Summary Cross-polarization spectra of solid polymers can be misleading when the material exhibits proton spinlattice relaxation in the rotating frame which cannot be represented by a single exponential. Quantitative and qualitative demonstrations of the problem are given. The use of two experimental procedures for alleviating the difficulties is suggested, and examples for polyalkenes and for polyethylene terephthalate are illustrated.  相似文献

The effect of backbone flexibility on the thermal behaviour of the polyimides was investigated by synthesizing copolyimides based on pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and benzidine (B), p-phenylene diamine (P), and p,p′-diamino diphenyl methane (D). Soluble polyamic acids were obtained by carrying the reaction in dimethyl formamide (DMF) at 0°C. The cyclodehydration of amic acid to polyimides was carried out by chemical means (acetic anhydride : pyridine). Several copolyimides were prepared by changing the molar ratios of diamines in initial monomer feed. These were characterized by evaluation of intrinsic viscosity of polyamic acid in DMF at 30°C. The presence of amic acid and imide structures in the backbone was confirmed by IR spectra. Thermal behaviour of the polymers in air and nitrogen atmosphere was evaluated by dynamic thermogravimetry. The integral procedural decomposition temperature and activation energy of thermal degradation has been evaluated.  相似文献

A major drawback of cured phenol formaldehyde resin is the presence of microvoids, resulting from the liberation of condensation byproducts. In an attempt to rectify this, phenolic resol resin was blended with unsaturated polyester (UP). UPs with various maleic anhydride (MA) to phthalic anhydride (PA) ratios were synthesized and later mixed with resol resin in various proportions. The best MA/PA ratio was found out by determining the specific gravity, acetone‐soluble matter, and volatile content of the cast blend, cured under a satisfactory time–temperature schedule. The influence of acid value of the UP and the most desirable UP content were also investigated on the basis of the quality of the modified phenolic samples. The structural changes in the modified resin were studied using FTIR spectroscopy. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of the fractured surfaces were obtained to ascertain the extent of microvoids in the modified resin. Both thermogravimetric analysis results and SEM micrographs confirm the effectiveness of UP in reducing the microvoids in the cast resol resin. The tensile and impact strengths of the samples also reflect the superior quality of the resol phenolic resins that have been modified by UP. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single-phase calcium hydroxyapatite (HAP) was synthesized by a sol–gel route using calcium nitrate solution and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate solution as Ca and P sources and alginic acid as a chelating agent. The dried gel was heat-treated at different temperatures in the range of 110°–900°C. Structural evolution from sol to gel and from the gel to HAP was studied by the powder X-ray diffraction method, Infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analyses. The formation temperature of HAP was confirmed to be ∼300°C. Examination of the product obtained at 300°C under TEM suggested the development of hexagonal-shaped nanoparticles, with the average particle size in the range of 50–100 nm.  相似文献

Apoptosis interchangeably referred to as programmed cell death is a key pathway for regulating homeostasis and morphogenesis of mammalian cells and is connected with several diseases, in particular, cancer. It is widely believed that misregulation of this pathway leads to the development of cancer. Reflecting this knowledge, the mechanism of action for many currently used anticancer agents were specifically targeted to regulate the apoptotic pathway further stressing the role of programmed cell death in maintaining normal homeostasis. Another widely accepted concept is the consumption of a variety of colorful foods with strong antioxidant properties. These dietary components also referred to as bioactives would help maintain a healthy body. Although for many of these bioactives exact nutritional benefits are not yet well defined, there is demonstrated scientific evidence suggesting a role for them in cancer prevention. This review summarizes the current knowledge of food bioactives that act through the signaling pathway inducing programmed cell death, thus providing the evidence for these substances in cancer prevention.  相似文献

Anode-respiring bacteria (ARB) are able to transfer electrons from reduced substrates to a solid electrode. Previously, we developed a biofilm model based on the Nernst-Monod equation to describe the anode potential losses of ARB that transfer electrons through a solid conductive matrix. In this work, we develop an experimental setup to demonstrate how well the Nernst-Monod equation is able to represent anode potential losses in an ARB biofilm. We performed low-scan cyclic voltammetry (LSCV) throughout the growth phase of an ARB biofilm on a graphite electrode growing on acetate in continuous mode. The (j)V response of 9 LSCVs corresponded well to the Nernst-Monod equation, and the half-saturation potential (E(KA)) was -0.425 +/- 0.002 V vs Ag/AgCl at 30 degrees C (-0.155 +/- 0.002 V vs SHE). Anode-potential losses from the potential of acetate reached approximately 0.225 V at current density saturation, and this loss was determined by our microbial community's E(KA) value. The LSCVs at high current densities showed no significant deviation from the Nernst-Monod ideal shape, indicating that the conductivity of the biofilm matrix (kappa(bio)) was high enough (> or = 0.5 mS/cm) that potential loss did not affect the performance of the biofilm anode. Our results confirm the applicability of the Nernst-Monod equation for a conductive biofilm anode and give insights of the processes that dominate anode potential losses in microbial fuel cells.  相似文献
