This work presents an ultrasonic method to characterize the layers of a stratified medium, using independent measurements of wave speed and thickness of each layer. The model, based on geometrical acoustics, includes refraction. Two transducers are used: one active (3.4 MHz) and a hydrophone as a receptor, which is moved laterally through 15 positions. The distance between the transducers and the delay between the echoes, from the interfaces separating the layers, received by them are used to estimate the speed and thickness. Three types of layered phantoms were used: Ph1 made with alcohol/acrylic, Ph2 made with polyvinyl chloride/water/acrylic, and Ph3 made with acrylic/water/polyvinyl chloride. The experimental results for speed of sound and layer thickness presented an experimental mean relative error, for thickness and wave speed, lower than 7.0% and 6.6%, respectively. 相似文献

A new technology, the simulated moving bed membrane reactor (PermSMBR), was presented and applied for the production of the green solvent ethyl lactate and of the biofuel 1,1‐diethoxyethane. Its conception was a result of process reintensification for oxygenates production, by integrating the simulated moving bed reactor with hydrophilic membranes to enhance the water removal, leading to high process performance. For ethyl lactate synthesis, the PermSMBR technology proved to have better performance than the reactive distillation (RD) and the simulated moving bed reactor (SMBR) processes; the RD and SMBR processes require more 152 and 165% of ethanol consumption than the new technology, respectively. For the 1,1‐diethoxyethane production, the PermSMBR also leads to a decrease in ethanol consumption of 69% and a productivity enhancement of 53%, when comparing with the SMBR. © 2010 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 57: 000–000, 2011 相似文献

In recent years, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has received increasing attention as a promising tool aimed at both treating microbial infections and sanitizing environments. Since biofilm formation on biological and inert surfaces makes difficult the eradication of bacterial communities, further studies are needed to investigate such tricky issue. In this work, a panel of 13 diaryl-porphyrins (neutral, mono- and di-cationic) was taken in consideration to photoinactivate Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among cationic photosensitizers (PSs) able to efficiently bind cells, in this study two dicationic showed to be intrinsically toxic and were ruled out by further investigations. In particular, the dicationic porphyrin (P11) that was not toxic, showed a better photoinactivation rate than monocationic in suspended cells. Furthermore, it was very efficient in inhibiting the biofilms produced by the model microorganism Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and by clinical strains derived from urinary tract infection and cystic fibrosis patients. Since P. aeruginosa represents a target very difficult to inactivate, this study confirms the potential of dicationic diaryl-porphyrins as photo-activated antimicrobials in different applicative fields, from clinical to environmental ones. 相似文献

Lysolecithin is an antiinflammatory emulsifier associated with improved apparent digestibility of total dietary fat and improved feed efficiency in dairy cattle. However, it is unknown if lysolecithin (LYSO) improves performance in calves. Moreover, since many conventional milk replacers use vegetable-sourced fat (e.g., palm oil), nutrient absorption and fecal score may be affected in neonatal calves. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of LYSO supplemented in milk replacer on performance, metabolites, and gut health of preweaned dairy calves. Holstein calves (n = 32) with adequate passive transfer were assigned in pairs (16 blocks) balanced by birth weight, date of birth, and sex at 1 d of age to randomly receive either LYSO (mixed in 2 milk replacer feedings at a rate of 4 g/d Lysoforte, Kemin Industries Inc., Des Moines, IA) or a milk replacer control (nothing added). Both treatments were fed 6 L/d milk replacer [22.5% crude protein, 16.2% crude fat (vegetable oil fat source) on a dry matter basis with 14% solids] by bucket in 2 daily feedings for 56 d. Calves were individually housed in wooden hutches and offered a commercial calf starter (24.6% crude protein and 13.9% neutral detergent fiber) and water by bucket ad libitum. Feed refusals and calf health was assessed daily. Weights and blood metabolites (glucose, total serum protein, albumin, creatinine, triglycerides, and cholesterol) were sampled weekly, and calves completed the study before weaning at 56 d of age. The effects of LYSO on calf average daily gain, feed efficiency, and blood metabolites were evaluated using a linear mixed model with time as a repeated measure, calf as the subject, and block as a random effect in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). The effect of LYSO to improve the odds of abnormal fecal score was evaluated using a logistic model. Supplementation of LYSO increased average daily gain (control 0.28 ± 0.03 kg; LYSO 0.37 ± 0.03 kg; least squares means ± standard error of the mean) and increased feed efficiency (gain-to-feed; control 0.25 ± 0.03; LYSO 0.32 ± 0.03). Similarly, LYSO calves had a higher final body weight at d 56 (control 52.11 ± 2.33 kg; LYSO 56.73 ± 2.33 kg). Interestingly, total dry matter intake was not associated with LYSO despite improved average daily gain (total dry matter intake control 1,088.7 ± 27.62 g; total dry matter intake LYSO 1,124.8 ± 27.62 g). Blood glucose, albumin, creatinine, triglycerides, and cholesterol were not associated with LYSO. Indeed, only total serum protein had a significant interaction with LYSO and age at wk 5 and 6. Moreover, control calves had a 13.57 (95% confidence interval: 9.25–19.90) times greater odds of having an abnormal fecal score on any given day during the diarrhea risk period from d 1 to 28. The inclusion of LYSO as an additive in milk replacer in a dose of 4 g/d may improve performance, and calf fecal score, preweaning. Further research should investigate the mechanisms behind the effects of LYSO on fat digestibility in calves fed 6 L/d of milk replacer with vegetable-sourced fat. 相似文献

