Stress, reactivity, and immune function in healthy men.

Examined the effects of acute psychological stress on lymphocyte proliferation and circulating levels of interleukin-1 and -2. 20 healthy men were exposed to 2 viewings of a gruesome surgery film and were asked to recall details of the film twice during a 20-min period. These Ss were compared to a nonstress control group of 9 Ss. Lymphocyte proliferation to the mitogen concanavalin-A was decreased during and after exposure to the stressor when compared to the control group. This decrease was more pronounced in Ss exhibiting greater blood pressure reactivity while viewing the film than in Ss showing smaller blood pressure responses. None of the other immunological measures was significantly affected by the stressor. Cortisol was not correlated with lymphocyte responsiveness. A histomorphometric comparison of the muscular tissue reaction to stainless steel,pure titanium and titanium alloy implant materials

Thein vivo tissue reaction to titanium and titanium-based alloys using quantitative histomorphometry was investigated. According to the guidelines for biomaterials testing suggested by ISO, 2 mm × 6 mm cylindrical specimens of chemically pure (CP) Ti, TiO₂, electrolytically coated Ti, Ti6Al4V, TiO₂-coated Ti6Al4V, TiN physical vapour deposition-coated Ti6Al4V and Ti5Al2.5Fe were implanted in the paravertebral muscles of rats, for 1–52 weeks, 316L stainless steel being used as a control implant material. After PMMA embedding, electrochemical dissolution of the implants, microtome sectioning and Masson's trichrome staining, the tissue reaction was assayed using a semi-automatic method based on the digitization of both the encapsulating membrane contours and the different cell types located within it. All materials induced a close tissue reaction. There was no statistical difference between the tested materials regarding the time-evolution of the inflammatory cells. However, when comparing CP Ti with 316L, a significant difference was found in the fibrocyte kinetics: in the short term, fibrocyte densities were lower for 316L, while beyond 12 weeks, they exhibited higher values than CP Ti. To a lesser extent, a similar observation was made when comparing CP Ti with Ti5Al12.5Fe. No statistical difference was found in the comparison of CP Ti with Ti6Al4V. The membrane thickness was identical for all tested materials and appeared not to be time-dependent.     

Effects of guided imagery and music (GIM) therapy on mood and cortisol in healthy adults.

Healthy adults (N?=?28) participated in a randomized trial of Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM; a depth approach to music psychotherapy) sessions on mood and cortisol. Participants in both GIM and wait-list control conditions completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and donated 15 cc of blood before and after the 13-week intervention period and again at a 6-week follow-up. Split-plot factorial and post hoc analyses demonstrated that after 6 biweekly sessions GIM participants reported significant decreases between pre- and postsession depression, fatigue, and total mood disturbance and had significant decreases in cortisol level by follow-up. Pretest to follow-up decrease in cortisol was significantly associated with decrease in mood disturbance. A short series of GIM sessions may positively affect mood and reduce cortisol levels in healthy adults. Electronic transport properties of carbon nanotoroids

We investigate the electronic transport properties of carbon nanotori covalently connected to external electrodes made up of carbon nanotubes of various chiralities. The study is based on computing ballistic transport characteristics within the framework of Green's function theory using a simple π-orbital tight-binding model. The calculations focus on the effect of the relative angle made by the electrodes as they are placed at different positions along the nanoring. The conductance behavior is found to depend on the details of the atomic structure of the torus but also on the positions of the electrodes. Our findings are rationalized using an elementary quantum mechanical interference model, which reproduces well the main features of the numerical data.     

Autonomous Adsorption Cooling—Driven by Heat Storage Collected from Solar Heat

This study investigates the performance of an adsorption chiller driven by thermal heat collected from solar collectors’ panels with heat storage. The heat is reserved in a storage tank and the reserved heat is used to drive the adsorption chiller. The investigation was carried on the climatic conditions of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Heat transfer fluid goes from the collectors to the adsorption cooling unit, then from the adsorption cooling unit to the storage tank. It is seen that heat storage is more effective than direct solar coupling; however, it requires more collectors, depending on the size of the storage tank. The analysis shows that cycle time is one of the most influential parameters for the solar-driven adsorption cooling system. It is seen that the size of the collector can be reduced if the proper cycle time is adjusted. The analysis also revealed that the system with 22 collectors (each of 2.415 m²) along with 1000 s cycle time provides better performance for the base run conditions. It is also seen that the solar-driven adsorption chiller with heat storage works well beyond the sunset time.     

Optical study of zinc blend SnS and cubic In2S3:Al thin films prepared by chemical bath deposition

Multilayers of zinc blend SnS crystalline thin film have been deposited onto glass substrates by a chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The envelope method, based on the optical transmission spectrum taken at normal incidence, has been successfully applied to determine the layer thickness and to characterize optical properties of thin films having low surface roughness. Optical constants such as refractive index n, extinction coefficient k, as well as the real (??_r) and imaginary (??_i) parts of the dielectric constant were determined from transmittance spectrum using this method. Obtained low value of the extinction coefficient in the transparency domain is a good indication of film surface smoothness and homogeneity. To perform the heterojunction structure based on SnS absorber material, cubic In₂S₃:Al was deposited on SnO₂:F/glass as window layer using CBD with different aluminum content. Optical properties of these films were evaluated.     

Collective self-esteem as a moderator of the frog-pond effect in reactions to performance feedback.

Individuals who perform well within an unsuccessful group have more favorable reactions than equally capable individuals who perform poorly within a successful group. This frog-pond effect appears to occur because people focus on their relative performance standing within their group rather than on their group's overall performance level. It was hypothesized that this effect would be attenuated among people who value their social groups highly because they should be more likely than their counterparts to take into account their group's performance level when evaluating themselves. Four studies supported this reasoning. The frog-pond effect was strongest among individuals with lower collective self-esteem, an individualistic cultural heritage, or a weaker bond toward a particular social group. Primary cutaneous nocardia asteroides nocardiosis in an immunocompromised patient

INTRODUCTION: Nocardiasis is caused by a germ belonging to the Actinomycetales order. Skin disease usually occurs as a secondary localization of a pulmonary infection in an immunocompromised patient. Purely cutaneous lesions usually occur in immunocompetent subjects. CASE REPORT: We observed primary cutaneous nocardiasis due to N. asteroides with a cold abscess in a patient with a pemphigoid given immunodepression treatment. DISCUSSION: Primary cutaneous nocardiasis can occur by direct contamination of a skin wound. In our patient with a pemphigoid given immunodepression treatment, the erosion of a pemphigoid bulla and general corticosteroid treatment favoured the localized infection. Cure could not be obtained until after 7 months treatment. This long course can be explained by the need to continue high-dose general corticosteroids to control the pemphigoid.     

Per operative localization of a carcinoid tumour of the breast using indium-111 pentetreotide and a nuclear surgical probe

A 69-year-old woman presented with a single enlarged lymph node in the left axilla. Clinical examination and other investigations, including various imaging methods, failed to reveal the primary tumour. However, indium-111 pentetreotide scan revealed a site of uptake in the anterior region of the left thorax. Peroperative imaging with 111In-pentetreotide confirmed the tumour uptake and use of a nuclear surgical probe allowed precise localization of the tumour, which was completely resected.
