Peltier-Cooled and Actively Quenched Operation of InGaAs/InP Avalanche Photodiodes as Photon Counters at a 1.55-mum Wavelength

The performance of commercially available InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes as single-photon detectors at a 1.55-mum wavelength has been investigated. A new active quenching and gating circuit, tailored for operation of these diodes at temperatures in the range from room temperature to -60 degrees C and achievable by means of thermoelectrical cooling, has been developed. Careful tuning of the diodes' operating conditions resulted in a significant reduction of afterpulsing effects; it permitted operation of the detectors with high repetition rates. A noise-equivalent power of 7 x 10(-16) W/Hz(1/2) was obtained at a 1.55-mum wavelength.     

Multicenter trial of fluoxetine as an adjunct to behavioral smoking cessation treatment.

The authors evaluated the efficacy of fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac; Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis, IN) as an adjunct to behavioral treatment for smoking cessation. Sixteen sites randomized 989 smokers to 3 dose conditions: 10 weeks of placebo, 30 mg, or 60 mg fluoxetine per day. Smokers received 9 sessions of individualized cognitive-behavioral therapy, and biologically verified 7-day self-reported abstinence follow-ups were conducted at 1, 3, and 6 months posttreatment. Analyses assuming missing data counted as smoking observed no treatment difference in outcomes. Pattern-mixture analysis that estimates treatment effects in the presence of missing data observed enhanced quit rates associated with both the 60-mg and 30-mg doses. Results support a modest, short-term effect of fluoxetine on smoking cessation and consideration of alternative models for handling missing data. Cascading of Distortion in CATV Trunk Line

The second-and third-order distortion buildup in a CATV repeater system is analyzed by means of the Volterra series expansion of the output signal in terms of the input signal. Expressions for cascaded distortion products are given in terms of the single amplifier distortion product and the low frequency phase intercepts of the amplifier, cable equalizer, and cable itself. From these expressions it is also seen that the low-frequency phase intercepts are the dominant factors in determining the cascaded distortion. Conditions for cancellation of either the second-or third-order distortion products are then given.     

Hertzian analysis of the self-consistency and reliability of the indentation hardness measurements on superhard nanocomposite coatings

The measurement of elastic properties of superhard nanocomposite coatings can be subject to a number of possible errors, such as indentation size effects (indenter tip blunting, non-representative small volume of the material to be tested upon nanoindentation and a too small stress under the indenter which does not reach the yield stress of that material if a too low load is used), the composite effect of the system of superhard coating on a softer substrate, high compressive or tensile stress in the coatings, drifts and/or stiffness of the indenter etc. We shall present a systematic study of these possible artefacts on superhard coatings using a large range of applied loads on a number of super- and ultrahard samples. The hardness values obtained from the indentation measurements are compared with the Vickers hardness calculated from the projected area of the plastic deformation. The data will be also compared with finite element method computer modeling in order to obtain a deeper insight into the complex problems. It will be shown that reliable results can be obtained if sufficiently thick coatings are used which allows one to obtain load independent values of hardness measured at sufficiently large indentation depths. Hertzian analysis of the non-linear elastic response upon unloading provides analytical solutions that can be used in order to check if the hardness values measured on the super- and ultrahard coatings are self-consistent. In particular, it is possible to estimate the maximum tensile stress that the coatings survive without failure. This stress occurs at the periphery of the contact between the coating and the indenter and, in the case of ultrahard coatings, it can reach values in the range of tens of GPa. The results show a very good agreement with the theoretical predictions based on the Universal Binding Energy Relation.     

