Crystallization of Polymer-Derived Silicon Carbonitride at 1873 K under Nitrogen Overpressure

The chemical stability of an amorphous silicon carbonitride ceramic, having the composition 0.57SiC·0.43Si₃N₄·0.49C is studied as a function of nitrogen overpressure at 1873 K. The ceramic suffers a weight loss at p _N2 < 3.5 bar (1 bar = 100 kPa), does not show a weight change from 3.5 to 11 bar, and gains weight above 11 bar. The structure of the ceramic changes with pressure: it is crystalline from 1 to 6 bar, amorphous at ∼10 bar, and is crystalline above ∼10 bar. The weight-loss transition, at 3.5 bar, is in excellent agreement with the prediction from thermodynamic analysis when the activities of carbon, SiC, and Si₃N₄ are set equal to those of the crystalline forms; this implies that the material crystallizes before decomposition. The amorphous to crystalline transition that occurs at ∼10 bar, and which is accompanied by weight gain, is likely to have taken place by a different mechanism. A nucleation and growth reaction with the atmospheric nitrogen is proposed as the likely mechanism. The supersaturation required to nucleate α-Si₃N₄ crystals is calculated to be 30 kJ/mol.     

Hepatic and pancreatic effects of polyenoylphosphatidylcholine in rats with alloxan-induced diabetes

In neonatally allylestrenol treated animals in adult age a single benzpyrene treatment significantly decreases the female and significantly increases the male rat's sexual activity. Three month old females display the negative sexual behavioral effect of neonatal allylestrenol treatment less than the six month old ones. The benzpyrene treatment in adult age decreases the sexual activity of male rats. The experiments call the attention to the modifying effect of perinatal steroid treatments to similar exposure in adult age.

Superior activity of a thromboxane receptor antagonist as compared with aspirin in rat models of arterial and venous thrombosis

We determined the effects of aspirin and a novel thromboxane A2/prostaglandin endoperoxide (TP)-receptor antagonist, BMS-180291, on thrombosis and bleeding times in skin and mesenteric arteries. In anesthetized rats, occlusive thrombosis was induced in the carotid artery by topical application of ferrous chloride and in the vena cava by blood flow stasis combined with either infusion of thromboplastin or hypotonic saline. Aspirin (1, 10, and 50 mg/kg) did not reduce arterial or venous thrombus weight significantly. BMS 180,291 (150 micrograms/kg/min) decreased arterial thrombus weight and hypotonic saline-induced caval thrombus weight by 58 and 57%, respectively. BMS-180291 lacked antithrombotic activity at a lower dose (50 micrograms/kg/min) and failed to inhibit thromboplastin-induced caval thrombosis. BMS-180291 (150 micrograms/kg/min) significantly reduced arterial thrombus weight by 40% when plasma epinephrine concentration was increased to 5 ng/ml. BMS-180291 and aspirin produced increases of only < or = 30% in bleeding times. These results demonstrate that BMS-180291 has antithrombotic activity in experimental aspirin-resistant arterial and venous thrombosis. Both aspirin and BMS-180291 have only modest effects on small artery hemostasis in rats.     

Low-power low-noise active mixers for 5.7 and 11.2 GHz usingcommercially available SiGe HBT MMIC technology

The authors demonstrate the application of a commercially available SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor monolithic microwave integrated circuit technology to active mixers in future communication systems at 5.7 GHz and above. This technology can be used to realise circuits with less than 50 mW power consumption, conversion gains above 15 dB and small double sideband noise figures of 3.6 and 9.4 dB for 5.7 and 11.2 GHz Gilbert cell mixer circuits, respectively     

Estimation of prolongation of hospital stay attributable to nosocomial infections: new approaches based on multistate models

Evaluation of the impact of nosocomial infection on duration of hospital stay usually relies on estimates obtained in prospective cohort studies. However, the statistical methods used to estimate the extra length of stay are usually not adequate. A naive comparison of duration of stay in infected and non-infected patients is not adequate to estimate the extra hospitalisation time due to nosocomial infections. Matching for duration of stay prior to infection can compensate in part for the bias of ad hoc methods. New model-based approaches have been developed to estimate the excess length of stay. It will be demonstrated that statistical models based on multivariate counting processes provide an appropriate framework to analyse the occurrence and impact of nosocomial infections. We will propose and investigate new approaches to estimate the extra time spent in hospitals attributable to nosocomial infections based on functionals of the transition probabilities in multistate models. Additionally, within the class of structural nested failure time models an alternative approach to estimate the extra stay due to nosocomial infections is derived. The methods are illustrated using data from a cohort study on 756 patients admitted to intensive care units at the University Hospital in Freiburg.
