Submicron stripe-shaped InGaN light-emitting diode (LED) arrays with individually addressable capabilities are demonstrated. The critical submicron- stripe metallic electrodes, which define the emission pattern, are formed by direct LED writing in a mask-free manner. The individually addressable submicron-stripe LEDs show excellent performance in terms of their electrical characteristics (with typical turn-on voltage of 3 V, operational stability and power output up to 28 ~W at 3 mA). Unlike conventional broad-sized LEDs, the efficiency droop of the submicron-stripe LED is significantly suppressed--in fact, there is no efficiency droop for current densities up to 100 A/cm^2. Furthermore, the submicron-stripe LED shows a lower temperature-dependent shift of the emission wavelength. The lateral emission width is increased with increasing injection current, resulting in a wider lateral emission size than the metallic submicron-stripe electrode. The underlying physics of these phenomena are analysed. Such submicron-stripe LED arrays open up promising applications in nanophotonics and bio-sensing.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to propose new means for harvesting energy using electrostrictive polymers. Recent trends in energy conversion mechanisms have demonstrated the abilities of electrostrictive polymers for converting mechanical vibrations into electricity. In particular, such materials present advantageous features such as a high productivity, high flexibility, and ease of processing; hence, the application of these materials for energy harvesting purposes has been of significant interest over the last few years. This paper discusses the development of a model that is able to predict the energy harvesting capabilities of an electrostrictive polymer. Moreover, the energy scavenging abilities of an electrostrictive composite composed of terpolymer poly(vinylidenefluoride-trofluoroethylene- chlorofluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)] filled with 1 vol% carbon black (C) is evaluated. Experimental measurements of the harvested power and current have been compared with the theoretical behavior predicted by the proposed model. A good agreement was observed between the two sets of data, which consequently validated the proposed modeling to optimize the choice of materials. It was also shown that the incorporation of nanofillers in P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) increased the harvested power.  相似文献

Harvesting systems capable of transforming unused environmental energy into useful electrical energy have been extensively studied for the last two decades. The recent development of electrostrictive polymers has generated new opportunities for harvesting energy. The contribution of this study lies in the design and validation of electrostrictive polymer- based harvesters able to deliver dc output voltage to the load terminal, making the practical application of such material for self-powered devices much more realistic. Theoretical analysis supported by experimental investigations showed that an energy harvesting module with ac-to-dc conversion allows scavenging power up to 7 μW using a bias electric field of 10 V/μm and a transverse strain of 0.2%. This represents a power density of 280 μW/cm(3) at 100 Hz, which is much higher than the corresponding values of most piezo-based harvesters.  相似文献

While temperature is fundamental to the design and optimal operation of shallow algal ponds, there is currently no temperature model universally applicable to these systems. This paper presents a model valid for any opaque water body of uniform temperature profile. This new universal model was tested against 1 year of experimental data collected from a wastewater treatment high rate algal pond. On the basis of 1 year of data collected every 15 min, the average errors of the predicted afternoon peak and predawn minimum were both only 1.3 °C and the average error between these extremes was just 1.2 °C. In order to demonstrate the improvement in accuracy gained, the expressions for heat fluxes used in nine prior temperature models were systematically substituted into the new universal model and evaluated against the experimental data. Errors in the peak and minimum temperatures increased by up to 2.1 and 3.2 °C, respectively, while the error between these extremes increased by up to 2.9 °C. In practical applications, these levels of inaccuracies could lead to an under/overestimation of the algal productivity and the evaporative water loss by approximately 40% and 300%, respectively.  相似文献

The development of a photo‐responsive micellar system capable of triggering cell death is reported. Precursors of the micelles are synthesized by connecting a lipophilic chain to a hydrophilic polyethylene glycol via a photo‐labile nitrobenzyl group. The resulting amphiphilic units are self‐assembled in water forming 12 nm micelles that are readily internalized into cells. Upon photo‐irradiation, micelles undergo cleavage and yield a cytotoxic nitrosobenzaldehyde derivative, which significantly inhibits the proliferation of MDA‐MB‐231 cells under standard in vitro conditions.  相似文献

The first functional light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) based on quasi 2D colloidal core/shell CdSe/CdZnS nanoplatelets (NPLs). The solution‐processed hybrid devices are optimized with respect to their electroluminescent characteristics, first, by improving charge injection through exchanging the as‐synthesized NPL long‐chain ligands to shorter ones such as 3‐mercaptopropionic acid, and second, by comparing different hole‐transporting layers. NPL‐LEDs exhibit a maximum luminance of 4499 cd m‐2 and external quantum efficiencies of 0.63%. In particular, over different applied voltages, systematically narrow electroluminescence of full width at half maximum (FWHM) in the range of 25–30 nm is observed to be independent from the choice of device configuration and NPL ligands. As spectrally narrow electroluminescence is highly attractive in terms of color purity in the context of LED applications, these results emphasize the unique potential of this new class of colloidal core/shell nanoplatelet in achieving bright and functional LEDs of superior color purity.  相似文献

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the immune changes seen during in vivo whole body hyperthermia are mediated by elevations in the plasma concentrations of either catecholamines, growth hormone or beta-endorphins. Eight healthy volunteers were immersed in a hot water bath (WI; water temperature 39.5 degrees C) for 2 h during which their rectal temperature rose to 39.5 degrees C. In a single blind, randomized, cross-over study the stress hormone effects were blocked one at a time by administration of propranolol, somatostatin or naloxone; the results were compared to those obtained during saline infusion (control). Blood samples were collected before, at the end of 2 h of WI (body temperature 39.5 degrees C), and 2 h later. Hormone blockade did not abolish the hyperthermia-induced recruitment of natural killer (NK) cells to the blood, and no influence was observed on the percentages or concentrations of any other subpopulations of blood mononuclear cells, except that the number of cluster designation (CD)3+ cells slightly increased after hyperthermia only in the propranolol experiment. Furthermore, the NK cell activity, both unstimulated and interferon-alpha or interleukin-2 stimulated, did not differ from the control situation. It is of interest, however, that somatostatin partly abolished the hyperthermia induced increase in the neutrophil number. Based on these data and previous results showing that growth hormone infusion increases the concentration of neutrophils in the blood, it is suggested that growth hormone is at least partly responsible for hyperthermia induced neutrocytosis.  相似文献

GaInAs/GaInAsP multi-quantum-well structures emitting at 1.55 mu m have been realised by gas source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE) over a large range of growth temperature. Threshold current densities as low as 0.81 kA/cm/sup 2/ have been obtained. The first BH lasers fabricated by GSMBE from these heterostructures exhibit low threshold current (18 mA) and linear DC light-current characteristics up to 20 mW.<>  相似文献
