We have used spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) to measure layer thicknesses of HfO2/La2O3 and La2O3/HfO2 stacks on SiO2/p-Si. Two approaches to extract layer thicknesses from a single SE measurement were shown to be inaccurate, possibly due to similarities in the optical dispersions of HfO2 and La2O3. The approach where SE data was collected after deposition of each layer and only the thickness of the top layer was determined by modeling was found to be capable of accurately measuring the thickness of each layer. These conclusions are supported by angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS), X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) measurements.  相似文献

Glycoalkaloids in potato-derived products result in bitter taste and potentially toxic effects at high intakes. Generally, extraction of glycoalkaloids prior to HPLC analysis is carried out by dilute acetic acid. For most potato-derived extracts including heat-coagulated potato proteins, this extraction method is sufficient to achieve satisfying tri-glycoalkaloid (TGA) recoveries. Soluble potato proteins obtained by non-denaturing processes show different requirements for glycoalkaloid extraction. TGA extraction was optimized for two commercially available native potato protein isolates and compared to heat-coagulated potato protein. The highest TGA levels were determined in the extract when extraction was carried out at 40 °C by at least 5 % acetic or propionic acid supplemented with 20 mM Na-1-heptanesulfonate (HSA). Addition of HSA results in substantially improved TGA extraction and induces precipitation of soluble protein which enhanced sample cleanup. On the contrary, extraction of TGA from coagulated potato protein in the presence of HSA showed a reduced TGA extraction efficiency. This improved TGA extraction procedure for soluble non-denatured potato protein isolates results in reliable quantification of bitter tasting and toxic glycoalkaloid levels. This contributes to a non-bitter and safe use of the nutritional and functional benefits of this plant protein in food applications.  相似文献

Many therapeutic peptides can still be improved with respect to target specificity, target affinity, resistance to peptidases/proteases, physical stability, and capacity to pass through membranes required for oral delivery. Several modifications can improve the peptides’ properties, in particular those that impose (a) conformational constraint(s). Screening of constrained peptides and the identification of hits is greatly facilitated by the generation of genetically encoded libraries. Recent breakthrough bacterial, phage, and yeast display screening systems of ribosomally synthesized post-translationally constrained peptides, particularly those of lanthipeptides, are earning special attention. Here we provide an overview of display systems for constrained, genetically encoded peptides and indicate prospects of constrained peptide-displaying phage and bacterial systems as such in vivo.  相似文献

In order to study the influence of melt viscosity and molecular weight on nanotube dispersion and electrical volume resistivity, three different polycarbonates (PCs) varying in molecular weight were melt compounded with 1 wt% multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, Baytubes® 150 HP) using a small-scale compounder. The experiments were performed at constant melt temperature but at varying mixing speeds, thereby applying different magnitudes of shear stress. Light transmission microscopy was used to access the state of agglomerate dispersion, and electrical resistivities of the composites were measured on pressed plates. The results indicate that with increasing matrix viscosity the agglomerate dispersion gets better when using constant mixing conditions but worse considering comparable shear stress values. To study the effect of molecular weight, in a second set of experiments melt temperatures were adjusted so that all PCs had similar viscosity and mixing was performed at constant mixing speed. As investigated on two viscosity levels, the composites based on the low molecular weight matrix showed smaller sized un-dispersed primary agglomerates as compared to composites with higher molecular weight matrices, highlighting the role of matrix infiltration into primary nanotube agglomerates as the first step of dispersion. The resistivity values of composites prepared using low viscosity matrices were lower than those of composites from high viscosity matrix.  相似文献

This article reports the preparation and characterization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)‐filled thermoplastic polyurethane–urea (TPUU) and carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (XNBR) blend nanocomposites. The dispersion of the MWCNTs was carried out using a laboratory two roll mill. Three different loadings, that is, 1, 3, and 5 wt % of the MWCNTs were used. The electron microscopy image analysis proves that the MWCNTs are evenly dispersed along the shear flow direction. Through incorporation of the nanotubes in the blend, the tensile modulus was increased from 9.90 ± 0.5 to 45.30 ± 0.3 MPa, and the tensile strength at break was increased from 25.4 ± 2.5 to 33.0 ± 1.5 MPa. The wide angle X‐ray scattering result showed that the TPUU:XNBR blends were arranged in layered structures. These structures are formed through chemical reactions of ? NH group from urethane and urea with the carboxylic group on XNBR. Furthermore, even at a very low loading, the high degree of nanotubes dispersion results in a significant increase in the electrical percolation threshold. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Background

Probiotics are an upcoming group of nutraceuticals claiming positive effects on athlete??s gut health, redox biology and immunity but there is lack of evidence to support these statements.

