Twenty-one species in the Chenopodiaceae were analyzed for sterol composition. In ten of eleven species ofChenopodium, the major desmethylsterols were Δ7-sterols accompanied by lower proportions of Δ5-sterols. InC. fremontii this pattern was reversed. The sterol profiles of five species ofAtriplex were characterized by the coexistence of Δ7- and Δ5-sterols in ratios of 0.3∶1 to 0.4∶1. MaleAtriplex plants contained higher proportions of Δ5-sterols than femaleAtriplex plants. OneCeratoides and twoSalicornia species contained Δ5-sterols as their predominant sterols.  相似文献

This paper builds on a prior paper by this author, McGrane (1991). In that paper, ozone is used as the sole means of cooling tower water treatment. The paper discusses water conservation by increased cycles of concentration, greatly increased efficiency through extremely low biological populations, and corrosion data which is compared to ozonated and chemically treated towers.

New in this paper are the results from the combination of a low pressure reverse osmosis system with ozone treatment for cooling tower water. Scale formation has continued to plague cooling towers with high concentrations of calcium in the make-up water. The use of a mineral removal system in cases of extremely hard water has made ozone an attractive alternative to traditional chemicals in many areas.  相似文献

Although oils and oil distillates are usually dextrorotatory, some levorotations can be measured in lower boiling distillates. Fractional distillation of a Colombia crude oil of Eocene age showed that optical rotation is maximal at an average molecular weight of 464. The rotatory power of petroleum reflects the extent to which its composition has been transformed during geochemical maturation. Optical rotations thus can be correlated with the degree of maturity in much the same way as can such other compositional features as aromatic character or content of steroid-like substances, which are demonstrable in petroleums. The optical activity of petroleum is gradually degraded by maturational influences, and a decreasing trend in rotatory power is recognized in a comparison of oils produced from rocks of progressively greater geologic age. The optical rotation of dark crude oils can be measured in a polarimeter of suitable photometric sensitivity. The measurements extend geochemical application of oil polarimetry, which was restricted formerly to oil distillates and decolorized oils.  相似文献

Surface properties of a number of commercial thermoplastic polymer films were investigated before and after brief exposures to RF induced, low temperature gas plasmas. Water wettability and adhesion of vapor deposited aluminum to thin films (8–12 micron) of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polysulfone, polycarbonate, and polyvinylidene fluoride films were studied before and after treatments with oxygen, 96% CF4/4% O2, and helium plasmas. Treatment with oxygen plasmas showed the greatest change in water wettability for polyvinylidene fluoride and polypropylene films, while treatment with 96% CF4/4% O2 showed dramatic changes in wettability of polycarbonate, polysulfone, and polystyrene. Excellent adhesion of aluminium was found for polymers that had been previously exposed to gas plasmas.  相似文献

Performance data are presented for methane oxidation on alumina-supported Pd, Pt, and Rh catalysts under both fuel-rich and fuel-lean conditions. Catalyst activity was measured in a micro-scale isothermal reactor at temperatures between 300 and 800 °C. Non-isothermal (near adiabatic) temperature and reaction data were obtained in a full-length (non-differential) sub-scale reactor operating at high pressure (0.9 MPa) and constant inlet temperature, simulating actual reactor operation in catalytic combustion applications.

Under fuel-lean conditions, Pd catalyst was the most active, although deactivation occurred above 650 °C, with reactivation upon cooling. Rh catalyst also deactivated above 750 °C, but did not reactivate. Pt catalyst was active above 600 °C. Fuel-lean reaction products were CO2 and H2O for all three catalysts.

The same catalysts tested under fuel-rich conditions demonstrated much higher activity. In addition, a ‘lightoff’ temperature was found (between 450 and 600 °C), where a stepwise increase in reaction rate was observed. Following ‘lightoff’ partial oxidation products (CO, H2) appeared in the mixture, and their concentration increased with increasing temperature. All three catalysts exhibited this behavior.

High-pressure (0.9 MPa) sub-scale reactor and combustor data are shown, demonstrating the benefits of fuel-rich operation over the catalyst for ultra-low emissions combustion.  相似文献

The ability to discriminate prey chemicals from control substances and the presence of a poststrike elevation in tongue-flicking (PETF) rate are experimentally demonstrated in the lacertid lizard,Podarcis muralis, The tongue-flick attack score, a composite index of response strength, was significantly higher in response to integumental chemicals from cricket than to cologne or distilled water. The cricket chemicals additionally elicited a significantly greater rate of tongue-flicking and higher proportion of attacks by the lizards than did control stimuli. PETF combined with apparent searching movements strongly suggest the presence of strike-induced chemosensory searching (SICS). Experimental evidence indicates that both PETF and SICS occur in insectivorous representatives of three families of actively foraging autarchoglossan lizards, suggesting their widespread occurrence in such lizards. The adaptive roles of chemosensory behavior in the foraging behavior of P.Muralis are discussed. It is proposed that these lizards may form chemical search images and that PETF and SICS may have been present in the lacertilian ancestors of snakes.  相似文献

Blends of in situ polymerized PBT from cyclic oligomers (c-PBT) and PVB were prepared with varying compositions and compared with mechanical blends of conventional PBT and PVB. The materials were characterized by a variety of techniques including DSC, DMTA, DETA, FTIR, NMR and GPC. It was found that the in situ prepared blend of c-PBT/PVB has one glass transition temperature and shows evidence of miscibility. In contrast, the conventional blend of PBT/PVB shows incompatibility after blending. The cause of miscibility in the in situ prepared PBT/PVB blends is thought to be the formation of a graft copolymer. These results show that there are unique possibilities for in situ processing by combining polymerization of cyclic polyester oligomers with blending.  相似文献

During germination of seeds of the gymnosperm,Pinus pinea, radioactivity from [2-14C]-mevalonate proceeded principally through the anaerobic reactions leading to squalene in the first 24 hr in both the haploid endosperm and the diploid embryo, and only with succeeding time (3–9 days) in both cases was label transferred to sterols in oxygen-requiring steps. The rates of turnover must be real and independent in the two tissues, since no consequential interchange of labelled lipids occurred between the endosperm and the embryo. Similar delayed conversion of squalene to sterols has been observed previously during germination of seeds of the angiosperm,Pisum sativum.  相似文献

Phosphocholine (PC) zwitterionic surfactants, with different hydrocarbon chain lengths (C6C6PC to C9C9PC), were absorbed on the surface of silicon nitride near the isoelectric point (pH 6). Adsorption of the surfactants changed the lateral and normal surface forces, the rheology, and the consolidation behavior of the particles. The normal force between two silicon nitride surfaces as a function of separation and the lateral (friction) forces were measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM). These measurements indicated that surfactant adsorption reduced the magnitude of the long-range attractive van der Waals force and produced a repulsive short-range force. Although the adsorbed layers provided a barrier to particle contact, they could be ejected with a critical force that increased with the hydrocarbon chain length. The effect of an adsorbed layer on the viscosity and consolidation of slurries was also measured. The viscosity of all slurries decreased with increasing shear rate, indicative of attractive particle networks. The highest viscosity was observed for slurries formulated at the isoelectric point without added surfactant. Much lower viscosities were observed when the surfactant concentration was greater than the critical micelle concentration (cmc). A relative density of 0.46 was obtained via pressure filtration at 4 MPa without a surfactant, and between 0.46 to 0.59 (C6C6PC to C9C9PC, respectively) for surfactant concentrations greater than the cmc. Comparing force measurements with rheology and packing density provides a basis for discussing the role of interparticle forces in ceramic powder processing via colloidal routes.  相似文献
