Finite Element Analysis of a Moving Boundary Value Problem

A finite element formulation and the solution of a set of nonlinear coupled heat and mass transfer equations for a two-phase system with a moving evaporation interface is presented. The interface condition takes into account the moisture transfer balance at the moving boundary. The finite element results were compared with existing results for a single phase system for model validation. In the two-phase system, the movement of evaporation front has an appreciable effect on the temperature and moisture distribution inside the porous medium during drying. The effect of the nondimensional heat of vapourization parameter γ on the evaporation front, temperature and moisture distribution in porous medium was studied. The higher the value of γ, the slower is the movement of the evaporation front. The temperature decreased and the moisture content increased as the nondimensional vapourization parameter γ increased. This model has potential applications in studying the heat and mass transfer characteristics in food and biomaterials.     

The kappa opioid receptor expressed on the mouse R1.1 thymoma cell line down-regulates without desensitizing during chronic opioid exposure

The R1.1 mouse thymoma cell line expresses a single class of kappa opioid receptors that is negatively coupled to adenylyl cyclase through a Bordetella pertussis toxin-sensitive inhibitory guanine nucleotide-binding protein. The aim of the present study was to determine whether chronic opioid treatment of R1.1 cells altered either the binding properties or the functional response associated with the kappa opioid receptor. Culturing of R1.1 cells with the kappa-selective agonist (trans)-3,4-dichloro-N-methyl-N-[2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-cyclohexyl] benzeneacetamide methane-sulfonate hydrate (U50,488) for 3 hr and longer, followed by extensive washing of R1.1 cell membranes, produced a concentration- and time-dependent reduction in the binding of the kappa-selective ligand (5 alpha,7 alpha,8 beta)-(-)-N-methyl-N-(7-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-1- oxaspiro(4,5)dec-8-yl) benzeneacetamide ([3H]U69,593). Culturing of R1.1 cells with 100 nM U50,488 for 24 hr produced approximately a 50% reduction in the Bmax value for [3H]U69,593 and [3H]naloxone binding. In contrast to the reduction in binding, there was no change in the inhibition of adenylyl cyclase activity by (-)-U50,488. To determine whether kappa opioid receptor function was maintained by spare receptors after agonist-induced down-regulation, membranes from untreated R1.1 cells were incubated with 400 nM of the irreversible opioid antagonist beta-chlornaltrexamine (beta-CNA) followed by extensive washing. beta-CNA produced a 50% reduction in the [3H]U69,593 binding and a 6-fold increase in the IC50 value for (-)-U50,488 inhibition of adenylyl cyclase activity, with no change in the maximal inhibition of cyclic AMP levels.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Test of the deterministic conjecture for the instantaneous time phase fluctuations of an oscillator

The fluctuations observed by recording the picosecond pulses of a mode-locked laser with a synchroscan streak camera are due to the laser jitter and to the variations of the zero crossing of the synchronization. By means of a simple model, it is shown that the dispersions measured when the synchronization is generated from the mode-locker oscillator reflect the instantaneous time phase fluctuations of this oscillator. From the study of the experimental recordings with methods of time series analysis it results that the phase noise of the electronic oscillator is consistent with an underlying low-dimensional strange attractor.     

Values in educating for citizenship: sources, influences and assessment

This article considers social factors that have led to concerns regarding disaffection and disengagement of young people. The introduction of Citizenship Education in the United Kingdom is seeking to redress conditions of apathy and cynicism about public life. While the indirect transmission of values in relation to democracy and citizenship could previously be relied upon at an implicit level, both the growing diversity of values in society, and the way that values feature in changing concepts of citizenship, require that they be examined and articulated explicitly. The influence of values has been acknowledged in corporate culture and is considered to be a crucial factor in managing educational change. However, the external imposition of values implied by citizenship education appears paternalistic and unrealistic considering the diversity inherent in a multiracial and multicultural society. Rather, the challenge presented to schools lies in taking a framework of democratic values to expose every aspect of education to re-examination. With the values of citizenship and democracy underpinning and directing practice in institutions, citizenship education can become an agenda for democratic change.     

Induced chemiluminescence of oxidized fatty acids and oils

The injection of a strong organic base into milligram quantities of fats and oils dissolved in methylene chloride results in a burst of chemiluminescence whose peak intensity is a function of the previous thermal oxidation history and of the degree of unsaturation of the starting material. The flash of this induced chemiluminescence can be 10⁸ times higher than the steady-state “spontaneous” chemiluminescence. The kinetics of the induced chemiluminescence are first order in concentration and second order in time. The emission spectrum is broad and extends into the near infrared. A model based on dioxetane chemiluminescence is proposed to explain the observed kinetics.     

HARDBALL: Local Government’s Foray Into Sports Franchise Ownership

Smaller cities seeking new economic development vehicles have embraced the growth of minor league sports. In an attempt to eliminate the threat of competition and maintain a sense of stability, four local governments purchased their respective minor league baseball franchise. This action may serve as a model for local governments that have invested heavily in professional sports as an economic development strategy. This study investigates the benefits of ownership in terms of stability for development, economic gain, and increased civic spirit. The study finds that publicly owned teams can be successfully used to anchor comprehensive plans for economic development, and that public ownership provides a way to pay the costs of the sports facilities and the debt service. There is little evidence to show that publicly owned teams increase civic spirit. However, this model presents some challenges that may prevent its widespread utilization.     

Does the medium matter? The interaction of task type and technology on group performance and member reactions.

Investigated the hypothesis that as group tasks pose greater requirements for member interdependence, communication media that transmit more social context cues will foster group performance and satisfaction. 72 3-person groups of undergraduates worked in either computer-mediated or face-to-face meetings on 3 tasks with increasing levels of interdependence: an idea-generation task, an intellective task, and a judgment task. Results showed few differences between computer-mediated and face-to-face groups in the quality of the work completed but large differences in productivity favoring face-to-face groups. Analysis of productivity and of members' reactions supported the predicted interaction of tasks and media, with greater discrepancies between media conditions for tasks requiring higher levels of coordination.
