In-situ production of sodium hypochlorite is one of the oldest electrochemical processes of the chemical industry. During the past twenty years a new “in-situ” hypochlorite industry has developed. Construction and performance of present-day cells are considered in detail. Modern cells are fed with seawater or similar weak brines and yield solutions suitable for disinfection, e. g. in breweries, laundries, etc., or for treatment of municipal sewage. Particular importance attaches to units for chlorination of cooling water for power stations or on board ships, thus hindering growth of organisms leading to operating failures. Patients with the complex congenital heart disease (CHD) are usually associated with right ventricular outflow tract dysfunction and typically require multiple surgical interventions during their lives to relieve the right ventricular outflow tract abnormality. Transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement was used as a non-surgical, less invasive alternative treatment for right ventricular outflow tract dysfunction and has been rapidly developing over the past years. Despite the current favorable results of transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement, many patients eligible for pulmonary valve replacement are still not candidates for transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement. Therefore, one of the significant future challenges is to expand transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement to a broader patient population. This review describes the limitations and problems of existing techniques and focuses on decellularized tissue engineering for pulmonary valve stenting.  相似文献

Avian influenza viruses threaten the life of domestic terrestrial poultry and contaminate poultry meat and eggs. Recently, these viruses rarely infected humans but had a high mortality rate in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Egypt. Thereby, these viruses caused high economic costs for production of poultry and health protection. We inactivated a highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus of subtype H7N7 in cell culture medium and chicken meat by heat and high hydrostatic pressure. Because heat and pressure inactivation curves of the H7N7 virus showed deviations from first-order kinetics, a reaction order of 1.1 had to be selected. A mathematical inactivation model has been developed that is valid between 10 and 60 degrees C and up to 500 MPa, allowing the prediction of the reduction in virus titer in response to pressure, temperature, and treatment time. Incubation at 63 degrees C for 2 min and 500 MPa at 15 degrees C for 15 s inactivated more than 10(5) PFU/ml, respectively. Thus, we suggest high-pressure treatment of poultry and its products to avoid the possible health threat by highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses.  相似文献

In Part I, a new theory for impact ionization that utilizes history-dependent ionization coefficients to account for the nonlocal nature of the ionization process has been described. In this paper, we will review this theory and extend it with the assumptions that are implicitly used in both the local-field theory in which the ionization coefficients are functions only of the local electric field and the new one. A systematic study of the noise characteristics of GaAs homojunction avalanche photodiodes with different multiplication layer thicknesses is also presented. It is demonstrated that there is a definite “size effect” for thin multiplication regions that is not well characterized by the local-field model. The new theory, on the other hand, provides very good fits to the measured gain and noise. The new ionization coefficient model has also been validated by Monte Carlo simulations  相似文献

A brief history of the origin of patenting is given. A 1421 Florentine patent to Brunelleschi is believed to be the earliest invention granted such protection. Various rulers then granted patents for operation in their territories. The first organized approach to patenting was set up in London in the seventeenth century, and this was later systematized by Bennet Woodcroft. Some examples are given of early patents claiming applications for gold technology in areas such as cladding, electroplating and weaving gold wire.  相似文献

In this account the concept of using formic acid as a hydrogen storage material is presented. Catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide and heterogeneously catalyzed decomposition of formic acid to hydrogen and carbon dioxide are briefly discussed. In two series of small‐molecule ligands, one inhibiting human cathepsin L (hcatL) and the other MEK1 kinase, biological affinities were found to strongly increase when an aryl ring of the inhibitors is substituted with the larger halogens Cl, Br, and I, but to decrease upon F substitution. X‐ray co‐crystal structure analyses revealed that the higher halides engage in halogen bonding (XB) with a backbone C?O in the S3 pocket of hcatL and in a back pocket of MEK1. While the S3 pocket is located at the surface of the enzyme, which provides a polar environment, the back pocket in MEK1 is deeply buried in the protein and is of pronounced apolar character. This study analyzes environmental effects on XB in protein–ligand complexes. It is hypothesized that energetic gains by XB are predominantly not due to water replacements but originate from direct interactions between the XB donor (Caryl? X) and the XB acceptor (C?O) in the correct geometry. New X‐ray co‐crystal structures in the same crystal form (space group P212121) were obtained for aryl chloride, bromide, and iodide ligands bound to hcatL. These high‐resolution structures reveal that the backbone C?O group of Gly61 in most hcatL co‐crystal structures maintains water solvation while engaging in XB. An aryl? CF3‐substituted ligand of hcatL with an unexpectedly high affinity was found to adopt the same binding geometry as the aryl halides, with the CF3 group pointing to the C?O group of Gly61 in the S3 pocket. In this case, a repulsive F2C? F???O?C contact apparently is energetically overcompensated by other favorable protein–ligand contacts established by the CF3 group.  相似文献

Alzheimer's disease and other Tauopathies are associated with neurofibrillary tangles composed of Tau protein, as well as toxic Tau oligomers. Therefore, inhibitors of pathological Tau aggregation are potentially useful candidates for future therapies targeting Tauopathies. Two hexapeptides within Tau, designated PHF6* (275-VQIINK-280) and PHF6 (306-VQIVYK-311), are known to promote Tau aggregation. Recently, the PHF6* segment has been described as the more potent driver of Tau aggregation. We therefore employed mirror-image phage display with a large peptide library to identify PHF6* fibril binding peptides consisting of D-enantiomeric amino acids. The suitability of D-enantiomeric peptides for in vivo applications, which are protease stable and less immunogenic than L-peptides, has already been demonstrated. The identified D-enantiomeric peptide MMD3 and its retro-inverso form, designated MMD3rev, inhibited in vitro fibrillization of the PHF6* peptide, the repeat domain of Tau as well as full-length Tau. Dynamic light scattering, pelleting assays and atomic force microscopy demonstrated that MMD3 prevents the formation of tau β-sheet-rich fibrils by diverting Tau into large amorphous aggregates. NMR data suggest that the D-enantiomeric peptides bound to Tau monomers with rather low affinity, but ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) data demonstrated binding to PHF6* and full length Tau fibrils. In addition, molecular insight into the binding mode of MMD3 to PHF6* fibrils were gained by in silico modelling. The identified PHF6*-targeting peptides were able to penetrate cells. The study establishes PHF6* fibril binding peptides consisting of D-enantiomeric amino acids as potential molecules for therapeutic and diagnostic applications in AD research.  相似文献
