A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a promising alternative source of clean power for automotive applications, but its acceptance in such applications depends on reducing its costs and increasing its power density to achieve greater compactness. To meet these requirements, further improvements in cell performance are required. In particular, when the fuel cell is operating at high current density, the transport of water through the membrane has considerable impacts on the performance because of the large concentration gradient of water between the cathode and anode. Through-plane water permeation across the membrane is therefore a fundamental process in operational PEMFCs. Recently, resistance to water transport at the membrane-gas interface has been reported, and this is affected by the temperature and relative humidity. We investigated the distribution of water inside a proton exchange membrane during a water permeation test by using confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy with a fine spatial resolution (2-3 μm). In the presence of a water flux, the local water content is not necessarily in equilibrium with the water activity in the gas phase. Interfacial water-transport resistance due to the presence of a non-equilibrium membrane structure at the interface cannot be neglected. 相似文献

A simple and mild synthetic route via a hydrothermal treatment of Mg2TiO4 has been developed to prepare brookite-type TiO2. The hydrothermal conversion of Mg2TiO4 to brookite proceeded in 1 M HCl solution even at 100 °C. The converted brookite grains were composed of the angular particles covered on the textured surface, leaving the original morphology of Mg2TiO4 grains. Compared with the commercially available TiO2 catalysts (rutile, anatase, and P25), the brookite obtained in this study showed a good photocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under a simulated sunlight irradiation. 相似文献

Self-enhancing and self-improving motivations were investigated across cultures. Replicating past research, North Americans who failed on a task persisted less on a follow-up task than those who succeeded. In contrast, Japanese who failed persisted more than those who succeeded. The Japanese pattern is evidence for a self-improving orientation: Failures highlight where corrective efforts are needed. Japanese who failed also enhanced the importance and the diagnosticity of the task compared with those who succeeded, whereas North Americans did the opposite. Study 2 revealed that self-improving motivations are specific to the tasks on which one receives feedback. Study 3 unpackaged the cultural differences by demonstrating that they are due, at least in part, to divergent lay theories regarding the utility of effort. The levels of 90Sr and 137Cs in human placenta, fetus and diet were determined by radiochemical methods during the period from March 1966 to December 1968. The possible effects of these radionuclides on the pregnant woman and the fetus were discussed. The metabolic characteristics of both 90Sr and 137Cs were also discussed on the basis of estimates of discrimination factors and observed ratios of these radionuclides. As a result of the analyses, the dose rate to the human placenta resulting from deposition of 90Sr in the organ was estimated at about 0.003 mrem/month and that of 137Cs at about 0.013 mrem/month. The dose rate to the total body resulting from the body burden of these radionuclides in the mother was estimated at about 0.012 mrem/ month. These values are much smaller than the monthly dose from 40K normally existing in the body. It was rather difficult to draw definitive conclusions concerning the possible correlation between the 90Sr fallout and the annual changes of infant mortality rates in Japan. 相似文献

In the light of the serious economic crisis of 1997 and Agenda 21, as proposed in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, the Thai government has increased commitments to sustainable agricultural development. This paper examines how local Thai farmers are interacting with the policy imperatives of sustainable agriculture, focusing on the adoption of sustainable practices and farmer livelihoods. Two pummelo producing communities in Chaiyaphum province, Northeast Thailand were chosen as examples and compared: one, located in the highlands, focused on sales for local and domestic markets and the other, located in the lowlands, included sales for export. Both were involved in the implementation of Q-GAP, a public policy for good agricultural practices. The pummelo producers discursively sought the best combination of conventional and sustainable farming practices by balancing the benefits and risks concerning labour requirements, commercial results, financial risks associated with credit loans and investment and ecological sustainability. 相似文献

