Composite nonlinear feedback design for discrete-time switching systems with disturbances and input saturation

This paper addresses the problem of robust controller design for a class of discrete-time switching systems with input saturation. To this aim, the composite nonlinear feedback method is extended to design a robust controller with improved performances in terms of the response speed and overshoot in the presence of disturbances and input saturation. The proposed approach is theoretically analysed and its closed-loop stability is proved. Then, the performance of the proposed method is verified using numerical simulations.     

Cryptanalysis and improvement of a robust smart card secured authentication scheme on SIP using elliptic curve cryptography

The session initiation protocol (SIP) has been receiving a lot of attention to provide security in the Voice over IP (VoIP) in Internet and mobility management. Recently, Yeh et al. proposed a smart card-based authentication scheme for SIP using elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). They claimed that their scheme is secure against known security attacks. However, in this paper, we indicate that Yeh et al.’s scheme is vulnerable to off-line password guessing attack, user impersonation attack and server impersonation attack, in the case that the smart card is stolen and the information stored in the smart card is disclosed. As a remedy, we also propose an improved smart card-based authentication scheme which not only conquers the security weaknesses of the related schemes but also provides a reduction in computational cost. The proposed scheme also provides the user anonymity and untraceability, and allows a user to change his/her password without informing the remote server. To show the security of our protocol, we prove its security the random oracle model.     

Does Ergonomics Improve Product Quality and Reduce Costs? A Review Article

Competition is an ongoing challenge confronting industrial corporations, particularly automobile manufacturing. Striving to improve product quality and productivity, automotive industries have used different quality management approaches, such as reduced variability, total quality management, and lean management, over recent years. Furthermore, incorporating proactive ergonomics such as physical and organizational ergonomics and psychosocial factors into the structure of a company is considered to be a support for productivity and quality. Several studies have shown the effects of ergonomics on better quality. Application of both quality management approaches and ergonomics in an integrated manner in the manufacturing production system is emphasized because they are similar concepts with the same objectives, that is, to improve efficiency. In this study, a comprehensive review was undertaken and 25 studies were reviewed in order to define how integration of an ergonomic approach in the manufacturing production system can reduce defects and improve quality in the production process.

The CO-catalyzed conversion of H2S to H2 + sulfur part 2. The thermal decomposition of COS

The pyrolysis of COS has been studied over the temperature range 300 to 750°C using a variety of catalysts. The observed product distribution confirmed that two parallel reaction paths: 2 COS → 2 CO S₂ (2) and 2 COS → CO₂ + CS₂ (4) are involved in the decomposition. The decomposition yield increased with rising temperature, accompanied with a shift in selectivity. At temperatures lower than ～700°C the disproportionation reaction 4 was predominant, whereas at temperatures higher than 700°C, reaction 2 was favoured. In the high-temperature region (700 to 750°C) it was possible to achieve full suppression of reaction 4 with added CS₂. The pyrolysis of COS was also studied in a reactor packed with quartz chips without catalysts at high temperatures. Between 800 and 900°C, up to 99% conversion (with respect to the thermodynamic limit) could be achieved, with the almost complete absence of the disproportionation reaction 4. The results point to the commercial potential in the two-step reaction sequence: for the economic conversion of hydrogen sulfide to hydrogen and sulfur.     

Structural changes in catalytic hydroprocessing of syncrude coker gas oil

A method of Structural Group Analysis (SGA) was used to characterize feed and liquid products from catalytic hydroprocessing using a commercial Ni-Mo catalyst. Comparison of the structural profiles revealed significant changes in the concentration of various structural groups. SGA is a promising tool for investigating chemical changes in complex reacting systems.     

Enhancing non-task sociability of asynchronous CSCL environments

While from a technological perspective Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) systems have been improved considerably, previous studies have shown that the social aspect of the CSCL is often neglected or assumed to happen automatically by simply creating such virtual learning environments. By distinguishing between students’ non-task social interactions from on-task interactions, and through a content analysis, this paper demonstrates that non-task interactions do occur frequently in CSCL environments. Furthermore, by conducting a self-reported survey, the present study operationalizes non-task sociability of CSCL environments and determines factors that affect them. The findings from the survey revealed that the sense of cohesion and awareness about others significantly impact the non-task sociability of CSCL. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the perception of self-representation and perception of compatibility affect the sense of cohesion and awareness about others and indirectly contribute to the perceived non-pedagogical sociability of the environment. The findings of this paper can be used in future research for investigating the relationship between the non-task sociability of CSCL and other CSCL factors. The study also provides the CSCL lecturers and facilitators with a conceptual model by which sociability can be explicitly addressed in their course planning and delivery processes. And finally, this study develops and validates an instrument that guides required changes in current CSCL systems to improve the non-task social functionality of the environment.     

Effect of Magnetic Field Dynamics on the Copper‐Constantan Thermocouple Performance

Abstract

This paper presents some results of experimental research addressing the influence of magnetic field dynamics on the copper‐constantan thermocouple performance. There are challenges in measuring temperature by thermocouples in a time‐dependent magnetic field. Although there is considerable experience on the effect of a static magnetic field, there is a lack of awareness of the outcome of a varying field on thermocouple performance. We measured the accuracy of the thermocouple response in an alternating magnetic field for various operational parameters: frequency of the magnetic field, geometry, and length of the thermocouple wire in the field, and magnetic field strength. The effect of each of the operational parameters is discussed. Test results of temperature profile measure by a copper‐constantan thermocouple in a varying magnetic field system that was used in a room temperature magnetic refrigeration test bed are demonstrated.