Methods

We conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo controlled trial to observe effects of probiotic supplementation on markers of intestinal barrier, oxidation and inflammation, at rest and after intense exercise. 23 trained men received multi-species probiotics (1010 CFU/day, Ecologic?Performance or OMNi-BiOTiC?POWER, n?=?11) or placebo (n?=?12) for 14?weeks and performed an intense cycle ergometry over 90 minutes at baseline and after 14?weeks. Zonulin and ??1-antitrypsin were measured from feces to estimate gut leakage at baseline and at the end of treatment. Venous blood was collected at baseline and after 14?weeks, before and immediately post exercise, to determine carbonyl proteins (CP), malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidation status of lipids (TOS), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-??), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Statistical analysis used multifactorial analysis of variance (ANOVA). Level of significance was set at p?<?0.05, a trend at p?<?0.1.

Results

Zonulin decreased with supplementation from values slightly above normal into normal ranges (<30?ng/ml) and was significantly lower after 14?weeks with probiotics compared to placebo (p?=?0.019). We observed no influence on ??1-antitrypsin (p?>?0.1). CP increased significantly from pre to post exercise in both groups at baseline and in the placebo group after 14?weeks of treatment (p?=?0.006). After 14?weeks, CP concentrations were tendentially lower with probiotics (p?=?0.061). TOS was slightly increased above normal in both groups, at baseline and after 14?weeks of treatment. There was no effect of supplementation or exercise on TOS. At baseline, both groups showed considerably higher TNF-?? concentrations than normal. After 14?weeks TNF-?? was tendentially lower in the supplemented group (p?=?0.054). IL-6 increased significantly from pre to post exercise in both groups (p?=?0.001), but supplementation had no effect. MDA was not influenced, neither by supplementation nor by exercise.

Conclusions

The probiotic treatment decreased Zonulin in feces, a marker indicating enhanced gut permeability. Moreover, probiotic supplementation beneficially affected TNF-?? and exercise induced protein oxidation. These results demonstrate promising benefits for probiotic use in trained men.

The interactions of the ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) with different grades of carbon black have been investigated using rheological measurements, differential scanning calorimetry and Raman spectroscopy. We could prove strong attractive interactions of AMIMCl with the carbon black surface, which result, for example, in the formation of an AMIMCl–carbon black–bucky gel and in an increased glass transition temperature of the ionic liquid in the presence of carbon black. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the AMIMCl is preferably attached to the edges of graphitic crystals at the carbon black surface, which have the highest adsorption energies. A surface treatment of different grades of carbon black with AMIMCl led to significant changes of the mechanical and electrical properties of different rubber compounds filled with carbon black, which can be attributed to a decreased filler–polymer interaction and a local plasticising effect of the AMIMCl at the carbon black surface.  相似文献

This study shows that the degradation mechanism and kinetics of monodisperse oligo(lactic acid)s esterified with N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMAm) are strongly influenced by the nature of the chain end. Oligomers with free hydroxyl chain ends degraded predominantly by chain end scission via a backbiting mechanism with a pseudo first-order rate constant kbb=2.7 h−1 in aqueous buffer (37 °C, pH 7.2). Once the hydroxyl groups were protected by acetylation, random chain scission became the rate limiting step with kr=0.022 h−1 under the same conditions. Using these rate constants, the theoretical time-resolved degradation profile was calculated for every (intermediate) degradation product and corresponded very well with the experimental results. The rate of formation of HPMAm was independent of the chain length for the acetylated oligomers, while the hydroxyl terminated oligomers with an even number of lactic acid units formed HPMAm more rapidly than oligomers with an odd number of units. The possibility to fine-tune the degradation rate is relevant when applied as e.g. hydrogels for controlled release or tissue engineering materials.  相似文献

Recently, a novel two‐component injection molding process has been developed for combining thermoplastics with thermoset rubbers. This process is of interest for example when thermoplastic parts include seals which are usually produced out of thermoset rubber. The present study evaluates the influence of different process parameters on the bond strength by means of a half factorial experimental design. The considered process parameters are the mold temperature at the interface, the injection temperature, the injection speed, the holding pressure, and the initial roughness of the thermoplastic part at the later interface. The study indicates a large influence of the mold temperature at the interface. Furthermore, the holding pressure only affects the adhesion strength when it is set too low or when the holding time is too short.
