Incomplete urethral obstruction associated with dilatation of the urethra, cystitis, and pyelonephritis in a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig

A sporadic case of trilateral retinoblastoma in a male child of 20 months is described using clinical and imaging approaches. Attempts were made to find out a tumour marker by analysing human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), alpha-feto protein (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Only LDH was elevated in CSF and the rest were normal. Retinoblastoma gene could not be isolated in this patient. It is proposed that LDH in CSF should be analysed in patients with bilateral retinoblastoma who had normal brain scan initially. If LDH level in CSF is elevated, the patient should be periodically monitored by non-invasive imaging of the brain to detect intracranial tumour at an early stage.     

Microcirculation and hemostasis in inflammatory processes. Modulation by administration of physiologic protease inhibitors as a therapeutic approach

BACKGROUND: The course of an inflammatory process is based upon complex interactions between the vessel wall and the humoral or cellular compounds of the vascular content as a consequence of a defense reaction. There are no substantial differences between the pathophysiology of local or of whole body inflammation on the molecular and cellular level. Sepsis, which is clinically regarded as a systemic inflammatory process requires the broad therapeutical spectrum of nowaday intensive care medicine, but still has a high mortality. The pathophysiology and clinical examples for both systemic and local inflammatory reactions are presented in this paper. Thereby, similar interactions between the vascular endothelium, the mediator systems to which the hemostatic system has to be considered as a part of, and the microcirculation remain in the foreground at first. Based on that, the use of polyvalent protease inhibitors in the therapy of local or systemic inflammatory reactions of different origin will be discussed. The spotlight falls on physiological inhibitors of the hemostatic and complement system, antithrombin III and C1-esterase inhibitor, which may have a regulatory function within these systems because of their multiple targets. CONCLUSION: The possibility of an adjuvant therapy of local or generalized inflammatory processes with physiologic protease inhibitors seems to be very promising. Nevertheless, at yet the substantial mechanisms of action are not fully understood.     

Efficacy of miconazole nitrate against favus in oriental breed chickens

Miconazole nitrate 2% was tested for its efficacy against Microsporum gallinae (the causative agent in favus) in a flock of various Oriental breed (Shamo and Aseel) and crossbreed chickens. Six adult males showing clinical signs of favus were randomized into control and experimental groups. The males were maintained on individual tiecords on the range, with no physical contact between birds. The experimental birds had the affected areas washed with soap and water and dried, and an ointment of miconazole nitrate 2% was applied. The experimental birds received the treatment twice a day for 34 days. Scrapings from the affected areas of all birds were cultured at the beginning and end of the test. At the end of the treatment period, the control birds were still positive for M. gallinae, but the organism could not be cultured from the treated birds.     

An antiviral protein from Bougainvillea spectabilis roots; purification and characterisation

An antiviral protein active against mechanical transmission of tomato spotted wilt virus was identified in the root tissues of Bougainvillea spectabilis Willd. Bougainvillea Antiviral Protein I (BAP I) was purified to apparent homogeneity from the roots of Bougainvillea by ammonium sulphate precipitation, CM- and DEAE-Sepharose chromatography and reverse phase HPLC. BAP I is a highly basic protein (pI value > 8.6) with an Mr of 28,000. The N-terminal sequence of BAP I showed homology with other plant antiviral proteins. Preliminary tests suggest that purified BAP I is capable of interfering with in vitro protein synthesis.     

1.8 Gbit/s 65 km optical transmission experiment using a 1.478 ?m DFB laser and Ge APD receiver

A 1.8 Gbit/s optical transmission system trial has been conducted over 65 km of conventional monomode fibre using a 1.478 ?m DFB laser and p+n Ge APD receiver. Using a 215 ?1, NRZ, PRB test sequence, a long-term BER of 2×10?10 was achieved. Dispersive effects introduced a 1 dB penalty after 65 km transmission.
