The aricle presents the results of a research performed in order to establish whether drying lumber from frozen state (in winter) has repercussions upon its properties, compared to drying under the same conditions lumber parts originating from the same log and position within the log section but that were not frozen prior to drying. To this purpose, spruce (Picea abies L.) lumber specimens, 35 mm and 55 mm thick, cut from the same log, half frozen at - 30°C and half unfrozen, were dried under the same conditions in a climate chamber. Some mechanical properties (hardness, bending strength, and modulus elasticity in static bending), as well as workability (expressed by means of the absorbed power and specific resistance to cutting during milling), were determined The results revealed slight differences between the frozen and the unfrozen samples both during the drying process and afterwards. It was noticed that a significant amount of water was removed from wood during the very beginning of the heating phase (thawing). With regards to wood properties after drying, a slight lowering of the mechanical properties and better workability could be established for the initially frozen samples.  相似文献

We present two methods for efficiently sampling the response (trajectory space) of multibody systems operating under spatial uncertainty, when the latter is assumed to be representable with Gaussian processes. In this case, the dynamics (time evolution) of the multibody systems depends on spatially indexed uncertain parameters that span infinite‐dimensional spaces. This places a heavy computational burden on existing methodologies, an issue addressed herein with two new conditional sampling approaches. When a single instance of the uncertainty is needed in the entire domain, we use a fast Fourier transform technique. When the initial conditions are fixed and the path distribution of the dynamical system is relatively narrow, we use an incremental sampling approach that is fast and has a small memory footprint. Both methods produce the same distributions as the widely used Cholesky‐based approaches. We illustrate this convergence at a smaller computational effort and memory cost for a simple non‐linear vehicle model. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An important parameter in normalizing activities of porous electrocatalysts is real surface area of the catalyst. In this study CO stripping voltammetry was applied for the determination of the surface area of PtRu catalysts in a membrane electrode assembly. The difficulties in applying this method are summarized and a practical solution for the “accurate” voltammetric CO charge determination is suggested. The influence of adsorption time, potential, sweeping range and sweep rate on voltammetric CO charge determination is studied. It is shown that the CO charge determined in this way is independent on the sweep rate applied.  相似文献

Despite the technological progress of the last decade, dental caries is still the most frequent oral health threat in children and adults alike. Such a condition has multiple triggers and is caused mainly by enamel degradation under the acidic attack of microbial cells, which compose the biofilm of the dental plaque. The biofilm of the dental plaque is a multispecific microbial consortium that periodically develops on mammalian teeth. It can be partially removed through mechanical forces by individual brushing or in specialized oral care facilities. Inhibition of microbial attachment and biofilm formation, as well as methods to strengthen dental enamel to microbial attack, represent the key factors in caries prevention. The purpose of this study was to elaborate a cold plasma-based method in order to modulate microbial attachment and biofilm formation and to improve the retention of fluoride (F) in an enamel-like hydroxyapatite (HAP) model sample. Our results showed improved F retention in the HAP model, which correlated with an increased antimicrobial and antibiofilm effect. The obtained cold plasma with a dual effect exhibited through biofilm modulation and enamel strengthening through fluoridation is intended for dental application, such as preventing and treating dental caries and enamel deterioration.  相似文献

Biofilms formed by fungal organisms are associated with drastically enhanced resistance against most antimicrobial agents, contributing to the persistence of the fungi despite antifungal therapy. The purpose of this study is to combine the unique properties of nanoparticles with the antimicrobial activity of the Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil in order to obtain a nanobiosystem that could be pelliculised on the surface of catheter pieces, in order to obtain an improved resistance to microbial colonization and biofilm development by Candida albicans and C. tropicalis clinical strains. The R. officinalis essential oils were extracted in a Neo-Clevenger type apparatus, and its chemical composition was settled by GC-MS analysis. Functionalized magnetite nanoparticles of up to 20 nm size had been synthesized by precipitation method adapted for microwave conditions, with oleic acid as surfactant. The catheter pieces were coated with suspended core/shell nanoparticles (Fe3O4/oleic acid:CHCl3), by applying a magnetic field on nanofluid, while the CHCl3 diluted essential oil was applied by adsorption in a secondary covering treatment. The fungal adherence ability was investigated in six multiwell plates, in which there have been placed catheters pieces with and without hybrid nanoparticles/essential oil nanobiosystem pellicle, by using culture-based methods and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The R. officinalis essential oil coated nanoparticles strongly inhibited the adherence ability and biofilm development of the C. albicans and C. tropicalis tested strains to the catheter surface, as shown by viable cell counts and CLSM examination. Due to the important implications of Candida spp. in human pathogenesis, especially in prosthetic devices related infections and the emergence of antifungal tolerance/resistance, using the new core/shell/coated shell based on essential oil of R. officinalis to inhibit the fungal adherence could be of a great interest for the biomedical field, opening new directions for the design of film-coated surfaces with antibiofilm properties.  相似文献

Vitamin D deficiency is still a common problem particularly in the elderly and in individuals with various degrees of renal impairment. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D and death in a large cohort of prevalent patients on hemodialysis (HD) from south‐east Romania, a typical Balkan region. This is an observational prospective study that included a total of 570 patients on maintenance HD. Study patients were classified into three groups by baseline 25(OH)D levels: (1) sufficient 25(OH)D—i.e., >30 ng/mL; (2) insufficient 25(OH)D—i.e., between 10 and 29 ng/mL; and (3) deficient 25(OH)D—i.e., <10 ng/mL. During the follow‐up period of 14 months, 68 patients (11.9%) died, the Kaplan–Meier analysis showing significant differences in all‐cause mortality for chronic kidney disease patients in different 25(OH)D groups (P = 0.002). Unadjusted Cox regression analysis also showed significant differences in survival. The multivariate Cox regression model showed no significant differences in survival according to vitamin D levels. Hazard ratio for death in the “<10 ng/mL” group was 1.619 (P = 0.190) and in the “10–30 ng/mL” group was 0.837 (P = 0.609). In our dialysis population with a high comorbidity burden, low 25(OH)D concentration was not associated with mortality in the adjusted Cox model, suggesting that vitamin D deficiency could represent only a non‐specific marker for a poor health status, with less impact on mortality.  相似文献
