Absence of p53 deletions in bone marrow plasma cells of patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance

We have recently shown that presence of a p53 deletion in multiple myleoma is an independent predictor for short survival. We therefore investigated whether or not this chromosomal abnormality can be identified in patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Using a triple staining method combining staining for cytoplasmic immunoglobulins and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with chromosome 17-centromere and p53-gene specific probes, we studied plasma cells from 15 patients with MGUS. In all patients, concordant signal numbers with both probes were obtained (including one patient with trisomy 17), indicating that allelic loss of p53 does not occur in MGUS.     

Effects of behavioral marital therapy on couples' communication and problem-solving skills.

Videotaped 55 couples' (mean age 33.5 yrs) interacting and coded discussions of problem areas. 29 couples were being treated with behavioral marital therapy, 14 couples were in a waiting-control group, and 12 were nondistressed couples. Analysis showed that treated couples had significantly more positive and less negative behaviors than the control couples. The interaction patterns of treated Ss resembled the pattern exhibited by the nondistressed couples. However, it was also found that treated Ss appeared to react to aversive stimuli from their spouses. It is suggested that behavioral observation is valuable in improving therapeutic interventions on an empirical basis. (43 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Nonlinearity-insensitive standard-fibre transmission based onoptical-phase conjugation in a semiconductor-laser amplifier

Experimental results are presented confirming that optical-phase conjugation in a semiconductor-laser amplifier has the potential to compensate for the interplay of chromatic dispersion and nonlinear self-phase modulation, thereby enabling high-capacity high-power transmission over standard singlemode fibres

Zusammenfassung Zwecks Berechnung der Kräfte, die eine keilförmige Unebenheit im Luftspalt erfährt, wurde das betrachtete Luftspaltgebiet konform auf die obere Hälfte der -Ebene abgebildet. Dabei wurden die Pole in der -Ebene so festgelegt, daß die Ausführung der Integration des Abbildungsdifferentials entlang der hochpermeablen Konturen in einfacher Weise hypergeometrische Reihen ergab. Die in der -Ebene vorgenommene Berechnung der Kräfte führte damit auf geschlossene Ausdrücke mit hypergeometrischen Reihen. Dabei wurde in allgemeiner Form nachgewiesen, daß die keilförmige Unebenheit unabhängig von deren Gestalt keine Tangentialkraft erfährt. Die verbleibende NormalkraftK wurde auf die KraftK ₀ bezogen, die auf die Grundfläche des Keiles bei dessen Abwesenheit auf die ebenen Flächen der Luftspaltbegrenzung wirkt. Die in dem gesuchten VerhältnisK/K ₀ auftretenden hypergeometrischen Reihen wurden durch Transformation so umgeformt, daß deren Argumente im Bereich 01 lagen. Dadurch konnte die praktische Kraftberechnung mit wenigen Gliedern der hypergeometrischen Reihen vorgenommen werden. Aufgrund dieser Tatsache wurde auch eine einfache Näherungsbeziehung aufgestellt, die die Berechnung des gesuchten Kraftverhältnisses als Funktion der bezogenen Keilhöhe mit dem Rechenschieber gestattet. Über die Größe der auftretenden Kräfte geben die Diagramme Aufschluß, die einer-seits für einen rechtwinkligen und andererseits für einen symmetrischen Keil angegeben wurden Die gefundenen geschlossenen Beziehungen sind natürlich für alle Keilwinkel und der Eigenschaft 0<, <1/2 gültig, wodurch das gestellte Problem in allgemeinster Form gelöst wurde.     

High-speed temperature measurements during rapid solidification of iron-silicon ribbons,produced by planar flow casting

In order to investigate the melt undercooling and the non-equilibrium solidification of crystalline Fe 5 wt.% Si melt spun ribbons, produced by planar flow casting (PFC), high speed temperature measurements and appropriate process simulations have been performed. Using a rotating fibre optical system with a fast response double pyrometer, the temperature radiation of the solidifying ribbon during the casting process has been recorded with a measuring frequency of 50 kHz. The obtained cooling curves have been interpreted by computer simulations. It is shown that with increasing wheel temperature the overall cooling becomes more efficient. This is caused by an improved wetting behaviour of the melt-wheel system and an increase in the heat transfer coefficient at the interface of the solidifying ribbon and the wheel from 6 · 10⁴ to about 2 · 10⁵ W/(m²K). The solidification of 100 to 200 μm thick ribbons takes place in a time interval of 2 to 5 ms. The average growth rate varies between 10 and 60 mm/s. The high cooling rate results in a fine dendritic solidification morphology with diminishing microsegregations.
