real numbers and innovations form a martingale difference sequence. Asymptotical normality for such sums was established in Abadir et al. (2013). This article centres on the estimation of the standard deviation, to make the normal approximation operational. The proposed studentization is easy to apply and robust against unknown types of dependence (short range and long range) in the observations. It does not require the estimation of the parameters controlling the dependence structure. A finite‐sample Monte Carlo simulation study shows the applicability of the proposed methodology for moderate sample sizes. Assumptions for studentization are satisfied by the Nadaraya–Watson kernel type weights used for inference in non‐parametric regression settings.  相似文献
