Nomadic users of streamed multimedia content in mobile networks are often faced with resource-constrained network paths that suffer from low bandwidth. Streaming high-quality video in such a challenging scenario demands a set of highly adaptive schemes, which have not been sufficiently explored in particular for the emerging H.264 Scalable Video Coding (H.264/SVC) standard. In this paper, we empirically investigate the performance of streaming H.264/SVC scalable video streams to users in multihomed mobile networks containing multiple available transmission paths. Previous work has demonstrated the feasibility of aggregating bandwidth of multiple paths to deliver video streams when no single, sufficiently high bandwidth path is available. We focus on evaluating the enhanced performance of multipath bandwidth-aggregation streaming by exploiting a quality-layers based, H.264/SVC-specific packet prioritisation scheme for quality-aware multipath packet scheduling and selective packet dropping in case of bandwidth shortage even after aggregation. Additionally, we explore a base-layer rate control scheme for H.264/SVC delivery in ultra-low bandwidth environments. Through extensive experimentation on a realistic hardware-based testbed, we obtain a comprehensive and insightful understanding of the behaviour of H.264/SVC streams when transmitted across multiple paths in mobile networks. We quantify the improvements offered by the use of H.264/SVC-specific packet prioritisation schemes compared with an existing generic scalable video prioritisation scheme, and the benefits by the use of base-layer rate control in ultra-low bandwidth situations. The performance of the multipath streaming schemes is further compared with that of an ideal single high bandwidth path. We also identify the remaining challenges that must be overcome if such streaming schemes are to offer performance close to that of the ideal single high bandwidth path. 相似文献

The benefit of using the geometry image to represent an arbitrary 3D mesh is that the 3D mesh can be re-sampled as a completely regular structure and coded efficiently by common image compression methods. For geometry image-based 3D mesh compression, we need to code the normal-map images while coding geometry images to improve the subjective quality and realistic effects of the reconstructed model. In traditional methods, a geometry image and a normal-map image are coded independently. However a strong correlation exists between these two kinds of images, because both of them are generated from the same 3D mesh and share the same parameterization. In this paper we propose a predictive coding framework, in which the normal-map image is predicted based on the geometric correlation between them. Additionally we utilize the strong geometric correlation among three components of normal-map image to improve the predicting accuracy. The experimental results show the proposed coding framework improves the coding efficiency of normal-map image, meanwhile the realistic effect of a 3D mesh is significantly enhanced. 相似文献

We propose and study a new type of location optimization problem, the min-dist location selection problem: given a set of clients and a set of existing facilities, we select a location from a given set of potential locations for establishing a new facility, so that the average distance between a client and her nearest facility is minimized. The problem has a wide range of applications in urban development simulation, massively multiplayer online games, and decision support systems. We also investigate a variant of the problem, where we consider replacing (instead of adding) a facility while achieving the same optimization goal. We call this variant the min-dist facility replacement problem. We explore two common approaches to location optimization problems and present methods based on those approaches for solving the min-dist location selection problem. However, those methods either need to maintain an extra index or fall short in efficiency. To address their drawbacks, we propose a novel method (named MND), which has very close performance to the fastest method but does not need an extra index. We then utilize the key idea behind MND to approach the min-dist facility replacement problem, which results in two algorithms names MSND and RID. We provide a detailed comparative cost analysis and conduct extensive experiments on the various algorithms. Lane-changing behavior plays an important role in characterizing urban arterial road traffic dynamics. This paper investigates efficiency-driven and objective-driven motives for drivers to change lanes on arterial roads. The former motive is determined by the circumstances of the surrounding traffic flow, whereas the latter depends on position. A location-dependent lane changing model is then established by weighing the two motives for lane changing. Both continuous and discrete versions of the arterial traffic model are obtained using the LWR (Lighthill–Whitham–Richards) model with the two types of lane changing. Simulations show that the proposed model can reproduce macroscopic traffic phenomena such as spillover and a decrease in the concomitant departure flow, which is the reason for capacity loss. It is concluded that 1) there exists a critical condition under which there is no capacity loss and that 2) a different flow composition could result in a different capacity loss, which varies according to the flow direction.
