Understanding and controlling the chemical reactivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a fundamental requisite to prepare novel nanoscopic structures with practical uses in materials applications. Here, we present a comprehensive microscopic and spectroscopic characterization of carbon nanotubes which have been chemically modified. Specifically, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigations of short-oxidized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) functionalized with aliphatic chains via amide reaction reveal the presence of bright lumps both on the sidewalls and at the tips. The functionalization pattern is consistent with the oxidation reaction which mainly occurs at the nanotube tips. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), steady-state electronic absorption (UV-vis-NIR), and Raman spectroscopic studies confirm the STM observations. 相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of the calculation of surface integrals for electromagnetic scattering in the case of the widely popular double-triangular basis functions first introduced by Rao, Wilton, and Glisson (1982). An entire set of formulas is obtained which overrides the difficulties inherent to the singularity of the integrands, and results showing the stability, accuracy, and efficiency of the methods developed are reported in an application of the method of moments to the case of perfectly conducting surfaces and computation of near field in domains including the surface itself. An anaerobic sludge blanket process, termed the anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR), has been developed and shows promise for industrial wastewater treatment. It combines the advantages of high stability and reliability with a high void volume. The risk of clogging and sludge bed expansion with resulting high microbial losses is reduced and there is no need for special gas collection or biological solids separation systems. Organic loadings as high as 36 g COD l?1day?1 have been achieved with COD removal rates of more than 24 g COD l?1 day?1 and methane production rates exceeding 6 volumes per day per unit volume of reactor. The hypothesis, that the ABR may be adequately modeled as a fixed-film reactor, has been supported. Therefore, a unified approach, based on fundamentals of bacterial kinetics and mass transport, appears useful for modeling this and similar systems. Stone works of art exposed to the environment are liable to be deteriorated by the action of biological agents such as bacteria, fungi, mosses, etc. In ornamental fountains, the microorganisms present in water can contribute to these biodeterioration processes. This paper assesses the biodeterioration experienced by the Lions Fountain at the Alhambra Palace in Granada (Spain). Analyses have been made of the biodeterioration of Lions 4, 5 and 9, the biofouling of the fountain basin, and the water supply system. Conventional and molecular biology techniques have identified microorganisms belonging to various microbial groups (-, β- and γ-Protebacteria, Chlamydiae/Verrucomicrobia and Eukaryota). Additionally, on the mortar in the sculptures the presence of algae and bryophytes has been observed. X-ray diffraction allowed both the detection of neoformation mineral products that can be related with the presence of microorganisms and the corrosion products in the Lions Fountain. A number of recommendations are made regarding the prevention and control of biodeterioration in this important work of art. 相似文献

People have been using clay to make objects and shelters since time immemorial; but could it also be a key material of the future? San Francisco-based xyqmake-tank’ Emerging Objects has been experimenting with the use of clay in 3D printing, with sophisticated codes producing woven and textured forms and mixing different clays together. The studio's cofounders Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello here present these projects, as well as offering a potted history of clay's use and nature. Crises are common in today's unpredictable environment rising the importance of crisis response strategies. Two societies in Europe are chosen: Finland, where trust in society is generalized to institutions, and Spain, where trust in society remains on the level of individuals. Using the results of the European Communication Monitor 2013 survey on crisis communication, we explored three hypotheses: “certain types of crises are often met with certain types of strategies,” “cultural context makes some crises more likely than others,” and “cultural context makes some response strategies more likely than others.” We find evidence for all three hypotheses and discuss our findings about perceived differences in the two societies. The implementations of the eXtended Finite Element Method and the Boundary Element Method need to face the challenge of integrating singular functions. Since standard quadrature techniques usually produce inaccurate results, a number of specific algorithms have been developed to address this problem. We present a general framework for the systematic formulation of the three-dimensional case. The purpose of this paper is to present an extension of the generalised supertwisting algorithm (STA) to the multivariable framework. We begin by introducing an algorithm that may be deemed as a linear, quasicontinuous, or discontinuous multivariable system, depending on the functions that define them. For the class represented by such an algorithm we prove the robust, Lyapunov stability of the origin and characterise the perturbations that preserve its stability. In particular, when its vector field is discontinuous or quasicontinuous our algorithm is endowed with finite‐time stability. Due to its resemblance to the scalar case, we denote such finite‐time stable systems as generalised multivariable STA. Furthermore, the class of finite‐time stable systems comprise the currently available versions of STAs. To finalise, by means of simulation examples, we show that our proposed finite‐time stable algorithms are well suited for signals online differentiation and highlight their dynamical traits. 相似文献
