Balanced operation of a GaInAs/GaInAsP multiple-quantum-wellintegrated heterodyne receiver

The balanced operation of a multiple-quantum-well balanced heterodyne receiver photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is described. Using only SMA-connected 50 Ω commercial electronics, a free-space beam sensitivity of -42.3 dBm at 108 Mb/s and -39.7 dBm at 200 Mb/s for NRZ FSK (frequency-shift keying) reception has been achieved. This represents a 14 dB improvement over any previous heterodyne receiver PIC sensitivity. In addition to providing the multichannel benefits of heterodyne reception, this is also the highest sensitivity yet reported for any OEIC (optoelectronic integrated circuit) receiver     

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater through struvite formation in fluidized bed reactors: a sustainable approach.

Recovery of phosphate as struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O), before it forms and accumulates on wastewater treatment equipment, solves wastewater treatment problems and also provides environmentally sustainable, renewable nutrient source for the agriculture sector. A pilot-scale fluidized bed reactor was used to recover phosphate through crystallization of struvite, from anaerobic digester centrate at the Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The desired degree of phosphate removal was achieved by maintaining operating pH (8.0-8.2), and recycle ratio 5-9, to control the supersaturation conditions inside the reactor. The performance of the system was found to be optimal when in-reactor supersaturation ratio was 2-6. Among several other operating parameters, apparent upflow velocity and magnesium to phosphate molar ratio were also found important to maintain system performance, both in terms of efficiency of phosphate removal and recovery as struvite pellets. A narrow window of upflow velocity (400-410 cm/min) was found to be effective in removing 75-85% phosphate. TOC level inside the rector was found to affect the performance to some extent. The precipitation potential of struvite could be successfully predicted using a thermodynamic solubility product value of 10(-13.36) and its temperature dependence in PHREEQC.     

5-W Yellow Laser by Intracavity Frequency Doubling of High-Power Vertical-External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser

We report on the development of a high-power tunable yellow–orange laser. It is based on intracavity frequency doubling of a widely tunable, highly strained InGaAs–GaAs vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser operating near 1175 nm. Over 5 W of continuous-wave output power is achieved and is tunable over a 15-nm band centered at 587 nm. This compact low-cost high-power yellow–orange laser provides an innovative alternative for sodium guidestar lasers, medical and communication applications.      

Magnetic properties and critical currents of epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-x films

The authors report results of magnetic and transport measurements on thin epitaxial films of YBa₂Cu₃O_7-x which show critical current densities of 10⁷ A/cm² at 4.2 K. They exhibit well-formed symmetrical hysteresis loops and flux-trapping effects and linear susceptibilities at low fields. Magnetic and transport critical currents are in good agreement at low temperatures. The above properties are attributed to strong pinning from point defects which are suggested to be more numerous in films than in bulk single crystals. Diamagnetic shielding effects can be very large and are proportional to the critical current at zero field; however, there is a large penetration of H_a at all field values. Field-cooled magnetization is always very small, being only a few percent of the diamagnetic shielding. This small value is attributed to a balance between trapped flux and expelled flux in the cooling process. The strong pinning in attributed to a high density of defects in the film     

Biological evaluation and structural determinants of p38α mitogen-activated-protein kinase and c-Jun-N-terminal kinase 3 inhibition by flavonoids

A series of 42 naturally occurring flavonoids and one flavonoid glucuronide were tested for their ability to inhibit p38α mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38α) and c-Jun-N-terminal kinase 3 (JNK3). Potent inhibitors with IC(50) values in the low micromolar range were identified. Structure-activity relationships were evaluated and the most promising compounds were docked into the ATP binding site of these kinases. Among the different classes of flavonoids, the flavonol group showed better inhibition of p38α. Of this class, kaempferol-7,4'-dimethylether was a potent p38α inhibitor, displaying 13-fold selectivity for p38α over JNK3. The flavone compounds without a 6-methoxy group preferentially inhibited JNK3. The flavone glycoside, luteolin-7-O-glycoside, was identified as a potent inhibitor with the greatest selectivity toward JNK3. In contrast, the flavanol compounds displayed similar inhibitory activities toward both kinases.
