Thin conducting polypyrrole film on insulating surface and its applications

An electrically conductive plastic material was obtained by the polymerization of pyrrole on insulating polymeric materials and nylon cloth impregnated with the oxidant by vapour phase technique, resulting in a uniform, smooth and adherent coating of conducting polymer having a surface resistance ranging from 200 Ω/□ to 20 kΩ/□, which makes it suitable for applications as an antistatic material.     

Implementation of creep-fatigue model into finite element code to assess cooled turbine blade

Turbine blades which are designed with airfoil cooling are subject to thermo-mechanical fatigue as well as creep damage. These problems arise due to thermal cycling and high operating temperatures in service. An implementation of fatigue and creep damage models into a finite element code is presented. The implementation was designed to be practical and streamlined, as the damage models used require a minimum of materials testing; and by integrating all the code into an existing finite element package, there is no need to search through or transfer large amounts of output data in order to assess results.

BID: a novel BH3 domain-only death agonist

The BCL-2 family of proteins consists of both antagonists (e.g., BCL-2) and agonists (e.g., BAX) that regulate apoptosis and compete through dimerization. The BH1 and BH2 domains of BCL-2 are required to heterodimerize with BAX and to repress cell death; conversely, the BH3 domain of BAX is required to heterodimerize with BCL-2 and to promote cell death. To extend this pathway, we used interactive cloning to identify Bid, which encodes a novel death agonist that heterodimerizes with either agonists (BAX) or antagonists (BCL-2). BID possesses only the BH3 domain, lacks a carboxy-terminal signal-anchor segment, and is found in both cytosolic and membrane locations. BID counters the protective effect of BCL-2. Moreover, expression of BID, without another death stimulus, induces ICE-like proteases and apoptosis. Mutagenesis revealed that an intact BH3 domain of BID was required to bind the BH1 domain of either BCL-2 or BAX. A BH3 mutant of BID that still heterodimerized with BCL-2 failed to promote apoptosis, dissociating these activities. In contrast, the only BID BH3 mutant that retained death promoting activity interacted with BAX, but not BCL-2. This BH3-only molecule supports BH3 as a death domain and favors a model in which BID represents a death ligand for the membrane-bound receptor BAX.     

Synthesis of (R,S)-10-methyloctadecanoic acid (tuberculostearic acid) and key chiral 2-methyl branched intermediates

Tuberculostearic acid, (R)-10-methyloctadecanoic acid, is a characteristic component of pathogenic mycobacteria and related organisms. Sensitive detection of this acid in infected material allows rapid detection of mycobacterial disease. A novel, convergent synthesis of tuberculostearic acid and key chiral intermediates is described in this communication, to provide a reference compound. Racemic and (R)- and (S)-1-iodo-2-methyldecanes were synthesised from 1-octanal and 1-carboethoxyethylidenetriphenylphosphorane as initial starting materials. 1-Hydroxyoct-7-yne was made from 1,6-hexanediol by two alternative methods and coupled with the above racemic iodide. Hydrogenation and oxidation of the resulting (R,S)-10-methyloctadec-7-yn-1-ol gave racemic tuberculostearic acid.     

THE LINEAR NORMALIZATION TECHNIQUE—AN ALTERNATIVE PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING J-R CURVES FROM A SINGLE SPECIMEN TEST RECORD BASED ON LANDES' NORMALIZATION METHOD

An alternative approach for determining J-R curves from a single specimen test based on the normalization technique is proposed. The procedure requires only the load versus load-line displacement record and the final crack length in order to derive the J-R curve. The method has been applied to metal and polymers of various geometries and was verified by comparison with J-R curves obtained from potential drop and multiple specimen techniques.
