Design issues such as optical transmission, interference mechanisms, the splitting ratio, the polarization dependence, and the fabrication tolerances of a compact parabolically tapered multimode-interference (MMI)-based 3-dB power splitter on an InP-based deeply etched ridge waveguide, by use of the finite-element-based beam-propagation method, are presented. The benefits and drawbacks of the use of the tapered structure, in comparison with an untapered MMI-based 3-dB splitter, have also been investigated.  相似文献

Space-use was examined in 54 female polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from Svalbard and the Barents Sea that were collared with satellite transmitters to provide information on their spatial positions and annual home range sizes. Plasma samples from the same animals were analyzed for concentrations of six relevant PCB congeners (PCB-99, -153, -156, -180, -194, and -118). Factors related to space-use strategy (such as home range size; annual, spring, and winter longitudinal position; and spring and summer latitudinal position) were important determinants of PCB concentrations in plasma. In addition, reproductive status of the polar bears and plasma lipid content affected PCB concentrations. Among the tested variables, annual home range size was the variable that affected sigmaPCB5 (sum of PCB-99, -153, -156, -180, and -194) to the largest degree (r2 = 0.22). We propose that the positive effect of home range size on sigmaPCB5 in female polar bears is related to the higher energetic costs required to occupy large home range sizes as compared to small home range sizes. Polar bears with large home range sizes would need to consume more prey than bears with small home range sizes, and increased feeding without a change in elimination of persistent compounds can explain their higher sigmaPCB5 concentrations. Polar bears with large home range sizes were also more pelagic, inhabiting areas further east, closer to the ice-edge zone than animals with small home range sizes. Thus, prey choice associated with a pelagic space-use strategy may also explain the higher sigmaPCB5 in polar bears with large home range sizes.  相似文献

The occurrence of n-alkanoic acids, amides, and nitriles in samples of aerosol particulate matter from Kuala Lumpur and Santiago suggests that emissions from cooking and biomass burning are the primary sources of these organic markers in the atmosphere. It is proposed that fatty acids react with ammonia during biomass burning or combustion to produce amides and nitriles, which can be applied as useful biomarker tracers. To test this hypothesis, nonadecanoic acid and hexadecanamide were used as reactants in hydrous pyrolysis experiments. These experiments produced amides and nitriles and indicated that ammonia is an essential agent in their formation. Thus amides and nitriles are of utility as indicators for input from combustion and biomass burning in the ambient atmosphere.  相似文献

CoAPO-5 molecular sieves have been synthesized with glycerol and water as solvent in order to maximize the degree of isomorphous substitution of Co2+ ions in the AFI framework. These CoAPO-5 molecular sieves have been characterized with X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe microanalysis, N2 sorption, and UV-visible-NIR-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy techniques. Optimum conditions for the synthesis of Co-rich single-phase and highly crystalline CoAPO-5 molecular sieves were obtained by varying the [Co]:[Al] ratio in the synthesis gel and the synthesis time. It will be shown that highly crystalline hexagonal single-phase CoAPO-5 crystals with a size between 3 and 10 microns and a substitution degree of about 13% can be obtained from a 0.7CoO.0.65Al2O3.1P2O5.1(C2H5)3N.40HOCH2CHOHCH2OH gel at 190 degrees C after 14 days of synthesis. This substitution degree is substantially higher than that for CoAPO-5 materials synthesized in the presence of water (i.e., about 7.5%).  相似文献

The current popularity of backpack-type load carriage systems (LCS) by students has precipitated a prevalence of postural abnormalities and pain. This study compared subjective perceptual comfort in standard and vertically loaded LCSs. Sixteen females ages 18-23 years rated their personal LCSs for perceived shoulder, neck, and lower back comfort and for overall comfort, each day for two weeks using 100 mm visual analogue scales (VAS). Each scale contained polar extremities of 'very comfortable' to 'very uncomfortable' and a vertical mark placed on the 100 mm line by the participants indicated their perception of comfort. Following two weeks, participants were given LCSs that distributed the weight vertically and were asked to rate the system in the same way for an additional two-week period. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in shoulder (p=0.015), neck (p=0.005), and lower back (p=0.036) comfort and overall comfort (p=0.001) between the participants' personal LCSs and the experimental LCS. In conclusion, vertical load placement may redistribute the load in a manner that reduces symptoms of selected anatomical discomfort.  相似文献

