Radiocarbon analysis of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from three background areas in Sweden, Croatia, and Greece was performed to apportion their origin between fossil and biomass combustion. Diagnostic ratios of PAHs implied that wood and coal combustion was relatively more important in the northern European site, while combustion of fossil fuels was the dominant source of PAHs to the two central-southern European background sites. The radiocarbon content (delta14C) of atmospheric PAHs in Sweden ranged between -388 per thousand and -381 per thousand, while more depleted values were observed for Greece (-914 per thousand) and Croatia (-888 per thousand). Using a 14C isotopic mass balance model it was calculated that biomass burning contributes nearly 10% of the total PAH burden in the studied southern European atmosphere with fossil fuel combustion making up the 90% balance. In contrast, biomass burning contributes about 50% of total PAHs in the atmosphere at the Swedish site. Our results suggest that the relative contributions of biomass burning and fossil fuels to atmospheric PAHs may differ considerably between countries, and therefore, different national control strategies might be needed if a further reduction of these pollutants is to be achieved on a continental-global scale. 相似文献

A colorectal adenoma, an aberrantly growing tissue, arises from the intestinal epithelium and is considered as precursor of colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we investigated structural and numerical chromosomal aberrations in adenomas, hypothesizing that chromosomal instability (CIN) occurs early in adenomas. We applied array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) to fresh frozen colorectal adenomas and their adjacent mucosa from 16 patients who underwent colonoscopy examination. In our study, histologically similar colorectal adenomas showed wide variability in chromosomal instability. Based on the obtained results, we further stratified patients into four distinct groups. The first group showed the gain of MALAT1 and TALAM1, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). The second group involved patients with numerous microdeletions. The third group consisted of patients with a disrupted karyotype. The fourth group of patients did not show any CIN in adenomas. Overall, we identified frequent losses in genes, such as TSC2, COL1A1, NOTCH1, MIR4673, and GNAS, and gene gain containing MALAT1 and TALAM1. Since long non-coding RNA MALAT1 is associated with cancer cell metastasis and migration, its gene amplification represents an important event for adenoma development. 相似文献

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are one of the most abundant and critical components of the tumor stroma. CAFs can impact many important steps of cancerogenesis and may also influence treatment resistance. Some of these effects need the direct contact of CAFs and cancer cells, while some involve paracrine signals. In this study, we investigated the ability of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) patient-derived CAFs to promote or inhibit the colony-forming ability of HNSCC cells. The effect of cisplatin on this promoting or inhibiting influence was also studied. The subsequent analysis focused on changes in the expression of genes associated with cancer progression. We found that cisplatin response in model HNSCC cancer cells was modified by coculture with CAFs, was CAF-specific, and different patient-derived CAFs had a different “sensitizing ratio”. Increased expression of VEGFA, PGE2S, COX2, EGFR, and NANOG in cancer cells was characteristic for the increase of resistance. On the other hand, CCL2 expression was associated with sensitizing effect. Significantly higher amounts of cisplatin were found in CAFs derived from patients who subsequently experienced a recurrence. In conclusion, our results showed that CAFs could promote and/or inhibit colony-forming capability and cisplatin resistance in HNSCC cells via paracrine effects and subsequent changes in gene expression of cancer-associated genes in cancer cells. 相似文献

Calcination of diatomite is an expensive process frequently resulting in products with unpredictable structure. Alternatively, calcination in swirling flow is an energy‐saving option. Computational fluid dynamics modeling of an experimental calcination process unit is presented. Experimental results and systematic collection of process data were used to define boundary condition for steady‐state and transient simulation runs. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows the complexity of the calcination process. The results can be used for further process optimization. 相似文献

The production of zeolite granules varies in the amounts of binder content and different drying/activation temperatures. Here, the influence of moisture content and cyclic moisture loading and unloading on the mechanical properties like the strength of three different types of zeolite granules has been studied by uniaxial compression tests. The force‐displacement curves and scanning electron microscopy pictures of the granule and fracture surfaces show that with increasing number of moistening‐drying cycles, a continuous decrease in the strength of granules take place due to non‐regenerative damage of the structure. 相似文献

