During 2001-2005, 210 Salmonella enterica strains were isolated from seafood samples imported into US. Strains of S. enterica serovar Weltevreden were the most predominantly found among the 64 different serovars isolated. A total of 37 Salmonella Weltevreden isolates were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), plasmid profiles and antibiotic susceptibility to assess genetic diversity. Our results showed a low frequency of antibiotic resistance; 35 of the 37 isolates were sensitive to ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, sulfisoxazole, streptomycin and kanamycin. Only two isolates, from samples originating in the Philippines and India, showed resistance to ampicillin and tetracycline and to streptomycin, sulfisoxazole and tetracycline, respectively. Of the 37 isolates, two isolates did not carry any plasmid and 35 isolates harbored several small and mega-plasmids. These isolates were differentiated into 10 distinct types based on plasmid profiles. Four different PFGE clusters were obtained with a genetic similarity of 66-76%. Four groups of isolates (formed by two or three isolates each) showed 100% similarity in the PFGE profiles. One of these groups included strains isolated in Vietnam in 2003, 2004 and 2005 from fish and shrimp. The other groups included strains isolated in Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand in 2000, 2004 and 2005 from snail, shrimp and fish. The haloacetamides, a class of emerging nitrogenous drinking water disinfection byproduct (DBPs), were analyzed for their chronic cytotoxicity and for the induction of genomic DNA damage in Chinese hamster ovary cells. The rank order for cytotoxicity of 13 haloacetamides was DIAcAm > IAcAm > BAcAm > TBAcAm > BIAcAm > DBCAcAm > CIAcAm > BDCAcAm > DBAcAm > BCAcAm > CAcAm > DCAcAm > TCAcAm. The rank order of their genotoxicity was TBAcAm > DIAcAm approximately equal to IAcAm > BAcAm > DBCAcAm > BIAcAm > BDCAcAm > CIAcAm > BCAcAm > DBAcAm > CAcAm > TCAcAm. DCAcAm was not genotoxic. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity were primarily determined by the leaving tendency of the halogens and followed the order I > Br > > Cl. With the exception of brominated trihaloacetamides, most of the toxicity rank order was consistent with structure-activity relationship expectations. For di- and trihaloacetamides, the presence of at least one good leaving halogen group (I or Br but not Cl) appears to be critical for significant toxic activity. Log P was not a factor for monohaloacetamides but may play a role in the genotoxicity of trihaloacetamides and possible activation of dihaloacetamides by intracellular GSH and -SH compounds. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The increased caloric requirements of HIV-positive individuals, undesirable side effects of treatment that may be worsened by malnutrition (but alleviated by nutritional support), and associated declines in adherence and possible increased drug resistance are all justifications for developing better interventions to strengthen the nutrition security of individuals receiving antiretroviral treatment. OBJECTIVE: To highlight key benefits and challenges relating to interventions aimed at strengthening the nutrition security of people living with HIV who are receiving antiretroviral treatment. METHODS: Qualitative research was undertaken on a short-term nutrition intervention linked to the provision of free antiretroviral treatment for people living with HIV in western Kenya in late 2005 and early 2006. RESULTS: Patients enrolled in the food program while on treatment regimens self-reported greater adherence to their medication, fewer side effects, and a greater ability to satisfy increased appetite. Most clients self-reported weight gain, recovery of physical strength, and the resumption of labor activities while enrolled in dual (food supplementation and treatment) programs. Such improvements were seen to catalyze increased support from family and community. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide further empirical support to calls for a more holistic and comprehensive response to the coexistence of AIDS epidemics with chronic nutrition insecurity. Future work is needed to clarify ways of bridging the gap between short-term nutritional support to individuals and longer-term livelihood security programming for communities affected by AIDS. Such interdisciplinary research will need to be matched by intersectoral action on the part of the agriculture and health sectors in such environments. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Anemia affects almost two-thirds of pregnant women in developing countries and contributes to maternal morbidity and mortality and to low birthweight. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of anemia and the dietary and socioeconomic factors associated with anemia in pregnant women living in an urban community setting in Hyderabad, Pakistan. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study of 1,369 pregnant women enrolled at 20 to 26 weeks of gestation and followed to 6 weeks postpartum. A blood sample was obtained at enrollment to determine hemoglobin levels. Information on nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and practice and dietary history regarding usual food intake before and during pregnancy were obtained by trained interviewers within 1 week of enrollment. RESULTS: The prevalence of anemia (defined by the World Health Organization as hemoglobin < 11.0 g/dL) in these subjects was 90.5%; of these, 75.0% had mild anemia (hemoglobin from 9.0 to 10.9 g/dL) and 14.8% had moderate anemia (hemoglobin from 7.0 to 8.9 g/dL). Only 0.7% were severely anemic (hemoglobin < 7.0 g/ dL). Nonanemic women were significantly taller, weighed more, and had a higher body mass index. Multivariate analysis after adjustment for education, pregnancy history, iron supplementation, and height showed that drinking more than three cups of tea per day before pregnancy (adjusted prevalence odds ratio [aPOR], 3.2; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3 to 8.0), consumption of clay or dirt during pregnancy (aPOR, 3.7; 95% CI, 1.1 to 12.3), and never consuming eggs or consuming eggs less than twice a week during pregnancy (aPOR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.1 to 2.5) were significantly associated with anemia. Consumption of red meat less than twice a week prior to pregnancy was marginally associated with anemia (aPOR, 1.2; 95% CI, 0.8 to 1.8) but was significantly associated with lower mean hemoglobin concentrations (9.9 vs. 10.0 g/dL, p = .05) during the study period. A subanalysis excluding women with mild anemia found similar associations to those of the main model, albeit even stronger. CONCLUSIONS: A high percentage of women at 20 to 26 weeks of pregnancy had mild to moderate anemia. Pica, tea consumption, and low intake of eggs and red meat were associated with anemia. Women of childbearing age should be provided nutritional education regarding food sources of iron, especially prior to becoming pregnant, and taught how food choices can either enhance or interfere with iron absorption. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the impact of knockout of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) and Se-glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPX1) on murine bone biomechanical properties. Femora samples were collected from wild-type (WT), SOD1-knockout [SOD1(-/-)] and GPX1-knockout [GPX1(-/-)] female mice (9-wk old, n = 7-8 per genotype) to assay for bone enzyme activities and mechanical properties in three point bending. Prior to testing, all mice were fed a torula yeast diet supplemented with 0.4 mg Se/kg as sodium selenite. Compared with the WT mice, SOD1(-/-) mice displayed a series of reductions (p < 0.05): 24% in body mass, 8% in femoral length, 43% in femoral structural strength, and 32% in bending stiffness. When differences in body size were accounted for, femoral failure moment in SOD1(-/-) mice remained lower (p < 0.05) than that of WT. Femoral tartrate resistant acid phosphatase activity in SOD1(-/-) was 47% greater (p < 0.05) than the WT. In contrast, GPX1(-/-) mice showed no significant differences in femoral mechanical properties from those of WT mice. In conclusion, knockout of SOD1 exerted a greater impact on femoral mechanical characteristics than that of GPX1 in growing mice. 相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of two commonly used microbial inoculants (Lactobacillus buchneri (LB) and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP)), formic acid (FA) and quebracho tannins (QT) on the fermentation quality, aerobic stability and in situ rumen degradation of pea/wheat bi‐crop forages. Precision‐chopped spring pea (Pisum sativum, var Magnus) and wheat (Triticum aestivum, var Axona) bi‐crops (3:1 pea/wheat ratio) harvested at a combined dry matter (DM) content of 301 g kg?1 were used for the study. The bi‐crops were conserved without (Control) or with inoculants based on lactic acid bacteria (LB (105 CFU g?1 fresh weight (FW)) or LP (106 CFU g?1 FW)), QT (16 g kg?1 FW) or FA (2.5 g kg?1 FW) in laboratory silos of 1.5 kg capacity, with each treatment being replicated six times. The pH, chemical composition, aerobic stability and in situ rumen degradation of DM, nitrogen (N) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) after 112 days of ensilage were measured. The average pH at silo opening was 4.0, suggesting that the silages were well fermented. There were no significant effects of additive treatment on water‐soluble carbohydrate, total N, soluble N, ammonia N and NDF. Lactic acid and acetic acid were the main fermentation products. High concentrations of acetic acid were found in all the treatments, indicating a heterofermentative pathway. Although FA treatment gave the most aerobically stable silage, the Control and QT‐treated silages did not heat up by more than 1 °C until after 6 days of exposure to air. There were no effects of additives on DM degradation characteristics.
