Analysis of color symbology from the perspective of cultural semiotics focused on Korean costume colors according to the cultural changes

The purpose of this study was to analyze the symbolization of colors as cultural codes, based on costume colors. In order to study the significance of colors in cultural changes, we carried out a quantitative analysis and interpreted it from the perspective of cultural semiotics. The range of this study was focused on Korean costume colors, over diverse diachronic stages of Korean culture. For this study 1535 color samples were collected, measured with a spectrophotometer, and analyzed quantitatively according their diachronic stages of origin. As a result, red, blue, and yellow were found to be the most frequently used colors during the Chosun Dynasty, a period based on Confucianism. These colors acted as cultural codes with cultural significance. During the Modern times pink, light blue, and black increased in frequency and represented the reception of western culture, the changing sex role of women in society, and utilitarianism. In these days, neutral colors and grayish tones of all colors are the most significant colors of high frequency. The use of such colors is closely related to industrialization, mechanization, functionalism, and the changes of women's sex roles in the societies. They are used as cultural codes, especially to emphasize a rational and masculine image rather than a feminine image. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Performance of asynchronous DS-CDMA using a maximal ratio combiningdiversity over a Rician fading channel

The final closed-form expression for bit error probability (BEP) is presented for a DS-CDMA system using a maximal ratio combining (MRC) diversity over a Rician fading channel. The accuracy of the BEP estimate evaluated by this expression is verified by comparison with a semi-analytic simulation result. The effect that diversity order has on the BEP is also considered for typical multipath delay profiles with different Rician ratios     

Analysis of the Sensitivity of Decision Analysis Results to Errors and Simplifications in Problem Structure: Application to Lake Erie Ecosystem Management

In practical decision analyses, the ldquocurse of dimensionalityrdquo compels one to make simplifying assumptions that can introduce errors into estimates of various indexes that interest decision-makers. These indexes include the expected performance of optimal and suboptimal strategies, the benefit of explicitly considering uncertainty, and the benefit of additional information. This paper quantifies the effects on these indexes of simplifying assumptions, including discretization of the decision space, omission of some decision variables and uncertainties from the decision tree, and disregarding of risk aversion. To reduce errors arising from discretization of the decision space, we use a multidimensional cubic spline to interpolate the performance of alternatives between a few simulated points. A case study analyzes decisions concerning phosphorus loading, fisheries management, and lower trophic research projects in Lake Erie under multiple criteria and ecological uncertainties. Results show that spline-based solutions often yield potentially superior decisions from those based on discretized decision spaces, but that omitting important uncertainties makes more of a difference in this case study's decisions and indexes than simplifying the decision space. On the other hand, incorrect multicriteria weights affect the case study's outcomes more than incorrect probabilities.     

Image flow segmentation and estimation using displaced spatial gradient

There are two main causes of inaccuracies in estimating image flows using gradient based techniques. One is the erroneous measurement of gradients in brightness and the other is the blurring of motion boundaries which is caused by the smoothness constraint. In the Letter, the gradient measurement error of conventional methods is analysed and a new technique based on this analysis proposed.<>     

Predicting protein diffusion coefficients

Diffusion coefficients for proteins in water are predicted. The numerical method developed is general enough to be applied to a wide range of protein surface shapes, from rodlike to globular. Results are presented for lysozyme and tobacco mosaic virus, and they are compared with actual data and with predictions made by less general methods.
