We consider semiconductor devices composed of a small quantum structure as the active device region and two classical environments constituting the source- and the drain contact. The contacts are taken as free electron gases with infinite conductivity defining the chemical potentials in the contacts. The transport through the quantum structure is described in the Landauer–Büttiker formalism using electronic scattering wave functions which determine the electron density in the quantum system. In our Hartree approximation these charges and the induced charges in the contacts are the sources of the self-consistent Coulomb field. As a particular quantum structure we study a GaAs heterostructure device consisting of a two-dimensional electron gas sandwiched between a gate contact and an AlGaAs blocking barrier [see V.T. Dolgopolov et al., Phys. Low-Dim. Struct. 6 (1996) 1]. We demonstrate the quantitative agreement of our theory with the experimental results.  相似文献

Motorcycle-automobile accidents occur predominantly when the car driver turns left across the motorcyclist's right-of-way. Efforts to decrease this specific collision configuration, through an increase in motorcycle conspicuity, have concentrated on the physical characteristics of the motorcycle and its rider. The work reported here examines the behavior of car drivers during different driving sequences, in particular during left-turn maneuvers. An experiment is reported that used simultaneous video-taping of the driver and the forward-looking scene. Subjects followed a preset on-road course and were observed for head movements to determine the possibility of structural interference eye-blink frequency, probe-response time, and probe response error, as measures of cognitive or mental workload. In addition, the subjects completed two major subjective workload evaluations as reflections of effort directed to different components of the driving task. Results indicated that there were significant increases in head movements and mental workload during turn sequences compared to straight driving. This result of higher driver workload may be responsible for increasing the potential for detection failure. Such a propensity is also fostered by the higher structural interference that may be expected during turns. Failures to observe during turning sequences have differing outcomes depending on the presence of opposing traffic, as during the left turn, compared with the absence of such opposition, as occurs in the right turn. Also, the less conspicuous the oncoming vehicle in the left turn scenario, the higher the probability of detection failure. At the present time the least conspicuous powered vehicle is the motorcycle.  相似文献

Ergothioneine is an N‐α‐trimethyl‐2‐thiohistidine derivative that occurs in human, plant, fungal, and bacterial cells. Biosynthesis of this redox‐active betaine starts with trimethylation of the α‐amino group of histidine. The three consecutive methyl transfers are catalyzed by the S‐adenosylmethionine‐dependent methyltransferase EgtD. Three crystal structures of this enzyme in the absence and in the presence of N‐α‐dimethylhistidine and S‐adenosylhomocysteine implicate a preorganized array of hydrophilic interactions as the determinants for substrate specificity and apparent processivity. We identified two active site mutations that change the substrate specificity of EgtD 107‐fold and transform the histidine‐methyltransferase into a proficient tryptophan‐methyltransferase. Finally, a genomic search for EgtD homologues in fungal genomes revealed tyrosine and tryptophan trimethylation activity as a frequent trait in ascomycetous and basidomycetous fungi.  相似文献

Urocanic acid (UCA) is a major chromophore for ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the skin. On UV exposure, the naturally occurring trans-isomer converts to the cis-isomer in a dose-dependent manner. Accumulating evidence indicates that cis-UCA acts as an initiator of the UV-induced suppression of certain skin immune functions. This immunomodulation is recognized as an important factor in the development of skin cancer. In this study, pigmentation and UCA isomers were measured in 29 patients with previous basal cell carcinoma (BCC), 23 patients with previous cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM), and 32 healthy controls. Measurements were performed on UV-exposed (forehead, upper back) and UV non-exposed (buttock) skin. No significant differences in pigmentation percentage, total UCA concentration, relative (%) or absolute (nmol/cm2) cis-UCA concentration were observed between the groups in any of the body sites studied. The net production of cis-UCA after irradiation with a single test UV dose was evaluated. The relative production of cis-UCA following irradiation was significantly higher in both cancer groups when compared with the control group, while no significant difference was found between the BCC and the MM patients.  相似文献

The success of many complex scientific investigations hinges on bringing the capabilities of diverse individuals from multiple institutions together with state-of-the-art instrumentation. Computer scientists working with domain specialists have made progress on several fronts to create and integrate the tools required for Internet-based scientific collaboration. However, both technical and sociological challenges remain. The tools of computer-supported cooperative work are now being applied to such collaborations. Through immersive electronic interaction, team members distributed across a widespread area can collaborate, using the newest instruments and computing resources. Twenty-one patients with invasive cutaneous malignant melanoma and 19 patients with basal cell skin cancer and 29 healthy volunteers were phototested on non-UV exposed buttock skin to examine their 24 h reaction to a series of increasing doses of simulated sunlight with 25% dose increments. Skin pigmentation at the phototest sites was determined by skin reflectance before testing to assure an equal level of constitutive skin pigmentation in the 3 groups. Erythema reactions were scored visually 24 hours post-exposure and objective measurements of erythema were performed by skin reflectance and laser Doppler flowmetry. In adjacent non-irradiated skin the redness was also quantified to determine the increase in redness in irradiated skin compared to non-irradiated skin. Constitutional skin pigmentation correlated well to UV sensitivity (r = 0.75) and skin redness measured by skin reflectance technique correlated to laser Doppler flowmetry (r = 0.86). No significant differences in UV doses to barely perceptible erythema or to the higher erythema grades were found between the two skin tumour groups and the control group, and no significant differences were found in skin reflectance measured redness or in laser Doppler flowmetry of any erythema reactions between the 3 groups. The 24 h erythema reaction to sunlight can therefore not be used to distinguish patients with invasive cutaneous malignant melanoma or basal cell carcinoma from normal persons.  相似文献
