Intrinsic isotopic C labelling of polyphenols

The intrinsic isotopic labelling of plants with ¹³CO₂ is an effective method to generate highly labelled compounds using photosynthesis and avoiding labour-intensive complex organic syntheses. In this study, the intrinsic isotopic labelling of polyphenols in parsley, spinach and peppermint is shown for the first time. The plants were grown in an atmosphere where ¹²CO₂ was replaced by ¹³CO₂, in order to generate highly labelled compounds. The total content of ¹³C as well as the individual polyphenols were analysed by Isotopic Ratio-MS and HPLC–Iontrap-MSⁿ.     

Influence of Zn2+ doping on the morphotropic phase boundary in lead-free piezoelectric (1 – x)Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-xBaTiO3

A series of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) compositions of (1–x)Na_1/2Bi_1/2TiO₃-xBaTiO₃ (x = 0.05, 0.055, 0.06, 0.065, 0.07), with and without 0.5 mol% Zn-doping was synthesized using the solid-state route. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, dielectric analysis, and electromechanical measurements (piezoelectric d₃₃ coefficient, coupling factor k_p, mechanical quality factor Q_m, and internal bias field E_bias). The increase in the ferroelectric-relaxor transition temperature upon Zn-doping was accompanied by a shift of the MPB toward the Na_1/2Bi_1/2TiO₃-rich side of the phase diagram. Higher tetragonal phase fraction and increased tetragonal distortion were noted for Zn-doped (1 – x)Na_1/2Bi_1/2TiO₃-xBaTiO₃. In addition, ferroelectric hardening and the presence of an internal bias field (E_bias) were observed for all doped compositions. The piezoelectric constant d₃₃ and the coupling coefficient k_p decreased by up to ∼30%, while a 4- to 6-fold increase in Q_m was observed for the doped compositions. Apart from establishing a structure–property correlation, these results highlight the chemically induced shift of the phase diagram upon doping, which is a crucial factor in material selection for optimal performance and commercialization.

Der Einfluß der Luftdichte nach den neuen IEC-Mittelwerten für Kugelfunkenstrecken

Zusammenfassung Aus den neuen IEC-Mittelwerten wird auf Grund von Ähnlichkeitsgesetzen der Einfluß der Luftdichte errechnet. Die FunkenspannungU ist nur in erster Annäherung der Luftdichte proportional. In Wirklichkeit hängt der Einfluß der Luftdichte (Korrektionsfaktork, U=k · U _n ) in verwickelter Weise vom KugeldurchmesserD, von der Schlagweites, von den Potentialen der Kugeln gegen Erde, der Polarität und der Größe der Luftdichte selbst ab. Dies rührt davon her, daß man die Korrektion eigentlich nicht an der Spannung, sondern an den Elektrodenabmessungen (Schlagweite und Kugeldurchmesser) anzubringen hat. Die Funkenspannung ändert sich durchweg weniger als proportional mit der Luftdichte, am wenigsten bei kleinem Verhältniss/D und beliebiger Potentialverteilung und Polarität und bei großem Verhältniss/D und einpoliger Erdung. Dazwischen liegt eine Stelle, bei der sich der Funkenspannungsverlauf am meisten der Proportionalität mit der Luftdichte nähert. Diese Stelle (Minimum vonk bei < 1) stimmt mit der Stelle des Minimums der Durchbruchfeldstärke überein, wie überhaupt der Verlauf vonk dem Verlauf der Durchbruchfeldstärke auch bezüglich der Abhängigkeit vons/D, D, dem Potentialverlauf und der Polarität ähnelt.Bei symmetrischer Spannungsverteilung an den Polen überwiegt oberhalb vons=0,5 cm der Einfluß des Kugeldurchmessers, so daß es berechtigt ist, Korrektionsfaktorenk nach Tafel 4 aufzustellen, die nur vonD und von abhängen.Auch bei gestörter Funkenstrecke (Käfigfunkenstrecke) gelten die Ahnlichkeitsgesetze, dagegen nicht mehr bei Auftreten von Vorentladungen, insbesondere bei Stoßspannungen.Die auf Grund von Meßwerten (IEC-Mittelwerte) bestimmte Luftdichtenabhängigkeit wird mit Angaben von Peek und Ver Planck verglichen, die beide nicht von Meßwerten, sondern von Formeln abgeleitet und daher, insbesondere bei Ver Planck, nicht genau sind.     

UV screen progenitors. Thermally labile urethane derivatives of hydroxyphenylbenzotriazoles and hydroxybenzophenones

UV-curable formulations do not UV cure when hydroxybenzophenone or hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole UV screens are added to them. Reaction of these UV screens with alkyl or aryl isocyanates gives urethane derivatives in high yields. These derivatives do not impede UV cures when they are incorporated in UV-curable formulations at relatively high levels (3%–5%). After completion of the UV cure, the urethane derivatives are catalytically decomposed by heating to regenerate the corresponding UV screen within the cured coating.     

Degree of stability of geodesic domes with independent loading parameters

Solution techniques and guidelines for convergence and error controls are presented for static and dynamic stability investigations of imperfection-sensitive reticulated space structures. The structure may be subjected to independent loading parameters and finite disturbances. The state of stability investigations of reticulated space structures is briefly described and reflected by the references cited. The determination of the static stability parameters including the degree of stability of equilibrium, which forms the basis of a sufficient condition of dynamic stability, is illustrated for a geodesic dome model.     

CONDOMINIO—background history of the design for a community-living centre within a given climate

The practical example discussed in this paper illustrates that a heightened awareness of climate-adapted building directs the architect and the client to new concepts and architectural products.The project was to produce, on a private lot within a given climate, a form of architecture which would guarantee sufficient privacy but also provide a separate social area outdoors. This aim was achieved by establishing important and necessary climatic measures during the design stage, and by systematically improving the disadvantages as they arose. By simple changes in the orientations of the objective and intentional adaptation to the climate, a suitable solution, sociologically and economically has been obtained.     

Tunneling CNTFETs

Based on the non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism we numerically studied gate-controlled tunneling carbon nanotube field-effect transistors. The effect of doping concentration on the performance of the device has been investigated. We show that an asymmetric doping profile can improve the I _on/I _off ratio of the device improves.