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is known to intensify pain in various ways, so perturbing pertinent effects without negating its essential influences on neuronal functions could help the search for much-needed analgesics. Towards this goal, cultured neurons from neonatal rat trigeminal ganglia—a locus for craniofacial sensory nerves—were used to examine how NGF affects the Ca2+-dependent release of a pain mediator, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), that is triggered by activating a key signal transducer, transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) with capsaicin (CAP). Measurements utilised neurons fed with or deprived of NGF for 2 days. Acute re-introduction of NGF induced Ca2+-dependent CGRP exocytosis that was inhibited by botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) or a chimera of/E and/A (/EA), which truncated SNAP-25 (synaptosomal-associated protein with Mr = 25 k) at distinct sites. NGF additionally caused a Ca2+-independent enhancement of the neuropeptide release evoked by low concentrations (<100 nM) of CAP, but only marginally increased the peak response to ≥100 nM. Notably, BoNT/A inhibited CGRP exocytosis evoked by low but not high CAP concentrations, whereas/EA effectively reduced responses up to 1 µM CAP and inhibited to a greater extent its enhancement by NGF. In addition to establishing that sensitisation of sensory neurons to CAP by NGF is dependent on SNARE-mediated membrane fusion, insights were gleaned into the differential ability of two regions in the C-terminus of SNAP-25 (181–197 and 198–206) to support CAP-evoked Ca2+-dependent exocytosis at different intensities of stimulation. 相似文献

Different types of particle compounds like concrete particles can be considered as a model material of high strength agglomerates. It is necessary to investigate and understand fracture behaviour of these agglomerates in order to avoid breakage during storage, handling and transportation. The aim of the research is to examine the comminution behaviour of high strength agglomerates during oblique impact loadings.A two dimensional finite element analysis has been carried out to understand stress pattern distributions before crack initiation. Then a two dimensional discrete element method has been applied to study the fragmentation behaviour of the agglomerates. Concrete particles of B35 strength category have been chosen to represent the high strength agglomerates.Analysis is done with oblique impact loadings at different velocities from 7.7 to 180 m/s. The stressing conditions comprise low flow rate transportation and handling to high speed impacts during fall down in bunker, stock piles, ship loading or stressing in crushers and mill operations. Particle size distributions and new surface generation have also been evaluated in the paper.It is shown that at higher velocities, particle size distributions are identical to each other regardless of impact angle. This paper presents a novel training method for estimating the parameters of retina models, such as integrate-and-fire (IF) or Poisson based. The presented models are constructed using a set of linear and nonlinear filters, which are described by basis functions and Taylor polynomials, respectively. This approach allows for the identification of a set of features that can be used for reproducing retina responses. By using the Bayesian-Laplace feature selection algorithm herein proposed, an efficient model with a reduced set of parameters is achieved. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to remove unimportant features while still accurately reproducing retina responses. These results also show that the IF model is able to mimic the retina visual processing system using less parameters than the Poisson-based model. 相似文献

The discrete modelling and understanding of the particle dynamics in fluidized bed apparatuses, mixers, mills and others are
based on the knowledge about the physical properties of particles and their mechanical behaviour during slow, fast and repeated
stressing. In this paper model parameters (modulus of elasticity, stiffness, yield pressure, restitution coefficient and strength)
of spherical granules (γ-Al2O3, zeolites 4A and 13X, sodium benzoate) with different mechanical behaviour have been measured by single particle compression
and impact tests. Starting with the elastic compression behaviour of granules as described by Hertz theory, a new contact
model was developed to describe the force-displacement behaviour of elastic-plastic granules. The aim of this work is to understand
the energy absorption during compression (slow stressing velocity of 0.02 mm/s) and impact (the impact velocity of 0.5–4.5 m/s)
of granules. For all examined granules the estimated energy absorption during the impact is found to be far lower than that
during compression. Moreover, the measured restitution coefficient is independent of the impact velocity in the examined range
and independent of the load intensity by compression (i.e. maximum compressive load). In the case of repeated loading with
a constant load amplitude, the granules show cyclic hardening with increasing restitution coefficient up to a certain saturation
in the plastic deformation. A model was proposed to describe the increase of the contact stiffness with the number of cycles.
When the load amplitude is subsequently increased, further plastic deformation takes place and the restitution coefficient
