The utility of volatile hydrocarbon analysis in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning

The authors verified a decrease in human enamel microhardness after application of the following carbamide peroxide gel bleaching agents for 8 hours daily for 1 week: 10% Nite White, 16% Nite White, Opalescence, Karisma Alpha and Perfect Smile. Statistical analysis showed that these agents caused a decrease in enamel microhardness. Nite White (16%) was the most effective in reducing enamel microhardness and Opalescente the least effective. Nite White (10%), Karisma Alpha and Perfect Smile fell into a statistically intermediate position.     

Development of Compact 500 kV 8000 a Gas Insulated Transmission Line-Dust Control during Field Jointing and Method for Detecting Conductive Particles

This paper describes the results of studies made on dust control during field jointing and a method for detecting conductive particles after installation in the development of a compact 500 kV 8000 A gas insulated transmission line (GIL). The study on dust control during field jointing proved that field jointing of the compact GIL can be done like conventional GIL in an easily fabricated vinyl shelter without a clean air flow. Harmful conductive particles can be detected with an Acoustic Emission (AE) sensor. This sensor is effective in improving the reliability of the compact GIL when used with a suitable ac voltage during field test. A 120 m long test line of compact 500 kV 8000 A GIL was constructed and, in a long-term field test, proved to have properties sufficient for practical use.     

A class of systems with the same observer

Compatibility of the observer designed for a linear time-invariant system is discussed and a class of systems to which a given observer is compatible is explicitly stated. This class gives allowable variations of system parameters such that the designed observer is still compatible to the system when the system changes its characteristics. An application to the regulator problem is described briefly.     

GaAs varactor diode for u.h.f. t.v. tuners

The design and fabrication of a GaAs varactor diode for u.h.f. t.v. tuners were carried out using a GaAs double epitaxial layer. The capacitance ratio of diode. C3/C25, is 6.0 and the series resistance at 470 MHz is 0.24 ?. These characteristics are much better than those of an Si diode and well satisfy the requirements for t.v. tuners.     

Ca12Al14O33: A new piezoelectric material

Crystals of Ca₁₂Al₁₄O₃₃ about 5 cm long and 1.8 cm diameter have been grown using the Czochralski technique and their piezoelectric, elastic and dielectric properties determined as a function of temperature. It has been shown that the material is unlikely to possess a cut with a zero temperature coefficient of delay for either bulk or surface wave propagation, although its high bulk wave velocities and reasonable piezoelectric coupling could make it interesting for these applications.

Properties of ultrasonically irradiated human serum lipoproteins

Human serum low density lipoprotein (LDL) and human serum high density lipoprotein (HDL) were treated with ultrasonic irradiation. The immunochemical properties, spectrophotometrical analysis and thiobarbituric acid test (TBA) value of ultrasonically irradiated lipoproteins were examined. The agar gel precipitin reaction of sonicated LDL disappeared as the irradiation time increased. The effects of ultrasonic irradiation upon human serum lipoproteins resulted in a loss of lipids from the sonicated lipoproteins and are increased in TBA value. TBA value of LDL increased in two steps.
