The study evaluates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions performance of future bioethanol systems in Thailand to ascertain whether bioethanol for transport could help the country mitigate a global warming impact. GHG emission factors of bioethanol derived from cassava, molasses, and sugar cane are analyzed using 12 scenarios covering the critical variables possibly affecting the GHG performance, i.e., (1) the possible direct land use change caused by expanding feedstock cultivation areas; (2) types of energy carriers used in ethanol plants; and (3) waste utilization, e.g., biogas recovery and dry distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) production. The assessment reveals that GHG performance of a Thai bioethanol system is inclined to decrease in the long run due to the effects from the expansion of plantation areas to satisfy the deficit of cassava and molasses. Therefore, bioethanol will contribute to the country's strategic plan on GHG mitigation in the transportation sector only if the production systems are sustainably managed, i.e., coal replaced by biomass in ethanol plants, biogas recovery, and adoption of improved agricultural practices to increase crop productivity without intensification of chemical fertilizers. Achieving the year 2022 government policy targets for bioethanol with recommended measures would help mitigate GHG emissions up to 4.6 Gg CO(2)-eq per year. 相似文献

An assessment of net energy and supply potentials was performed to evaluate cassava utilization for fuel ethanol in Thailand. Just recently, the Thai government approved the construction of 12 cassava ethanol plants with the total output of 3.4 million liters per day by the next 2 years (2007 and 2008). The cassava fuel ethanol (CFE) system involves three main segments: cassava cultivation including processing, ethanol conversion, and transportation. All materials, fuels, and human labor inputs to each segment were traced back to the primary energy expense level. Positive Net Energy Value and Net Renewable Energy Value, 8.80 MJ/L and 9.15 MJ/L, respectively, found for the CFE system in Thailand proved that it is energy efficient. Without coproduct energy credits, CFE in Thailand is even more efficient than CFE in China and corn ethanol in the United States. Regarding supply potentials, about 35% of the national cassava production would be used to feed approved CFE factories. A shift of cassava to ethanol fuel rather than its current use for chip/pellet products could be a probable solution. 相似文献

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes specific for tumor-associated antigens are produced by exposing animals to tumor cells and stimulating lymphocytes from animals immunized in vitro with tumor cells and small amounts of interleukin-2 (IL-2). This study was designed to determine whether a fast-growing immunogenic avian sarcoma virus-induced glioma produces primed cytotoxic T lymphocyte precursors during its progression. Lymphocytes from intracerebral glioma-bearing rats generally failed to proliferate in vitro in response to immunization with tumor cells and IL-2 and, when proliferative responses were observed, the lymphocytes were not cytotoxic for glioma cells. However, when the same tumor was growing subcutaneously, lymphocytes proliferated and exhibited glioma-specific cytotoxicity when stimulated in vitro with autologous tumor cells and IL-2. Subcutaneous immunization of intracerebral glioma-bearing rats with tumor cells and adjuvant induced strong cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses. The results demonstrated that, while intracerebral tumor progression itself does not induce an anti-glioma immune response, immune responses to tumor-associated antigens may be induced by systemic immunization of tumor-bearing animals. The results suggest that the immunogenicity of brain tumors is masked by the immunologically privileged status of the brain, not by the induction of generalized immune suppression during tumor progression. 相似文献

Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID) is a poorly recognized cause of malabsorption syndrome in India. Clinicopathological features of five patients with IPSID seen over a two-year period are described. Our data suggest that IPSID is commonly misdiagnosed as intestinal tuberculosis due to lack of awareness and reluctance to obtain small bowel biopsies. Empirical institution of anti-tubercular chemotherapy not only leads to delayed diagnosis but also possibly alters the natural history of the disease, resulting in an intermediate phase of amelioration followed by a terminal phase of lymphomatous transformation. An immunohistochemical study on tissue sections of kidney, lung, liver and spleen from six dogs naturally infected by Dirofilaria immitis was carried out, using a rabbit polyclonal anti-serum against somatic antigen (SA) of adult worms, excretory-secretory products (ES) of adult worms and fraction C3 of complement (Dog C3). Positive immunoreactions were observed on circulating microfilariae when anti-SA and anti-ES were used, but no differences were noted between the two anti-sera. We have developed a new IR chromogenic cross-linker (IRCX) to aid in rapidly distinguishing cross-linked peptides from unmodified species in complex mixtures. By incorporating a phosphate functional group into the cross-linker, one can take advantage of its unique IR absorption properties, affording selective infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) of the cross-linked peptides. In a mock mixture of unmodified peptides and IRCX-cross-linked peptides (intramolecularly and intermolecularly cross-linked), only the peptides containing the IRCX modification were shown to dissociate upon exposure to 50 ms of 10.6-microm radiation. LC-IRMPD-MS proved to be an effective method to distinguish the cross-linked peptides in a tryptic digest of IRCX-cross-linked ubiquitin. A total of four intermolecular cross-links and two dead-end modifications were identified using IRCX and LC-IRMPD-MS. IRMPD of these cross-linked peptides resulted in secondary dissociation of all primary fragment ions containing the chromophore, producing a series of unmodified b- or y-type ions that allowed the cross-linked peptides to be sequenced without the need for collision-induced dissociation. 相似文献