Potassium is an essential element for human metabolism. It is present in all living cells, predominantly in the skeletal muscle tissue. The energy of the 40K photon and its uniform distribution within the human body allow its in vivo measurement. Subjects of both sexes were monitored at the whole-body counter of the IRD facility for the evaluation of 40K body burden, being divided into two groups: (1) subjects who do not exercise routinely, and (2) subjects who do exercise routinely. The average values found for potassium mass and potassium concentration in group 1 were 99 +/- 17 g of K and 1.3 +/- 0.2 g of K kg(-1) of body mass, respectively, and in group 2 the average values found for potassium mass and potassium concentration were 118 +/- 33 g of K and 1.6 +/- 0.2 g of K kg(-1) of body mass, respectively. The comparison between average values for potassium mass and concentration shows a significant statistical difference.  相似文献

Phocid seals have lipid rich milk, which is known to serve as a transfer medium through which persistent organic pollutants (POPs) move from mother to offspring during lactation. However, knowledge on this generational transfer of different POPs and the partitioning of these compounds in maternal and offspring tissues over the course of the lactation are limited. In this study we examined the qualitative and quantitative partitioning of a range of chlorinated POPs in maternal blubber, blood and milk as well as in pup blubber, collected early in the lactation period and late in the lactation period. In the lactating female, the high-chlorinated and hydrophobic compounds were passed less efficiently into the milk than the low-chlorinated compounds and more water-soluble compounds. Significantly, lower maternal blood concentrations than in maternal blubber biopsies suggest a stratification of POP concentrations in the blubber column of lactating female and lower concentrations in the metabolic active inner layers. Over the course of lactation, there was a significant increase in maternal blood and milk concentrations of POPs as opposed to no change in maternal blubber biopsy concentrations. This was most apparent for the hydrophobic and high-chlorinated compounds. The most likely explanation for this is that the metabolic active inner blubber layer, from which the milk lipids are derived from, is in steady state with the circulatory system, while the outer layers are more static and only slowly respond to changes in concentrations elsewhere in the body. The concentrations of the high-chlorinated and hydrophobic compounds were substantially lower in pup blubber than in maternal blubber. This probably relates the combined effect of these compounds stratification in maternal blubber and their slow transfer into the milk. The present study shows that the more hydrophobic and high-chlorinated compounds come to steady state less quickly in the different tissues than the more water-soluble and low-chlorinated compounds in the lactating female and her offspring. This has implications for which matrices to choose when sampling for assessing the toxicological risk of POPs in seals.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetic and mean time tissue distribution parameters, after a single 50-mg/kg dose of quercetin administered as intravenous bolus, oral solution, and oral suspension, were determined using rat as an animal model. Following intravenous administration, the elimination rate constant and the elimination half-life were found to be 0.0062 min-1 and 111 min, respectively. Examining the mean time tissue distribution parameters reflected a strong binding affinity of the drug molecules to both plasma and tissue proteins. In addition, the low permeability rate of drug molecules in the peripheral system was demonstrated. Following the oral administration of the drug, the extent of absorption was greater from solution than from suspension. Moreover, the solution showed a shorter Tmax and a higher Cmax than suspension. The absolute bioavailability for the solution was 0.275 and that for suspension was 0.162. The mean residence time (MRT) and the mean absorption time (MAT) were higher for suspension, reflecting the need for dissolving the drug in order to be absorbed. The mean (in-vivo) dissolution time (MDTin-vivo) was 34.5 min. Thus, an oral quercetin formulation that can readily form a drug solution in the gastrointestinal tract may enhance the absorption of the drug.  相似文献

IRMM-443 re-groups a set of six European Reference Soils (EUROSOILS), which had been certified for their adsorption coefficients for atrazine, 2,4-D and lindane (Certification of the European Reference Soil Set (IRMM-443-EUROSOILS)-Part I. Adsorption coefficients for atrazine, 2,4-D and lindane. Sci Total Environ, in press). The certification of these parameters was complemented by an additional certification of pH in suspension as well by the determination of indicative values for total nitrogen, organic and total carbon content. While Part I explained the principles of the value assignment process and discussed their application to the adsorption coefficients, Part II presents the certified values for pH as well as the indicative values for N(tot), C(tot) and C(org). In addition, the assessment of uncertainty components for stability and homogeneity, which have been included in the final uncertainty budget, is discussed.  相似文献
