This publication is a case study of the seasonal variability of mine water drainage from the Saint Louis Tunnel (SLT) at the inactive Rico-Argentine mine site located in southwestern Colorado. It is an introductory paper for the two passive water treatment system technology evaluations contained in this issue. Mine water chemistry changes from baseflow to a snowmelt runoff event (SMRE) where snowmelt runoff follows preferential migration pathways to flush acidic weathering products from the upper mine workings to the SLT. Baseflow mine drainage is characterized as circumneutral, with Zn, Cd, Mn, and Ni concentrations primarily in the dissolved form. Dissolved Zn, Mn, Fe, and potentially Cd illustrate equilibrium with carbonate minerals. Total concentrations of Fe, Cu, Pb, and As are primarily in the suspended form and suggest sorption to Fe oxides. Mine water chemistry during the SMRE reflects mixing of circumneutral baseflow waters with more acidic waters flushing the upper mine workings. Geothermal activity provides for a consistently warm mine water discharge from the SLT. The two seasons that provide the most challenge to passive water treatment of SLT mine drainage are the SMRE period and the low flow stage of the Dolores River. Mine water flow and chemistry during SMRE are highly correlated with Dolores River flow and this site conceptual model was and will be used to assist in pilot project evaluation, water treatment system design, monitoring system design, a seasonal compliance approach, and water management.

Conclusions 1. Based on the above discussion it can be concluded that disintegration of mineral raw materials by powerful impact of SHF is promising because disintegration of these materials ensures retention of the original size of the structural units of the mineral as well as fairly good separation into the mineral components. 2. Palladium nanocatalysts supported on surface-oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were prepared by the aqueous solution reduction of PdCl2PdCl2. MWNT have been synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) technique. Pyrolysis of acetylene using a fixed-bed catalytic reactor over rare earth (RE) based AB2AB2 alloy hydride catalyst, obtained through hydrogen decrepitation technique, has been performed to synthesize MWNT. Structural, morphological and vibrational characterizations have been carried out using XRD, SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. In situ electrical resistance measurements for thin films of MWNT obtained by spin coating samples were carried out by two-probe technique in a chamber with provision to introduce known concentration of hydrogen in constant air flow. Investigations of hydrogen sensing properties of Pd–MWNT ensembles have been carried out. The stability of Pd–MWNT thin films after several cycles of adsorption and desorption was studied. The change in electrical resistance due to hydrogen adsorption is reversible, with increase to saturation on exposure to hydrogen gas. The results demonstrate that chemically treated MWNT functionalized with nanostructured Pd show good H2H2 sensing response at room temperature.  相似文献

Temperatures and concentrations of OH radicals in silica generating counterflow oxy-hydrogen diffusion flames are measured using a broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) and a planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques to study thermo-chemical effects of SiCl4 addition to flames. Numerical analysis considering detailed chemical reactions including silica generating reactions is also conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that temperatures decrease in preheated zone due to the increase in specific heat of the gas mixture while the decrease is mitigated in particle formation zone due to the heat release through hydrolysis and oxidation reactions of SiCl4. Also, OH concentrations significantly decrease in silica formation flame, which can be attributed to the consumption of oxidative radicals during the silica generating reactions of SiCl4 and depletion of OH by HCl. The numerical simulation agrees well for flames having relatively low flame temperatures of 1750 K but underestimates the decrease in OH concentration for high temperature flame over 2700 K. The disagreement for the high temperature flames would imply possible OH consumption via direct reactions between OH radicals and silicon chlorides, which is expected to be highly sensitive to temperature.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the effect of industry segment, year, and US region on electricity consumption per employee, per dollar sales, and per square foot of plant area for wood products industries. Data was extracted from the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) database and imported into MS Excel. The extracted dataset was examined for outliers and abnormalities with outliers outside the quantile range 0.5–99.5 dropped from the analysis. A logarithmic transformation was applied to eliminate the skewness of the original data distributions. Correlation measurements indicated a moderate association between the response variables; therefore, a multivariate analysis of variance test was performed to measure the impact of the three factors: industry type, year, and region, simultaneously on all response variables. The results indicated some effect associated with all three factors on the three measures of electricity consumption. Subsequently, univariate ANOVA tests were conducted to determine the levels of the factors that were different. Most levels of industry type were associated with significantly different energy consumption, an expected result since some of the industries are more energy intensive than others. The industries in Standard Industry Code (SIC) 2493 (reconstituted wood products) are the groups with the highest electricity consumption with means of 38,096.28 kWh/employee, 0.86 kWh/sales, and 154.14 kWh/plant area while industries grouped in SIC 2451 (mobile homes) have the smallest consumption with means of 6811.01 kWh/employee, 0.05 kWh/sales, and 9.45 kWh/plant area. Interestingly, differences in regional consumption were found to be linked to the proportion of industry types by region. Data analysis also indicated differences in electricity consumption per employee for the factor year, but for the other response variables, no differences were found. These main results indicate that industries in the wood products sector have different electricity consumption rates depending on the type of manufacturing processes they use. Therefore, industries in this sector can use these comparisons and metrics to benchmark their electricity consumption as well to understand better how electricity costs might vary depending on the region they are located.  相似文献

Mixing effects of hydriding alloys on equilibrium and kinetic properties are studied, and experimental results are presented for the binary mixtures of LaNi5/TiMn1.5, MmNi5/TiMn1.5, MmNi4.8Al0.2/TiMn1.5, and LaNi5/Ti0.8Zr0.2Cr0.8Mn1.2 under isothermal conditions of 30–60°C with 10° intervals. Major known advantages of mixing are to give desirable P-T-C properties, to enhance reaction rate, and to increase the available temperature and pressure ranges. The authors' objective is to provide a method of designing a particular pair of hydride mixtures with increased hydride composition ranges for transferring hydrogen fairly quickly, increasing availability, improving unit performance, and increasing operational flexibility for a given application.  相似文献
