A Dual Selection Module for Directed Evolution of Genetic Circuits

We have developed a genetic selection module which enables us to select for positive and negative expression of a gene by controlling the expression of two antibiotic resistance genes. This module can be used to tune the performance of genetic circuits that yield simple ON/OFF gene expression outputs depending on the environment (input). We have demonstrated the utility of the module by selecting a genetic inverter from a 200 fold excess of nonfunctional inverters in two rounds.     

High Mobility and Luminescent Efficiency in Organic Single‐Crystal Light‐Emitting Transistors

A high‐performance ambipolar light‐emitting transistor (LET) that has high hole and electron mobilities and excellent luminescence characteristics is described. By using this device, a conspicuous light‐confined edge emission and current‐density‐dependent spectral evolution are observed. These findings will result in broader utilization of device potential and they provide a promising route for realizing electrically driven organic lasers.     

Performance analysis of shaft generator systems

A shaft generator system supplies electrical power required in a ship by using a part of the power produced by the main engine. Since the speed of the main engine can vary over a wide range, an externally commutated thyristor inverter, which has high reliability, is generally used to produce ac power with constant voltage and frequency. In this paper, a set of system equations, by which the total harmonic distortion of the output voltage, for example, can be estimated, is derived first. The effects of leading angle of the inverter and the reactance of ac reactor located in the output side of the inverter on the system performances and the operation limit of the system are then clarified. Moreover, a way of taking the system losses into account is proposed to obtain precise calculation results. Finally, the apparent power for the synchronous condenser to provide reactive power in the system is discussed. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electr Eng Jpn, 131(3): 70–79, 2000     

Large eddy simulation of swirling jet in a bluff-body burner

The large eddy simulation (LES) is applied to an unconfined swirling flow of an air surrounding a bluff-body having a central jet of air, and the complicated flowfield that involves the recirculation and vortex breakdown is investigated. The Smagorinsky model is used as the sub-grid scale model. The results of the present numerical simulation are compared with the experimental data of the mean and stochastic root mean square (RMS) variations of two velocity components. Although the inflow conditions are specified in a simple manner, the obtained numerical results are in reasonable agreement with the experiments, except for a part of RMS variation values near downstream of the bluff body. The present numerical calculations can successfully reproduce the two characteristics of the flow, i.e., an upstream recirculation zone established just downstream of the burner plane and the additional recirculation zone established at the more downstream location.     

Development of gap sensing system for narrow gap laser welding

Narrow gap welding with an oscillation laser beam is one of the effective processes for thick plate welding. To put this welding process into practical manufacturing, a groove-sensing system using image processing for narrow gap welding with an oscillation laser beam is used. This developed system uses still images of the weld zone taken by a coaxial CMOS camera. It can recognize the position of the groove wall by analysing the brightness distribution in the still image. It can then control the oscillation width and the laser-irradiated area by calculating the groove width and the groove centre position. Some narrow gap welding experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of the developed system. The results revealed that the developed system is effective for narrow gap welding with an oscillation laser beam. Using this system, the narrow gap groove can be welded even if the groove width has changed during the welding process.     

东京奥运会前后有关公园绿地功能的讨论与收获

以“绿色奥运“为口号的北京市,正在着手2008年奥运会的各种建设。在这种大规模建设中,如何将“绿色”要素,贯穿于空间及设施中,这些设施建成后,将对北京市的公园绿地系统产生何种影响,是景观园林专家们所关注的焦点。通过东京奥运会前后日本国内对公园绿地功能的反复讨论及当时的资料介绍,阐述其对现阶段城市公园绿地形成的重要价值,以期为当前的绿地规划及各项决策提供参考。研究结果明确提出了“公园绿地功能”与“运动”相互关系的总体构架,并提出建造绿地空间时应注意的重点。     

Highly Flexible MoS(2) Thin-Film Transistors with Ion Gel Dielectrics

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS(2)) thin-film transistors were fabricated with ion gel gate dielectrics. These thin-film transistors exhibited excellent band transport with a low threshold voltage (<1 V), high mobility (12.5 cm(2)/(V·s)) and a high on/off current ratio (10(5)). Furthermore, the MoS(2) transistors exhibited remarkably high mechanical flexibility, and no degradation in the electrical characteristics was observed when they were significantly bent to a curvature radius of 0.75 mm. The superior electrical performance and excellent pliability of MoS(2) films make them suitable for use in large-area flexible electronics.