An alluvial river channel typically meanders by eroding its outer banks and depositing sediments on the inside of bends, producing new land surfaces. Over time the landscape pattern created by these processes is important to the understanding of riparian plant ecology and the spatial structure of riparian forest development for restoration planning and design as well as other purposes. The middle sector of the Sacramento River is an actively meandering channel that deposits sediments in discrete new areas from fluvial geomorphic events creating a land age gradient. Newly formed land undergoes a primary succession by woody species such as willow and cottonwood communities that provide habitat for important conservation target species in California. Conservation and restoration of primary and secondary successional processes is an important management goal on the Sacramento River. The objectives of this paper were: (1) to develop and codify new methods to track the surficial chronological patterns of floodplain land age in a meandering river system, and (2) to analyze land production and the spatial distributions of gravel bars, riparian vegetation communities, and forest structure in relation to the land age gradient. Results from the ecological analysis indicate 71% of extant riparian vegetation was located within the 101-year meander zone; willow (18%) and cottonwood (31–43%) had the highest proportional canopy cover on lands aged 1–9 and 10–44 years, respectively. Potential applications of this approach for conservation and restoration planning and design of alluvial river floodplains are discussed. 相似文献

Human adipose derived stem cells have shown chondrogenic differentiation potential in cartilage tissue engineering in combination with biomimetic materials. In this study, the chondrogenic potential of a porous gelatin based scaffold genipin (GNP) crosslinked was investigated in human mesenchymal stem cells obtained from adipose tissue. Cells were cultured up to 4 weeks on the scaffold and on monolayer, MTT assay was performed to evaluate cell viability, light, and transmission electron microscopy were carried out to demonstrate cell proliferation, scaffold adhesion, and cell colonization inside the porous architecture of the biomaterial. The expression of chondrogenic markers such as SOX9, collagen type II, aggregan, and versican was investigated by Real Time PCR. Results showed an high cell viability, adhesion, and colonization of the scaffold. Real Time PCR data demonstrated an upregulation of all the chondrogenic markers analyzed. In conclusion, 3D gelatin GNP crosslinked porous scaffold provides an improved environment for chondrogenic differentiation of stem cells compared with cell monolayer culture system. Microsc. Res. Orange juice may be a nutrient vehicle that helps to improve diet quality. The addition of whey allows the incorporation of high quality proteins. However, a good acceptability is necessary. The aims of the present study were: a) to assess the acceptability of a beverage prepared with orange juice (J) and whey powder (WP) at 7 g/100 g (J+WP7) or at 13 g/100 g (J+WP13); b) to measure available lysine content and ascorbic acid retention of the more accepted formulation, comparing the effect of HIPEF treatment (29 kV/cm, t(acum): 59 micros) with a conventional heat treatment at 75 degrees C, for 15 minutes (HT). The beverages were subjected to sensory evaluation (Friedman test). Available lysine was assessed by the Carpenter method, modified by Booth, and vitamin C by HPLC; minerals Na and K, by flame photometry; Ca, Mg and Zn by atomic absorption spectrometry. There were no significant differences between the acceptance of J and J+WP7. J+WP13 was significantly less accepted (p < 0.01), so it was discarded. Available lysine (mg/g protein) in untreated J+WP7 was 60.2 +/- 0.15; after treatments: 50.0 +/- 2.8 (HT) and 51.0 +/- 3.4 (HIPEF). The HIPEF treated J and (J+WP7) retained 100% and 98% of their vitamin C initial content and the HT treated, 91% and 88%, respectively. The amount of whey powder added to the orange juice conditioned the acceptability. The juice containing 7% of whey powder was well accepted, and after treatment by HIPEF, it retained a good nutritional quality, regarding available lysine, vitamin C retention and provision of mineral nutrients. 相似文献

This paper presents a mathematical model for describing processes involving simultaneous heat and mass transfer with phase transition in foods undergoing volume change, i.e. shrinkage and/or expansion. We focused on processes where the phase transition occurs in a moving front, such as thawing, freezing, drying, frying and baking. The model is based on a moving boundary problem formulation with equivalent thermophysical properties. The transport problem is solved by using the finite element method and the Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method is used to describe the motion of the boundary. The formulation is assessed by simulating the bread baking process and comparing numerical results with experimental data. Simulated temperature and water content profiles are in good agreement with experimental data obtained from bread baking tests. The model well describes the stated general problem and it is expected to be useful for other food processes involving similar phenomena. 相似文献
