Volcanogenic fluorine in rainwater around active degassing volcanoes: Mt. Etna and Stromboli Island,Italy

Many studies have assessed the strong influence of volcanic activity on the surrounding environment. This is particularly true for strong gas emitters such as Mt. Etna and Stromboli volcanoes. Among volcanic gases, fluorine compounds are potentially very harmful. Fluorine cycling through rainwater in the above volcanic areas was studied analysing more than 400 monthly bulk samples. Data indicate that only approximately 1% of fluorine emission through the plume is deposited on the two volcanic areas by meteoric precipitations. Although measured bulk rainwater fluorine fluxes are comparable to and sometimes higher than in heavily polluted areas, their influence on the surrounding vegetation is limited. Only annual crops, in fact, show some damage that could be an effect of fluorine deposition, indicating that long-living endemic plant species or varieties have developed some kind of resistance.     

Effect of La2O3 doping on the microstructure and electrical properties of a SnO2-based varistor

The effect of La₂O₃ addition on the densification and electrical properties of the (0.9895-xSnO₂+0.01CoO+0.0005Nb₂O₅+x La₂O₅ system, where x=0.0005 or 0.00075, was considered in this study. The samples were sintered at 1300 °C for 2 and 4 h and a single SnO₂ phase was identified by X-ray diffraction. Microstructure analysis by scanning electron microscopy showed that the affect of La₂O₃ addition is to decrease the SnO₂ grain size. J versus E curves indicated that the system exhibits a varistor behavior and the effect of La₂O₃ is to increase both the non-linear coefficient () and the breakdown voltage (E₂). Considering the Schottky thermionic emission model the potential height and the width were estimated. The addition of small amounts of La₂O₃ to the basic system increases the potential barrier height and decreases both grain size and potential barrier width. © 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers     

Piezoelectric properties of Bi4Ti3O12 thin films annealed in different atmospheres

Bismuth titanate (Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂—BIT) films were evaluated for use as lead-free piezoelectric thin-films in micro-electromechanical systems. The films were grown by the polymeric precursor method on Pt/Ti/SiO₂/Si (1 0 0) (Pt) bottom electrodes at 700 °C for 2 h in static air and oxygen atmospheres. The domain structure was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Annealing in static air leads to better ferroelectric properties, higher remanent polarization, lower drive voltages and higher piezoelectric coefficient. On the other hand, oxygen atmosphere favors the imprint phenomenon and reduces the piezoelectric coefficient dramatically. Impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show a dramatic increase in the resistivity for the films annealed in static air atmopshere.     

3D simulation as training tool in container terminals: The TRAINPORTS simulator

Modeling & Simulation (M&S) provides one of the best solutions for personnel and managers training in complex environments. In this article, the authors present an advanced High Level Architecture (HLA) federation of simulators (TRAINPORTS, TRAINing in marine PORTs by using Simulation), that recreates in a three-dimensional virtual environment the most important transshipment terminal of the South Mediterranean area, the Gioia Tauro container terminal. The TRAINPORTS federation includes four different federates (Straddle Carrier, Quay Crane, Forklift and Truck) and offers an advanced tool for marine port operators’ training providing the sensation of being in a real container terminal environment. The TRAINPORTS federation is part of an innovative family of simulators (called ST_VP, Simulation Team Virtual Port). This article presents the TRAINPORTS architecture, describes the federates/federation development process and discusses the simulators operation modes and verification and validation issues.     

Experimental and theoretical aspects of the stabilization of zirconia.

Using the Rietveld method, phases of ceria-doped zirconia, calcined at temperatures of 600 and 900 °C, were quantitatively analysed for different concentrations of ceria. The results show that the stabilization of zirconia depends on the dopant concentration and calcination temperature. Moreover, the theoretical calculation using the ab initio Hartree–Fock–Roothaan method indicates that the most stable phases for ceria-stabilized zirconia are cubic or tetragonal, in accordance with experimental results.     

Lipolytic Enzyme Production by Immobilized Rhizopus oryzae

In this paper, a suitable technique as well as an adequate material for the immobilization of the fungus Rhizopus oryzae were investigated. This organism has been shown to have potential in the field of food aroma due to the production of extracellular lipolytic enzymes. However, an efficient production system at bioreactor scale for its application to the flavor compounds production is still needed. Among the supports studied, alginate beads were the best carrier materials, leading to the highest lipolytic activities of up to 400 U/L after 3 days of cultivation. Repeated batch cultures were carried out to improve cell concentration and lipolytic activity. The gel beads produced lipolytic enzyme under optimized conditions for consecutive batch fermentations without marked activity loss and deformation attained a maximum level of 715 U/L after three batches. The production of lipolytic enzyme by immobilized Rhizopus oryzae in a 2‐litre airlift bioreactor with the optimized conditions was evaluated. Lipolytic activities of 487 U/L were attained, operating in successive batches without operational problems and the bioparticles (the fungus grows in alginate beads) maintained their shape throughout fermentation.
