Construction of power-generating gas turbine units with the use of efficient thermal schemes

The design features of GTE-30 and GTE-50 power-generating gas turbines, the basic thermal circuit of a PGU-90 (150) combined-cycle plant, and a layout solution for a cogeneration station built around a gas-turbine unit are considered.

Rec10- and Rec12-independent recombination in meiosis of Schizosaccharomyces pombe

The Rec10 protein, a component of the linear elements forming along sister chromatids in meiotic prophase of Schizosaccharomyces pombe, plays an important role in the activation of Rec12 for double-strand break formation, and thus the initiation of recombination between homologous chromosomes. Recombination between homologous chromosomes was moderately reduced in homozygous crosses of the C-terminal truncation mutant rec10-155 and strongly in the full deletion allele rec10-175. Both alleles were also tested in two assays for intrachromosomal recombination (PS1 and VL1) and showed only slight reductions, while deletion of rec12 led to a 13-fold reduction. The even stronger reductions in rec10 rec12 double deletion crosses indicate partially redundant functions of Rec10 and Rec12 in the initiation of intrachromosomal recombination. A low level of double-strand breaks has been detected in rec10-175 meiosis at the mbs1 hotspot of recombination, and spore viability in the double mutant was also lower than in the single-deletion mutants. Low levels of apparent crossover and conversion between homologous chromosomes in the absence of Rec12 have been quantified using a newly developed assay. The results also indicate that the functions of Rec10 differ in several respects from those of its distant homologue Red1 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, including interactions with Hop1 and Mek1 for promotion of recombination between homologues at the expense of sister chromatid recombination.     

Influence of the substrate temperature and annealing on the 1.54-µm erbium photoluminescence of a-Si:H films obtained using a glow discharge

Effective Er photoluminescence is observed at room temperature in a-Si:H films doped with Er atoms through a gas phase using powdered Er(TMND)₃ as a source of Er ions. It is shown that the conditions for deposition of the films and their subsequent annealing influence the photoluminescence intensity and its temperature dependence. The observed behavior is attributed to restructuring of the amorphous silicon matrix within an Auger excitation mechanism involving defects. Fiz. Tekh. Poluprovodn. 33, 208–210 (February 1999)     

Features of methods of obtaining measurement information on the parameters of complex heat-dependent multielement two-terminal networks

The problem of measuring the electrical parameters of multielement two-terminal networks is considered. Methods of organizing the measurement operations and of designing new measuring instruments which enable information to be obtained on the electrical properties of objects are proposed. Compressibility of carbon woven fabrics with carbon nanotubes/nanofibres grown on the fibres

Growth of carbon nanotubes (CNT) or carbon nano-fibres (CNF) on carbon fibrous substrates is a way to increase the fracture toughness of fibre reinforced composites (FRC), with encouraging results reported in the recent years. If these nano-engineered FRC (nFRC) are destined to leave laboratories and enter industrial-scale production, a question of adapting the existing composite manufacturing methods will arise. The paper studies compressibility of woven carbon fibre performs (two types of fabrics) with CNT/CNF grown on the fibres using the CVD method. The results include pressure vs thickness and pressure vs fibre volume fraction diagrams for one and four layers of the fabric. Morphology of the nFRC is studied with SEM. It is shown that the pressure needed to achieve the target fibre volume fraction of the preform increases drastically (for example, from 0.05 MPa to more than 0.5 MPa for a fibre volume fraction of 52%) when CNT/CNF are grown on it. No change in nesting of the fabric plies is noticed. The poor compressibility can lower the achievable fibre volume fraction in composite for economical vacuum assisted light-RTM techniques and increase the pressure requirements in autoclave processing.     

Optimization of the decontamination of primary circuits of nuclear power installations

Two conflicting problems are solved in the course of chemical decontamination of the primary circuit of nuclear reactors: removing the maximal amount of radionuclides from the surfaces of the primary circuit equipment and minimizing the impact of decontaminating solutions on structural materials. A criterion for reliable determination of the completion of dissolution of surface corrosion deposits is suggested and substantiated. Since the criterion suggested is not related to the specific decontamination solutions, it can be applied to any decontamination procedure and chemical washing of the equipment in nuclear and thermal power industry.
