To obtain practical information on the electroelastic behavior of poly-l-lactic acid microtweezers or catheters, a previously constructed analytical technique is used to obtain the electroelastic field solution of a poly-l-lactic acid cylindrical fiber exposed to a local electric field, which is applied through an opposed pair of square-sectioned electrodes. The numerical representation of the solution reveals the detailed field quantity distributions, their importance in the design of microtweezers and catheters, the overall deformation of such devices, and the effects of the electrode dimensions on the deformation.  相似文献

Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) is among the most widely used conjugated polymers for opto-electronic applications. To enhance its properties, researchers have attempted to nanostructure this polymer using various processes including breath figure arrays, nanolithography and elaborated organic synthesis. We here demonstrate a simple process to nanostructure the conjugated polymer using self-assembly with polystyrene and selective removal of one of the phases. The influence of the molecular weight of each polymer on the thin film morphology was systematically studied by atomic force microscopy. Using this approach, we observe two types of nanostructure, namely, nanoporous and nanoisland structures, of which the dimensions can be tuned by modifying the molecular weight of each polymer in the blend. This simple process introduces a cost-effective alternative to produce thin films of conjugated polymer with average nano-features from 100 nm up to 500 nm which could be used in a wide range of applications.  相似文献

The structure and rheological properties of binary blends of polycarbonate (PC) and polystyrene (PS) were investigated using various PS samples with different molecular weights, namely PS1k (Mw = 1,000), PS53k (Mw = 53,000), and PS240k (Mw = 240,000). The blends with PS53k and PS240k show phase-separated structures, whereas the blend with PS1k is miscible. The shear viscosity decreases greatly on addition of PS53k and PS240k, especially at high shear rates, which would be a great advantage at processing operations. Because the nonlinear response occurs in the small strain region for multilayered films of PC and PS240k, the origin of the significant viscosity drop for the phase-separated system is interfacial slippage at the phase boundary.  相似文献

Lettuce and spinach are increasingly implicated in foodborne illness outbreaks due to contamination by Escherichia coli O157:H7. While this bacterium has been shown to colonize and survive on lettuce leaf surfaces, little is known about its interaction with the roots of growing lettuce plants. In these studies, a microarray analyses, mutant construction and confocal microscopy were used to gain an understanding of structure and function of bacterial genes involved in the colonization and growth of E. coli O157:H7 on lettuce roots. After three days of interaction with lettuce roots, 94 and 109 E. coli O157:H7 genes were significantly up- and down-regulated at least 1.5 fold, respectively. While genes involved in biofilm modulation (ycfR and ybiM) were significantly up-regulated, 40 of 109 (37%) of genes involved in protein synthesis were significantly repressed. E. coli O157:H7 was 2 logs less efficient in lettuce root colonization than was E. coli K12. We also unambiguously showed that a ΔycfR mutant of E. coli O157:H7 was unable to attach to or colonize lettuce roots. Taken together these results indicate that bacterial genes involved in attachment and biofilm formation are likely important for contamination of lettuce plants with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strains.  相似文献

Processability at extrusion coating and mechanical properties of the films obtained are investigated by means of linear and nonlinear rheological measurements and tensile tests for blends of polypropylene (PP) and linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE). Both materials are produced by metallocene catalyst. The processability of PP is found to be improved by the addition of LLDPE; the blend shows low level of motor torque and head pressure in an extruder and small level of neck‐in as compared with pure PP. Further, the anisotropy of ultimate tensile strength, which is prominent for PP, is reduced by blending with LLDPE. As a result, the blend having 20 wt % of LLDPE shows appropriate properties in the molten state for extrusion coating and in the solid state as a film. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To design a consumer-oriented package that complements the taste and aroma of ready-to-drink chilled-cup coffee beverages by using the food kansei model, the effects of the diameter and the color of drinking straws as well as the cognition terms of coffee on consumer sensory characteristics and preferences were investigated. Variance and factor analyses of the sensory scores for chilled-cup coffee with milk and sugar using straws of different diameters, as rated by consumer panelists, extracted two perceived factors (F1, contribution ratio 36.5%, and F2, 28.6%). A two-dimensional plot of the average F1 and F2 scores of 123 panelists showed that the perceived characteristics of the same taste and aroma varied according to the straw diameter. An image investigation of different straw colors and another sensory evaluation using “black,” “brown,” and “green” straws were also performed. A principal component analysis of the image data revealed that the sensory characteristics of coffee with milk and sugar were imaged from the straw color. The second evaluation suggested that the images of straw colors affected the sensory characteristics. In addition, cluster and multiple-comparison analyses of Internet research data from consumers regarding the cognition terms for coffee exhibited three clusters representing the cognitive characteristics of terms by consumers and by developers and the differences of attractiveness degree on the cognition terms due to the consumers’ personal attributes. These studies provide useful information for the development of packages of chilled-cup coffee beverages.  相似文献

