In-vehicle technologies (IVTs) create additional tasks for the driver. To the extent that these devices degrade driving performance, there will be safety concerns. This study examines the effects of display clutter from overlay, display separation, and modality on driving and IVT task performance. In a fixed-base simulator, 22 drivers drove different routes and responded to infrequent, unexpected road hazards while engaging in a phone number task presented by different displays. Visual displays were located on a head-up (overlaid on the visual horizon or adjacently, just above the vehicle hood) or head-down display (HDD) located near the midconsole. Alternatively, digits were presented auditorily. In general, there were no differences in performance for the adjacent and overlay displays; however, there were costs associated with the HDD and auditory display for some measures. In particular, responses to hazard events were slowed when drivers used the HDD. Overall, the adjacent display best supported performance on all relevant tasks. Potential applications of this research include the design of IVTs with respect to location and modality.  相似文献

We examined temporal differences in sedimentary production of monomethylmercury (MMHg) at three sites in Long Island Sound (LIS). Sediment-phase concentrations of Hg species decreased from west to east in LIS surface sediments, following the trend of organic matter. However, Hg methylation potentials, measured by incubation with an isotopic tracer (200Hg), increased from west to east. 200Hg methylation potentials were enhanced in August relative to March and June, attributable to differences in activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Organic matter and acid-volatile sulfide influenced the distribution coefficient (KD) of inorganic Hg (Hg(II) = total Hg - MMHg) and inhibited 200Hg methylation in surface sediments. 200Hg methylation varied inversely with the KD of Hg(II) and positively with the concentration of Hg(II), mostly as HgS0, in LIS pore waters. Accordingly, we posit that a principal control on MMHg production in low-sulfide, coastal marine sediments is partitioning of Hg(II) between particle and dissolved phases, which regulates availability of Hg substrate to methylating bacteria. Most of the partitioning in LIS sediments is due to Hg-organic associations. This suggests that reductions in the organic content of coastal sediment, a potential result of nutrient abatement programs intended to inhibit eutrophication of near-shore waters, could enhance MMHg production by increasing the bioavailability of the large reservoir of "legacy Hg" buried within the sediment.  相似文献

The concentrations and distribution of platinum group elements (Pt, Pd, Rh) in airborne particulate matter were studied in a period of one year from August 2001 to July 2002 in urban and in nonurban areas. Airborne dust samples were collected as a total amount (particles with an aerodynamic diameter <22 microm) and classified using an eight-stage Andersen impactor (<10 microm) at three locations with different traffic density roads in the Frankfurt am Main and nonurban areas. Sampling at the three locations was performed simultaneously for total airborne dust and fractionated airborne dust. Pd was determined by total reflection X-ray fluorescence after Hg coprecipitation. Pt and Rh were analyzed by adsorptive striping voltammetry after HPA digestion. The results show that the PGE concentrations in airborne samples depend on the traffic density. The highest PGE concentrations in air were found in the vicinity of major roads with heavy traffic, and the lowest ones were found in the nonurban area. The presence of PGE at the sampling station relatively free of traffic in a nonurban area hints to a transport of some of the emitted PGE from the city to this station by wind. At all three sampling locations, a heterogeneous distribution of the Pd, Pt, and Rh concentrations during the sampling year can be observed. The sum of PGE concentrations in total airborne dust is comparable with the sum of impactor samples. However, the concentration of Pt and Rh in total airborne dust (<22 microm) is on average higher than in impactor samples (<10 microm). On the contrary, Pd concentration is higher in impactor samples in most cases. The airborne PGE distribution is dominated by Pt, followed by Pd and Rh. The impactor samples are dominated by Pd, followed by Pt and Rh. This fact indicates that palladium occurs mainly in relatively fine airborne particles. The main fraction of PGE is found on average in particle sizes between 1.1 and 4.7 microm. Knowledge of the size distribution of particles containing PGE is important with respect to risk assessment of human inhalation.  相似文献

Absolute rate constants for the reactions of the hydroxyl radical, hydrated electron, and hydrogen atom with N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in water at room temperature have been determined using electron pulse radiolysis and transient absorption spectroscopy (*OH and e- aq) and EPR free induction decay attenuation (*H) measurements. Specific values of (4.30 +/- 0.12) x 10(8), (1.41 +/- 0.02) x 10(10), and (2.01 +/- 0.03) x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1) were measured, respectively. DMPO spin-trapping experiments demonstrated that the hydroxyl radical reaction with NDMA occurs by hydrogen atom abstraction from a methyl group, and the rate constant for the subsequent reaction of this radical transient with dissolved oxygen was measured as (5.3 +/- 0.6) x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1). This relatively slow rate constant implies that regeneration of the parent nitrosoamine from the oxidized transient could occur in natural waters containing dissolved organic compounds. The reaction of the hydrated electron with NDMA was to form a transient adduct anion, which could subsequently transfer this excess electron to regenerate the parent chemical. Such regeneration reactions would significantly reduce the effectiveness of any applied advanced oxidation technology remediation effort on NDMA-contaminated natural waters.  相似文献