Combination of theoretical biphasic analyses and corresponding experimental measurements for articular cartilage has successfully revealed the fundamental material properties and time-depending mechanical behaviors of articular cartilage containing plenty of water. The insight of load partitioning between solid and fluid phases advanced the prediction of the frictional behavior of articular cartilage. One of the recent concerns about biphasic finite element (FE) analysis seems to be a dynamic and physiological condition in terms of mechanical functionality as a load-bearing for articular joint system beyond material testing, which has mainly focused on time-dependent reaction force and deformation in relatively small and low speed compression. Recently, the biphasic FE model for reciprocating sliding motion was applied to confirm the frictional effect on the migrating contact area. The results indicated that the model of a cylindrical indenter sliding over the cartilage surface remarkably sustained the higher proportion of fluid load support than a condition without migrating contact area, but the effectiveness of constitutive material properties has not been sufficiently evaluated for sliding motion. In our present study, at the first stage, the compressive response of the articular cartilage was examined by high precision testing machine. Material properties for the biphasic FE model, which included inhomogeneous apparent Young's modulus of solid phase along depth, strain-dependent permeability and collagen reinforcement in tensile strain, were estimated in cylindrical indentation tests by the curve fitting between the experimental time-dependent behavior and FE model simulation. Then, the biphasic lubrication mechanism of the articular cartilage including migrating contact area was simulated to elucidate functionality as a load-bearing material. The results showed that the compaction effect on permeability of solid phase was functional particularly in the condition without the migrating contact area, whereas in sliding condition the compaction effect did not clearly show its role in terms of the proportion of fluid load support. The reinforcement of solid phase, which represented the collagen network in the tissue, improved the proportion of fluid load support especially in the sliding condition. Thus, a functional integration of constitutive mechanical properties as a load-bearing was evaluated by FE model simulation in this study. 相似文献

A modified pulse-heating method is proposed to improve the accuracy of measurement of the hemispherical total emissivity, specific heat capacity, and electrical resistivity of electrically conductive materials at high temperatures. The proposed method is based on the analysis of a series of rapid resistive self-heating experiments on a sample heated at different temperature rates. The method is used to measure the three properties of the IG-110 grade of isotropic graphite at temperatures from 850 to 1800 K. The problem of the extrinsic heating-rate effect, which reduces the accuracy of the measurements, is successfully mitigated by compensating for the generally neglected experimental error associated with the electrical measurands (current and voltage). The results obtained by the proposed method can be validated by the linearity of measured quantities used in the property determinations. The results are in reasonably good agreement with previously published data, which demonstrate the suitability of the proposed method, in particular, to the resistivity and total emissivity measurements. An interesting result is the existence of a minimum in the emissivity of the isotropic graphite at around 1120 K, consistent with the electrical resistivity results. 相似文献

A mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth present in conjunction to normal dentition. A mesiodens may commonly occur in the central region of the upper or lower jaw. A mesiodens is different from normal teeth in terms of structure and shape. The aim of this study is to evaluate the micro‐ and nanoscale structural properties of mesiodens dentin by combined small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Five freshly extracted, noncarious mesiodens and five normal dentin disks prepared from human incisor teeth were compared. Using FTIR, the phosphate‐to‐amide I, carbonate‐to‐phosphate, and carbonate‐to‐amide I band area ratios and the crystallinity index were quantified. SAXS/WAXS were used to study the nanostructure of mesiodens. An increase in the mineral content in the mesiodens dentin with respect to the normal group was found. Crystallinity was also significantly increased and the protein content decreased in the mesiodens dentin compared with that of normal dentin. SAXS/WAXS results revealed that mesiodens dentin has a more calcified tissue. Further, SAXS analysis revealed a nonuniform distribution of dentin fibrils in mesiodens. Microsc. Res. The design and performance of a new high-pressure and high-temperature cell for measurement of x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra of solid catalysts working in a flowing liquid are presented. The cell has flat, high-purity sintered cubic boron nitride (c-BN) windows which can tolerate high temperature (900 K) and high pressure (10 MPa). The c-BN is a new material which has the highest tensile strength, second only to diamond, and is also chemically and thermally stable. The use of the cell is demonstrated for measurements of PtPdAl(2)O(3) and Ni(2)PSiO(2) hydrodesulfurization catalysts at reaction conditions. A technique called delta chi (Deltachi), involving determining the difference between XAFS spectra of the sample at reaction conditions and the bare sample, is introduced. 相似文献

Coalbed fires are uncontrolled subsurface fires that occur around the world. These fires are believed to be significant contributors to annual CO2 emissions. Although many of these fires have been burning for decades, researchers have only recently begun to investigate physical mechanisms that control fire behavior. One aspect of fire behavior that is poorly characterized is the relationship between subsurface combustion and surface fissures. At the surface above many fires, long, wide fissures are observed. At a coalbed fire near Durango, Colorado, these fissures form systematic orthogonal patterns that align with regional joints in the Upper Cretaceous Fruitland Formation. Understanding the mechanisms that form these fissures is important, as the fissures are believed to play vital roles in sustaining the combustion in the subsurface. In some of the coalbed fire simulation models available today, these fissures are treated as fixed boundary conditions. We argue, using data collected, field observations and simulation result, that there exists a relationship between the location and magnitude of subsidence caused by the fire and the opening of fissures. The results presented suggest that fissures are believed to open when subsurface subsidence gives rise to tensile stresses around pre-existing joints. 相似文献