A novel coating material on paperboard and fiberboard from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) modified with Tung oil was developed. The PVA/Tung oil coating was cured at several conditions: 25, 40, 50, and 60°C, in the presence of two types of catalysts, i.e., thermal catalyst using potassium persulfate (KPS) and redox catalyst using KPS and sodium thiosulfate. The chemical crosslinked structure of PVA/Tung oil-coating films was confirmed by FTIR. The result indicated the decrease in the double bonds of Tung oil by crosslinking reaction, especially at 60°C. In comparison with the same curing temperature, the films with redox catalyst showed more reduction in the number of double bonds of Tung oil. DMA results of the PVA/Tung oil-coating materials with redox catalyst showed the lowering of the heights of both β transition peak of Tung oil and α transition peak of PVA. FTIR and DMA results confirmed the more efficient crosslinking reaction of redox catalytic system than that of the thermal catalytic system. The water resistance and mechanical properties of these coating materials exhibited better values as projected to higher curing temperature and redox catalyst. SEM images showed the smooth surface of PVA/Tung oil covered on the paperboards with ~72 µm in thickness. The contact angle of water or oil drop and dynamic change in contact angle on the surfaces of PVA/Tung oil-coated paperboards and fiberboards were investigated. The results show the contact angles for both water and oil were lower than those of the uncoated ones, indicating the improvement of water and oil affinities of the PVA/Tung oil-coating materials. The dynamic changes in contact angle of the coated ones also decreased, suggesting the reduction in water and oil absorption rates of these coated substrates.  相似文献

Dysprosium-doped glasses were prepared in the system of gallium-based sulfide, tellurite, zirconium-baed and indium-based fluorides and their optical properties were studied. From the absorption cross sections of five f-f bands, three Judd-Ofelt parameters, ω t ( t = 2, 4, 6), of Dy3+ ion were determined. The compositional variaton of the ω2value showed the order sulfide > tellurite > fluorozirconate > fluoroindate, whereas the ω6 value showed the opposite tendency. Compositional variaton of the fluorescence intensity ratio of the (4F9/26H13/2)/(4F9/2)→6H15/2) is explained by the ratio of ω26 of doped Dy3+. The emission probabilities A and the branching ratio β from 6H9/2 and 6F11/2 levels, which are the doublet initial level of the 1.3 μm luminescence, were calculated for the glasses, and it was found that both values showed a tendency similar to that of ω2 against the glass composition. In the sulfide glass, A was 2.6 × 103S-1 and β was 93%, both the highest in all of the glasses investigated. By 1.06 μm pumping of a Nd: YAG laser, the sulfide glass showed strong 1.3 μm emission and the lifetime was 25 μs, resulting in a quantum efficiency of 7%. This value is higher than that of the Pr3+:1G4 level in ZBLAN glass with β= 60%.  相似文献

Heat and mass transfer with electrochemical reaction in an anode-supported flat-tube solid oxide fuel cell (FT-SOFC) is studied by means of three-dimensional numerical simulation. The distributions of the reaction fields in the anode-supported FT-SOFC are found to be similar to those in the planar SOFC with co-flow arrangement. However, in comparison with the latter, the concentration and activation overpotentials of the former can be reduced by additional reactant diffusion through the porous rib of the fuel channel. Parametric survey reveals that, for a fixed activation overpotential model, the output voltage can be improved by increasing the pore size of anode, while the cross-sectional geometry has smaller effect on the cell performance. Based on the results of three-dimensional simulation, we also develop a simplified numerical model of anode-supported FT-SOFC, which takes into account the concentration gradients in the thick anode of complex cross-sectional geometry. The simplified model can sufficiently predict the output voltage as well as the distributions of temperature and current density with very low computational cost. Thus, it can be used as a powerful tool for surveying wide range of anode-supported FT-SOFC design parameters.  相似文献
