Efficient holographic recording in novel azo-containing polymer

We report on periodic structures inscribed through holographic recording by both intensity light patterns and polarization patterns in novel azo-containing polymer poly[oxyethylene({6-[4-(biphenyl-4-azo)phenoxy]hexyl}imino) ethylene-carbonylimino(2-methyl-1,3-phenylene)iminocarbonyl] abbreviated as A-TDI. The kinetic of grating recording and diffraction efficiency of recorded gratings using polarized cw Ar⁺ laser light have been measured for s–s, p–p and s–p polarization configurations. The translation grating technique applied during the light self-diffraction process allowed for investigations of phase and amplitude gratings contributions to light diffraction in the studied polymer. Full reversibility of polarization (s–p) grating recording and observation of a half-period structure development during optical erasure process makes this material a good candidate for further studies as a potential material for dynamic holography purposes.     

Unexpected arsenic compounds in low-rank coals

Nine low-rank coal samples from three different coal basins (Velenje and Trbovlje basins, Slovenia, and Sokolov basin, Czech Republic) were analyzed for their elemental composition and the presence of arsenic compounds. Total arsenic concentrations in the samples were 1.59-5.77 microg g(-1) with one exception, 142 microg g(-1) for a sample from the Sokolov basin. A methanol/water mixture (1:1) extracted 15.1 - 38.7% of the total arsenic from Velenje basin samples but only 2.2-7.1% from Sokolov and Trbovlje basin samples. Extracts from the Velenje basin samples contained mainly the tetramethylarsonium ion (0.14 - 0.92 microg g(-1)) with considerable amounts of arsenate (0.15 - 0.85 microg g(-1)) and monomethyl arsonic acid 0.04 - 0.27 microg g(-1)). In methanol/water extracts from samples from the Sokolov and Trbovlje basins inorganic arsenic (arsenate) prevailed (0.26 - 37.1 microg g(-1)), but at least trace amounts of organic arsenic compounds were found as well. It is likely that biogeochemical degradation of organic material is related to the unexpected organoarsenic compounds found in low-rank coals. However, it should also not be ruled out that abiogenic synthesis could have taken place in the carbon-rich environment under the harsh conditions present (elevated temperature and pressure).     

Microwave‐synthesized magnetic chitosan microparticles for the immobilization of yeast cells

An extremely simple procedure has been developed for the immobilization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells on magnetic chitosan microparticles. The magnetic carrier was prepared using an inexpensive, simple, rapid, one‐pot process, based on the microwave irradiation of chitosan and ferrous sulphate at high pH. Immobilized yeast cells have been used for sucrose hydrolysis, hydrogen peroxide decomposition and the adsorption of selected dyes. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Water-swellable rubbers containing powdery poly(acrylamide) hydrogel

Hydrophilic composite materials were prepared by combining powdery poly(acrylamide) hydrogel with various technical rubbers (natural rubber, chlorobutyl rubber, EPDM rubber). The dependence of the quality of the dispersions of powdery hydrogel in rubbers on the method of dispersion was studied and properties (swelling capacity in water, mechanical characteristics) of the composites were measured. The natural rubber/hydrogel composites showed the best swellability (>80 vol.-%). The mechanical properties of the composites are comparable to those of the unmodified rubbers, both in the dry and water-swollen state.     

Detection of aberrant behaviour in home environments from video sequence

We introduce an application for the detection of aberrant behaviour within home based environments, with a focus on repetitive actions, which may be present in instance of persons suffering from dementia. Video based analysis has been used to detect the motion of a person within a given scene in addition to tracking them over the time. Detection of repetitive actions has been based on the analysis of a person’s trajectory using the principles of signal correlation. Along with the ability to detect repetitive motion the developed approach also has the ability to measure the amount of activity/inactivity within the scene during a given period of time. Our results showed that the developed approach had the ability to detect all patterns in the data set examined with an average accuracy of 96.67%. This work has therefore validated the proposed concept of video based analysis for the detection of repetitive activities.     

Pseudocomplemented lattice effect algebras and existence of states

We prove that in every pseudocomplemented atomic lattice effect algebra the subset of all pseudocomplements is a Boolean algebra including the set of sharp elements as a subalgebra. As an application, we show families of effect algebras for which the existence of a pseudocomplementation implies the existence of states. These states can be obtained by smearing of states existing on the Boolean algebra of sharp elements.