Chlorination of treated wastewaters is undertaken to prevent dispersal of human pathogens into the environment. Except in well-nitrified effluents, the primary agents in chlorination, Cl2(g) or NaOCl(aq), are short-lived and quickly transfer oxidative chlorine to secondary agents (N-chloramines), which then participate in the disinfection process. Maturation of residual chlorine resulting from chlorine-transfer reactions is still poorly characterized. Using gel permeation and reversed-phase liquid chromatography combined with a novel, oxidant-specific detector, unanticipated trends during the maturation of residual chlorine in wastewater are identified. Within 2 min after addition of NaOCl, and continuing for several hours at least, significant amounts of oxidative chlorine are transferred to secondary agents that are moderately to strongly hydrophobic and to agents that have high relative molecular masses (Mr 1300-25000). It is hypothesized that hydrophobic stabilization of organic chloramines (RNHCl(o)) thermodynamically drives these transfers, making macromolecular chloramines the ultimate oxidative chlorine carriers. Macromolecular chloramines are expected to be sluggish oxidants, as observed in their reduction by sulfite, and are expected to be poor disinfectants. If transfer of oxidative chlorine to high Mr components occurs widely at treatment plants, then this phenomenon offers a new, physicochemical explanation for the well-known impotency of organic chloramines in wastewater disinfection.  相似文献

Neuronal cell networks have been reconstructed on planar microelectrode arrays (MEAs) from dissociated hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Microcontact printing (microCP) and a photoresist-liftoff method were used to selectively localize poly-L-lysine (PLL) on the surface of MEAs. Haptotaxis led to the organization of the neurons into networks localized adjacent to microelectrodes. Various grids of PLL with 2-25-microm-wide lines spaced by 50-200 microm with 15-25-microm nodes at intersection points were used to guide cell body attachment and neurite outgrowth. Bursting activity with spike amplitude attenuation was observed, and multichannel recordings detected instances of coincident firing activity. Finally, we present here an extracellular recording from a approximately 2 microm bundle of guided neurites.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for automatic tracking of the head, tail, and entire body movement of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) using computer vision and digital image analysis techniques. The characteristics of the worm's movement, posture and texture information were extracted from a 5-min image sequence. A Random Forests classifier was then used to identify the worm type, and the features that best describe the data. A total of 1597 individual worm video sequences, representing wild type and 15 different mutant types, were analyzed. The average correct classification ratio, measured by out-of-bag (OOB) error rate, was 90.9%. The features that have most discrimination ability were also studied. The algorithm developed will be an essential part of a completely automated C. elegans tracking and identification system.  相似文献

Detection of lead and mercury by attenuated total internal reflectance spectroscopy coupled to stripping voltammetry is demonstrated. Changes in attenuation of light passing through an indium tin oxide optically transparent electrode (ITO-OTE) accompany the electrodeposition and stripping of lead and mercury on the electrode surface. The change in absorbance during stripping of electrodeposited metal constitutes the analytical response that enables detection over a range of 2.5 x 10(-7)-5 x 10(-5) and 5 x 10(-8)-5 x 10(-5) M for mercury and lead, respectively. The spectroelectrochemical responses of mercury and lead on the ITO surface are characterized and optimized with respect to solution conditions, the potential excitation signals used for deposition and stripping, and wavelength for detection. The deposited metals were examined by environmental scanning electron miscroscopy, and the electrodeposition pattern of lead and mercury was found to influence the optical response.  相似文献

An indandione-containing class of inhibitors abrogates DNA replication of human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 by binding reversibly to the transactivation domain (TAD) of the viral E2 protein and inhibiting its interaction with the viral E1 helicase. To locate the binding site of this class of protein-protein interaction inhibitors, a benzophenone derivative was used to generate an irreversibly labeled E2-TAD polypeptide. The single site of covalent modification of the E2-TAD was identified by proteolytic digestions using trypsin, LysC, and V8 proteases and characterization of the resulting peptides by LC-MS procedures. Through this methodology, the benzophenone attachment point was located at the terminal methyl of residue Met101. Evidence further pinpointed the site of photoaffinity attachment to the terminal carbon atom, which is significant in providing a definitive example of the ability to locate photoinduced cross-linking to a polypeptide with atomic resolution using solely mass spectrometric detection. The location of the inhibitor binding site vis-à-vis the Glu39 and Glu100 residues sensitive to mutation for HPV 11 E2-TAD is discussed in relation to the crystal structure of the E2-TAD from the related HPV type 16.  相似文献
