Analysis of the headspace volatiles of freshly brewed arabica coffee using solid-phase microextraction

ABSTRACT:  Headspace volatiles of freshly brewed drip coffee were investigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography/olfactometry (GC/O, CharmAnalysis™) analyses. For this purpose, a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) sampling method for the headspace volatiles of freshly brewed drip coffee was developed. SPME fiber coated with divinylbenzene (DVB)/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was selected from 6 types, and sampling time was determined at 2 min. The headspace coffee volatiles stayed constant in proportion for the first 2 min to keep the freshness of the brewed coffee aroma. Using this sampling method, the headspace volatiles of freshly brewed drip coffee (Ethiopian arabica coffee, roast degree: L value; 23) were examined by GC/MS and GC/O analyses. From the GC/O results, 1-(3,4-dihydro-2 H -pyrrol-2-yl)-ethanone (nutty-roast odor) and 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone (raspberry ketone, sweet-fruity odor) were newly detected as components in the aroma of coffee.     

Influence of γ Irradiation on the Mechanical Strength and In Vitro Biodegradation of Porous Hydroxyapatite/Collagen Composite

Gamma irradiation treatment (GIT) is the most widely used sterilization method for biomaterials in spite of the potential to degrade polymers. The adverse effects of GIT on the mechanical properties and biological stabilities of porous hydroxyapatite/collagen (HAp/Col) composites were investigated in this study. Those properties of a porous HAp/Col composite stabilized by dehydrothermal treatment (DHT) drastically decreased by GIT in the same manner as conventional pure Col materials. DHT after GIT could partially eliminate the adverse effects, due to the introduction of cross-linkage among the degraded Col molecules.     

Application of an electron backscatter diffraction pattern to Cu damascene-fabricated interconnections filled by a high-pressure anneal process

The microstructure of Cu interconnections fabricated by high-pressure annealing was evaluated using a field emission scanning electron microscope/electron backscatter diffraction pattern (FE-SEM/EBSP) technique, and the results are compared with as-deposited and normally annealed Cu films. The results show some grains extending from the bulk field to the via regions in the case of the high-pressure annealed Cu films. The existence of via holes was also observed, in which all grains were (111) oriented. This indicates that the high-pressure annealing process enables the Cu that in-fills the via holes to develop into favorable microstructures, i.e., single-crystal and with (111) orientation.     

TETHER-LINKED [60]FULLERENE-DONOR DYADS

A series of [60]fullerene bis-adducts having a π-electron-rich aromatic ring as a donor in a face-to-face arrangement were synthesized by the bis-cyclopropanation of [60]fullerene with tether-linked bis-malonates. One of the bis-adducts showed a photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer which caused the dramatic quenching of its fluorescence in a polar solvent.     

Acute transformation of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia with t(1;3) (p36;q21) abnormality

A 66-year-old man was given a peripheral blood test because of low grade fever. Leukocytosis was detected, and the blood and bone marrow findings were consistent with those of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. Three months later the hematological findings were: WBC 58,800/microliter (19% blastoid cells, 22% monocytes), Hb 9.0 g/dl, and a platelet count of 116 x 10(4)/microliters. A bone marrow examination revealed the presence of 52.6% blastoid cells and dysmegakaryocytopoiesis, including micromegakaryocytes. Serum and urinary lysozyme levels were elevated. Karyotypic analysis detected t(1; 3) (p36;q21), but not major bcr/abl mRNA. The patient was given a diagnosis of acute transformation of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. Despite treatment, he died about 3 months later. t(1;3) is occasionally observed in cases of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and leukemia. Patients with t(1;3) often exhibit dysmegakaryocytopoiesis; furthermore, acute leukemia develops more readily in those who also have MDS. Cases of long-term survival are rare.     

Realtime network management support systems at NTT

This paper describes realtime network management support systems which have been developed forntt’s telephone network. In particular, the advanced traffic observation and management information collecting system referred to as Atomics and the traffic congestion control system referred to astcs are presented. The purpose of the development, concept, functions and capabilities of each system are explained. Examples of powerful realtime network management supported by Atomics andTSC are also presented.     

Negative dispersion-flattened fibre suitable for 10 Gbit/s directly-modulated signal transmission in whole telecommunication band

New dispersion-flattened fibres having negative dispersion of about -8 ps/nm/km over the whole telecommunication band are developed. Transmissions with 10 Gbit/s directly modulated LDs over 51 km at 1275 nm and over 80 km at 1550 nm are realised without dispersion compensation.     

Incidence of urolithiasis in northeast Thailand

We performed an anterior spinal fusion using a vascularized fibular bone graft combined with posterior fusion for a patient with severe cervical kyphosis due to neurofibromatosis. The kyphosis was corrected from 85 degrees preoperatively to 38 degrees postoperatively. A vascularized fibular bone graft is a useful surgical procedure in selected patients to obtain successful bony union.
