A review of colonoscopy in 200 patients

During the examination of the colon by fibre-optic colonoscopy in 200 consecutive patients it was possible to reach the caecum or suspected lesion in 80% of cases. Careful bowel preparation, sedation and detailed attention to techniques described are necessary for safe and successful performance of this procedure. In 85% of examinations, colonoscopy produced positive results including the definition of uncertain radiological lesions in 45 patients, finding of a cause for rectal bleeding not shown on barium studies in 15 patients, the assessment of inflammatory bowel disease in 28 patients, and the removal of polyps in 40 patients. Important was the finding of a normal colon in 49 cases, which obviated unnecessary surgery. Colonic perforation occurred in 2 patients. The limitations and complications of the procedure must be realised, but it is concluded that the colonoscope provides a valuable and effective means of diagnosis and therapy of lesions in the large bowel.     

Mechanisms of fracture in filled thermosetting resins

Fracture properties of a wide range of filled unsaturated polyester resin composites have been investigated with respect to filler size, shape, loading and adhesion to the matrix resin. Mechanisms are proposed for the fracture behaviors found, based on geometrical considerations of interacting filler particles and stress concentrations which result from them.     

Simplified method of eliminating the effect of nonlinearities on process crosscorrelations

A modified msequence is proposed to simplify the instrumentation in using the Gardiner method of identifying the linear channel of a nonlinear process. The class of sequence has properties suited to multivariate crosscorrelation.     

Use of a surface-acoustic-wave delay line to provide pseudocoherence in a clutter-reference pulse Doppler radar

A surface-acoustic-wave delay line has been used to provide a coherent reference signal in a small-pulse Doppler radar. Preliminary experiments using the device gave a 10?12 dB gain in Doppler signal when compared with a clutter reference system operating in a low-clutter environment. A simple theory is given which describes expected performance when using noncoherent detection.     

Metallurgical coke from substitute coals

The results of several attempts to develop processes for the utilization of high-volatile coking coals—with carbonaceous and noncarbonaceous additives and through continuous and controlled carbonization—and weakly and noncaking coals—both with and without binders—in the manufacture of metallurgical coke are discussed. The coke produced by these methods and with these raw materials are evaluated. A complete list of references is included.     

Silica content of dusts from five texas cottonseed oil mills

Total dust samples, collected with high-volume samplers, were ashed and then analyzed for aluminum, silicon and silica (SiO₂). Ash and aluminum contents agreed with earlier reported data, but the silicon content was lower. The amounts of silica ranged from 2–7% in dusts from the cleaning rooms to 0.01–0.05% in dusts from the baling rooms. Agreement with silica contents determined by infrared (IR) spectrometry was good. IR spectra indicated silica particle diameters were in the range of 6–8 µm in the cleaning rooms and 10 µm or more in the delintering and baling rooms. Threshold limit values (TLV) calculated on the basis of total silica in the high-volume samples suggest silica values above the limit in 4 of the cleaning rooms, and possibly one at the delintering rooms. Calculation of respirable silica concentrations and TLV for respirable silica was precluded by the sampling method.