Molecular cloning and characterization of Porphyromonas gingivalis lysine-specific gingipain. A new member of an emerging family of pathogenic bacterial cysteine proteinases

The proteinases of Porphyromonas gingivalis are key virulence factors in the etiology and progression of periodontal disease. Previous work in our laboratories resulted in the purification of arginine- and lysine-specific cysteine proteinases, designated gingipains, that consist of several tightly associated protein subunits. Recent characterization of arginine-specific gingipain-1 (gingipain R1; RGP-1) revealed that the sequence is unique and that the protein subunits are initially translated as a polyprotein encoding a proteinase domain and multiple adhesin domains (Pavloff, N., Potempa, J., Pike, R. N., Prochazka, V., Kiefer, M. C., Travis, J., and Barr, P. J. (1995) J. Biol. Chem. 270, 1007-1010). We now show that the lysine-specific gingipain (gingipain K; KGP) is also biosynthesized as a polyprotein precursor that contains a proteinase domain that is 22% homologous to the proteinase domain of RGP-1 and multiple adhesin domains. This precursor is similarly processed at distinct sites to yield active KGP. The key catalytic residues in the proteinase domain of KGP are identical to those found in RGP-1, but there are significant differences elsewhere within this domain that likely contribute to the altered substrate specificity of KGP. Independent expression of the proteinase domain in insect cells has shown that KGP does not require the presence of the adhesin domains for correct folding to confer proteolytic activity.     

Molecular cloning and structural characterization of the Arg-gingipain proteinase of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Biosynthesis as a proteinase-adhesin polyprotein

The identification of proteinases of Porphyromonas gingivalis that act as virulence factors in periodontal disease has important implications in the study of host-pathogen interactions as well as in the discovery of potential therapeutic and immunoprophylactic agents. We have cloned and characterized a gene that encodes the 50-kDa cysteine proteinase gingipain or Arg-gingipain-1 (RGP-1) described previously (Chen, Z., Potempa, J., Polanowski, A., Wikstrom, M., and Travis, J. (1992) J. Biol. Chem. 267, 18896-18901). Analysis of the amino acid sequence of RGP-1 deduced from the cloned DNA sequence showed that the biosynthesis of this proteinase involves processing of a polyprotein that contains multiple adhesin molecules located at its carboxyl terminus. This finding corroborates previous evidence (Pike R., McGraw, W., Potempa, J., and Travis, J. (1994) J. Biol. Chem. 269, 406-411) that RGP-1 is closely associated with adhesin molecules, and that high molecular weight forms of the proteinase are involved in the binding of erythrocytes.     

Periodic receiving broad-band antenna arrays

The principle of the periodic receiving antenna array composed of arbitrary antenna units has been developed. A generalization of the well-known principle of log-periodic antennas is presented and applied also to antenna units formed by the system of dipoles with active networks. This reveals the potentialities for the exploitation of this principle in the miniaturization of directional antenna systems.     

Longitudinal mixing in reciprocating and pulsed sieve-plate column-single phase flow

Longitudinal mixing in reciprocating and pulsed sieve-plate columns has been investigated for single-phase flow and is described by a model in which both back-mixing between stages and axial mixing within stages is considered. The model proposed expresses the effect of the amplitude, frequency, flow-rates, distance between trays, their fractional free area and hole size on longitudinal mixing. The relations proposed have been verified by experiments, and the values of the constants in the correlation have been determined.     

Longitudinal mixing in a vibrating-sieve-plate column two-phase flow

Longitudinal mixing in the continuous phase of a vibrating-plate extractor was examined. Particular attention was focused on the effect of the flow of the dispersed phase, which turned out to be of major importance. Three regimes displaying distinctly different character of longitudinal mixing may be observed. The flow within a stage was studied in detail and it was shown that the stage could split into two regions of different character of the flow. A model was proposed which makes up the total effect of longitudinal mixing from the back flow through the plate plus axial dispersion within the stage. Correlations have been proposed relating the axial dispersion coefficient to the hold-up and droplet diameter.     

Stability of Si3N4 and Liquid Phase(s) During Sintering

Advanced sintering techniques for consolidation of Si₃N₄ powders in the presence of an oxygen-rich liquid phase(s) require high temperatures and usually high nitrogen pressures. A stability diagram is constructed for Si₃N₄ as a function of the partial pressures of nitrogen (P_N2) and silicon (P_Si). High P_N2 (20 to 100 atm) increases the stability of Si₃N₄ and the oxygen-rich liquid phase by reducing the P_Si and P_Si0, respectively. The region of high sinterability is outlined for submicrometer Si₃N₄ powders containing 7 wt% BeSiN₂ and 7 wt% SiO₂ as densification aids .
