Giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) are considered to be the gold standard for assembling artificial cells from the bottom up. In this study, we investigated the behavior of such biomimetic vesicles as they were subjected to mechanical compression. A microfluidic device is presented that comprises a trap to capture GUVs and a microstamp that is deflected downwards to mechanically compress the trapped vesicle. After characterization of the device, we show that single-phase GUVs can be controllably compressed to a high degree of deformation (D=0.40) depending on the pressure applied to the microstamp. A permeation assay was implemented to show that vesicle bursting is prevented by water efflux. Next, we mechanically compressed GUVs with co-existing liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered membrane phases. Upon compression, we observed that the normally stable lipid domains reorganized themselves across the surface and fused into larger domains. This phenomenon, observed here in a model membrane system, not only gives us insights into how the multicomponent membranes of artificial cells behave, but might also have interesting consequences for the role of lipid rafts in biological cells that are subjected to compressive forces in a natural environment.  相似文献

This study describes the effects of the addition of inorganic nanosized UV absorbers on physico-mechanical and thermal properties of an exterior commercial acrylic-based waterborne stain for wood. Electronic microscopy and water vapor (WV) permeability measurements were performed to characterize the free films of the acrylic stain and resulting nanocomposite coatings. An accelerated weathering method was used to evaluate aging behavior of the coatings on wood through appearance, Tg, abrasion resistance, adhesion strength, hardness and Young's modulus changes. In addition to improving the protection against UV, the doped TiO2 and silica-coated ZnO nanoparticles in powder form have improved the abrasion resistance and barrier effect against water vapor diffusion of the acrylic stain. For most of nanocomposite coatings, the addition of ZnO hydrophilic nanoparticles in predispersed form has resulted in a decrease in WV permeability, while the adhesion strength and abrasion resistance of those coatings were negatively affected. The addition of ZnO nanoparticles has decreased the Tg of the acrylic stain. Finally, the accelerated weathering has induced an increase in Tg, hardness, Young's modulus (stiffness) and an increase in apparent adhesion strength and abrasion resistance of the coatings. The Tg values of the aged nanocomposite coatings were lower than that of unmodified acrylic stain.  相似文献

Gas-phase protein separation by ion mobility: With its ability to separate the Parkinson's disease protein α-synuclein and its autoproteolytic products-despite the small concentrations of the latter-ion-mobility MS has enabled the characterization of intermediate fragments in in vitro oligomerization-aggregation. New phosphorus‐containing poly(ester‐imide)‐polydimethylsiloxane copolymers were prepared by solution polycondensation of 1,4‐[2‐(6‐oxido‐6H‐dibenz < c,e > < 1, 2 > oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl)]naphthalene‐bis(trimellitate) dianhydride with a mixture of an aromatic diamine (1,3‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene) and α,ω‐bis(3‐aminopropyl)oligodimethylsiloxane of controlled molecular weight, in various ratios. Poly(amic acid) intermediates were converted quantitatively to the corresponding polyimide structures using a solution imidization procedure. The polymers are easily soluble in polar organic solvents, such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone and N,N‐dimethylformamide, as well as in less polar solvents such as tetrahydrofuran. They show good thermal stability, the decomposition temperature being above 370 °C. The glass transition temperatures are in the range 165–216 °C. Solutions of the polymers in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone exhibit photoluminescence in the blue region. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Glass ceramics are supposed to produce stable sealants between ceramic electrolyte and ferritic steel in planar SOFC stacks. The screen printing method is a suitable industrial process in order to produce layers with tailored height and width reproducibly. An appropriate suspension was developed for this application and improved by adjusting the additive composition. This study investigates the rheological behavior of screen printing inks and the corresponding topography of the printed layers. Rotary measurements were carried out to analyse the impact of shear rates on viscosity showing shear thinning behavior. In addition, oscillatory rheometry is performed to gain information about the viscoelastic properties of the slurries and to understand the internal structure of the developed inks. The viscoelasticity and the recovery behavior after shear loading are crucial for the topography of printed films. The principal investigations are executed on solvent-based suspensions, whereby the knowledge gained is used for a transfer to water-based systems allowing a more environmentally friendly handling.  相似文献

Soluble, easily processable polymer–metal complexes with improved optical and dielectric properties for optoelectronic functional materials were obtained. For this, a new polyazomethine (PAZ2) was prepared by the reaction of a siloxane dialdehyde and bis(formyl‐p‐phenoxymethyl) tetramethyldisiloxane with 2,5‐bis(p‐aminophenyl)‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole, and it was used as a ligand for Cu(II), Co(II), and Zn(II) ions on the basis of the presence of the electron‐donor nitrogen atoms from the azomethine group and oxadiazole ring. The structure of the PAZ2 was determined by spectral [Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy] techniques. The metal complexation was proven by FTIR spectroscopy, and the silicon‐to‐metal ratios in the complexes were established by energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence. The new materials were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The optical properties of PAZ2 and the derived metal complexes were studied by ultraviolet–visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. PAZ2 shows fluorescence emission, and it was significantly enhanced by metal complexation. The emission was enhanced by protonation; this behavior is useful, especially for sensors. The electrical properties were investigated by dielectric spectroscopy at various frequencies and temperatures, and this emphasized the existence of dipolar relaxations. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Powder dyes exhibit even more pronounced sorption behaviour than fibres. The moisture content and weight of the dyes and yarns change according to the ambient relative humidity. In this study, the variations determined in dyehouse stores caused weight changes and subsequent dyeings showed differences of Δ□E* and Δ□L* beyond permissible levels. The detrimental influence on the ability to reach right‐first‐time level of acceptance substantially diminishes the profit margin. The consequence for computer colour‐matching should be the integration of the moisture content of dyes and goods in the recipe calculation. From a technological viewpoint, however, it seems preferable to avoid any fluctuation in relative humidity where dyes and goods are stored. The costs incurred for investment in humidity control will pay in the long run and the factor of moisture content may be entirely negligible.  相似文献

Crosslinked copolymers of acrylamide (AA) and ethylacrylate and some ion exchangers derived from them containing either primary amine groups, obtained by the Hofmann degradation of the amide groups, or carboxylic groups, obtained by the alkaline hydrolysis of the ester groups, were studied. Divinylbenzene and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide were used as crosslinkers. The starting copolymers and the corresponding ion exchangers were characterized by IR spectroscopy, swelling behavior, and thermogravimetric analysis. The ion‐exchanger properties were correlated with the crosslinker nature and the chemical reactions performed on the AA copolymers. The average molecular weight between two crosslinks, determined from the swelling data in water, was compared with that calculated on the basis of the copolymerization stoichiometry only for the carboxylic cation exchangers.
