The cost of event-based prospective memory: Salient target events.

Evidence has begun to accumulate showing that successful performance of event-based prospective memory (PM) comes at a cost to other ongoing activities. The current study builds on previous work by examining the cost associated with PM when the target event is salient. Target salience is among the criteria for automatic retrieval of intentions according to the multiprocess view of PM. An alternative theory, the preparatory attentional and memory processes theory, argues that PM performance, including retrieval of the intent, is never automatic and successful performance always will come at a cost to other ongoing activity. The 4 experiments reported here used a salient PM target event. In addition, Experiments 3 and 4 were designed to meet the stringent criteria proposed for automatic retrieval of intentions by multiprocess theory, and, yet, in all 4 experiments, delayed intentions interfered with ongoing task performance. Evidence that induction of tolerance in vivo involves active signaling via a B7 ligand-dependent mechanism: CTLA4-Ig protects V beta 8+ T cells from tolerance induction by the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B

Co-stimulation through CD28 is thought to be necessary for the activation of unprimed CD4+ T cells, which are otherwise rendered tolerant. However, we previously found that CD4+ T cell priming was normal or augmented in mice which overexpressed a soluble form of CTLA4 where co-stimulation through CD28 was abrogated. To investigate this CD4+ T cell response, we exploited the capacity of the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B to stimulate T lymphocytes bearing V beta 8+, which represent approximately 30% of all CD4+ T cells. In litter-mate controls of CTLA4-Ig transgenic mice, immunization with staphylococcal enterotoxin B leads to expansion, followed by deletion of V beta 8+ T cells, and the remaining cells are tolerant when stimulated in vitro. Comparable expansion and deletion of V beta 8 T cells occurs in CTLA4-Ig transgenic mice. However, in contrast to normal mice, the remaining V beta 8+ T cells from CTLA4-Ig transgenic mice are not anergic and remain responsive to superantigen in vitro.     

Dielectric studies of water absorption and desorption in epoxy resins: influence of cure process on behaviour

Little is known about the way in which the chemical structure of an epoxy resin influences its ability to absorb and desorb moisture. This issue is addressed in a study of dicyandiamide‐ and amine‐cured epoxy resins. The dicyandiamide‐cured material will have a significantly lower preponderance of pendant hydroxyl groups than the amine‐cured material and may exhibit different behaviour when exposed to moisture. The uptake and loss of moisture was monitored gravimetrically, using broad band dielectric, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and thickness measurements performed as a function of time at various temperatures. A comparison of the uptake and loss profiles for the first and subsequent cycles indicated significant differences in behaviour attributed to the way in which water can plasticise the matrix. Stresses frozen into the matrix during the cure process are allowed to relax as a consequence of the water hydrating the matrix and create voids and also allow matrix densification. These processes occur during the first hydration cycle and are not reversible. Subsequent hydration and dehydration appear to be reversible after the first hydration cycle. Water in the polymer is distributed between free water which is to be found in microvoids and bound water which is attached to the polymer chain. The amine‐cured epoxy resin which contains pendant hydroxyl groups has a greater capacity for water absorption than the ether‐containing backbone of the dicyandiamide‐cured material. Effects of a single, daily alcoholic beverage on lipid and hemostatic markers of cardiovascular risk

There is substantial epidemiologic data, but limited experimental data, supporting the mortality benefit of low-dose alcohol consumption. A regimen of a single, daily alcoholic beverage was sufficient to increase both high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (4.4%, p = 0.03) and HDL2 (7.7%, p = 0.04) in men and women, but did not significantly affect hemostatic markers of cardiovascular risk.     

Preparing for Critical Infrastructure Breakdowns: The Limits of Crisis Management and the Need for Resilience

Modern societies are widely considered to harbour an increased propensity for breakdowns of their critical infrastructure (CI) systems. While such breakdowns have proven rather rare, Hurricane Katrina has demonstrated the catastrophic consequences of such breakdowns. This article explores how public authorities can effectively prepare to cope with these rare events. Drawing from the literature on crisis and disaster management, we examine the strengths and weaknesses of traditional approaches to crisis preparation and crisis response. We argue that the established ways of organising for critical decision‐making will not suffice in the case of a catastrophic breakdown. In the immediate aftermath of such a breakdown, an effective response will depend on the adaptive behaviour of citizens, front‐line workers and middle managers. In this article, we formulate a set of strategies that enhance societal resilience and identify the strong barriers to their implementation.     

Sesquiterpenes in the frontal gland secretions of nasute soldier termites from New Guinea

In five New GuineaNasutitermes (N. gracilirostris, N. novarumhebridarum, N. torresi, N. triodiae, and an undescribed speciesN. sp.F), we have detected and identified 10 sesquiterpenes. Eight of these compounds (β)-elemene,β-caryophyllene,α-humulene,α-muurolene,γ-selinene,β-selinene, germacrene-A, and γ₂-cadinene) were identified by GC and GC-MS (EI). Two uncommon sesquiterpenes, (5R^*, 7R^*, 10S^*)-selina-4(14),11-diene and (5R^*, 7R^*, 10S^*)-selina-3,11-diene, were identified by GC, GC-MS (EI, CI), GC-FTIR, and mono- and bidimensional NMR. Whereas in most species sesquiterpenes are present in low or trace amounts, inN. novarumhebridarum the sesquiterpenic fraction of soldier frontal gland secretion is equal to that of the monoterpenes.     

A Highlander Hookup Between Psychologists and Physicians.

Discusses the current author's work as a clinical psychologist at a community mental health center (CMHC) located in a village of 500 people in the mountains of western North Carolina. The public's perception, which is often loaded with fears and misinformation, of mental health services in small towns and rural settings is addressed. In the author's particular situation, mental health care is allowed only in a non-mental health setting. The role of the local hospital in the service delivery of the CMCH is considered. Verbal conditioning as a function of experimenter characteristics.

An investigation was conducted to test the hypothesis that differences in the characteristics of experimenters can lead to differential learning effects when the experimental session involves verbal conditioning without awareness. "Two experimenters of different sex and markedly different height, weight, age, appearance, and personality ran separate groups of Ss." Results indicated that "the response 'Good' was reinforcing for the class of behavior consisting of the use of hostile words in sentences. In addition, it was found that the rates of learning for the Ss of the two experimenters differed significantly, with a steeper slope for the female experimenter's group."
