Direct observation of maternal sensitivity and dyadic interactions in the home: Relations to maternal thinking.

This study assessed whether 3 forms of maternal views (recall of her own parental acceptance, the sense of self, and perceptions of the child) are related to each other and to mother–child interaction. The Mother–Father–Peer Scale was sent to mothers of infants aged 11–19 mo; 37 mothers were selected as extremes on the basis of the Acceptance subscale. Ss were observed in their homes using Ainsworth-type observations. The Maternal Sensitivity Scale, Dyadic Physical Avoidance Scale, and Dyadic Harmony Classification by M. D. Ainsworth et al (1978) were used. Mothers were sent questionnaires assessing the sense of self and perceptions of the child. There was 84% concordant classification between recall of parental acceptance and the observationally assessed dyadic harmony classification. Furthermore, mothers' recall of parental acceptance, perception of infant responsiveness, covert anxiety, and the observational measures showed intriguing relationships with each other. Template-Directed Incorporation of Functional Molecules into DNA

We report a versatile method for the incorporation of functional molecules into oligonucleotides carrying reactive groups by using a template-directed postsynthetic approach in the solution phase. For this purpose, we prepared oligonucleotides carrying an amino group on the backbone by using an acylic threoninol scaffold. The resulting oligonucleotides could be used to introduce almost any molecule carrying aldehyde, which can be, among other things, a metal-binding ligand or a fluorophore. In our study, we incorporated aldehyde-bearing phenanthroline, a metal-binding ligand, into oligonucleotides by template-directed reversible conjugation. We observed that the use of an abasic sugar site instead of a natural nucleobase in the template strand increased the yield of conjugation and induced selective incorporation of the phenanthroline. This method could lead progress in the development of probes for the recognition of abasic regions in duplex DNA. Moreover, template-directed formation of metal ligand-oligonucleotide conjugates might have potential applications in hybrid biocatalysis for enantioselective transformations.     

A mass spectrometry method for quantitative and kinetic analysis of gas release from nuclear materials and its application to helium desorption from UO2 and fission gas release from irradiated fuel

A new system has been developed to determine absolute quantities of gas (mainly noble gases) released during thermal desorption in the range from 10^?12 to 10^?5 mol with a precision of few percent. The system is actually designed for simultaneous measurement of gaseous elements like He, Xe, Kr, thermally released from nuclear fuel samples and also allows the determination of the release kinetics as a function of time. This system, called Quantitative GAs MEasurement System (Q-GAMES), is based on the principle of collecting, purifying and spiking the sample gas in a “high-pressure” chamber, and continuous sampling of the gas for mass spectrometric analysis without sample depletion during the experiment. It is equipped with its own spike generator and with different gas purification systems. It is shown that this system fulfills the requirement to work with two existing very high-temperature gas desorption facilities for nuclear materials. This paper describes the Q-GAMES principle, the spiking system, its calibration, its operative mode, the different quantification techniques, as well as its technical data, in combination with some examples of typical application.

Influence of the suspension media on the thermal treatment of mesophilic lactococcal bacteriophages

The thermal resistances of the Lactococcus lactis phages P008 (a heat-sensitive wide-spread phage) and P680 (a heat-resistant phage) suspended in milk and in solutions supplemented with milk components were studied to elucidate the protective role of milk on phage inactivation. For both phages a decrease of inactivation was observed in casein solution. Furthermore, the inactivation kinetics of the phages in whey, in whey cream (3.5%, 20%, 30% fat) and in whey protein concentrate (0.7%, 5%, 10% protein) were tested. The inactivation experiments in whey cream and in whey protein concentrate having different concentrations of fat and protein revealed that fat had no influence on the inactivation, while, in contrast, the presence of protein had a protective effect.
